First build, around €1700 budget

Hi! After being frustrated by my sad, sad laptop for way too long, I've decided to build a proper gaming rig. Hopefully you can help me out!

1. What is your budget? I have about 1700 available to cover parts/monitor/keyboard etc.
2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming, mostly.
2a. Games most likely played: skyrim with a bunch of mods, no man's sky, when it comes out. Generally RPG/open world type games.
3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes, but I'm budgeting for that separately.
4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No
5. Do you need a monitor? Yes.
5a. If yes, what size do you need. The space I have for it is 23 inches wide, 12.5 inches high and 11.5 inches deep. I'd appreciate any suggestions for what would work best!
5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? //
6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Mouse and keyboard.
7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No.
8. How can you pay? Pay pal (also debit card).
9. When are you purchasing? As soon as I can. Hopefully in the next week or so.
10. If you need help building it, where are you based? //

Happy enough at 1080p? You could likely hit 1440p if you wanted

Totalled at 1450 roughly. No monitor though, as I'm not great with them and people like different things from them.
You can free up €100 by dropping the SSD to this

You can also drop the GPU to an R9 390X or 290X saving a good bit, which would let you fit a mechanical keyboard and a nice mouse, and put more towards the monitor. I missed the kbm bit in your OP

Which of those two would you recommend? I have a terrible, ten year old keyboard that I can use for a while if I need to. :P

The 390X is €250 cheaper so I'd probably go for it here, link

It can play the likes of The Witcher 3 and GTAV almost maxed out 60fps at 1440p. The 980Ti is a stronger card but any frames above 60 are wasted anyways, so the 390X should do rightly for the next few years. The 980Ti would just last a little longer.

Frees up a lot of room for the monitor which you don't want to be cheaping out on anyways

You could also go for a fancier case...I know Digital Solitude is a practical man, but if I'm spending a grand on a PC I want it to look the part. But I guess the Nanoxia is kinda understated and simple. Ordered a NZXT H440 myself.

I love the Nanoxia looks The DS1 is €90 anyways so he can look at a Phantek, Lian Li or NXZT for example without affecting the budget in a huge way.

True true! I must say some of the Bit Fenix cases are pretty eye catching. Don't know about the build quality though, never seen one in person.

Why those tight space restrictions? Are you planning on putting inside a case or desk? Restricting airflow at the top or back of the case is really bad for your thermals.

I don't really know much about xeons, are they somewhere between i5 and i7 in features?

Have hyperthreading which an i5 doesn't have

Thanks everybody for all your help! I wasn't expecting so many replies so quickly.

I'm pretty happy with the build between the advice here, and the brains of a friend I'm picking. Could anyone recommend a monitor? It has to fit in the space I mentioned, so I'm unsure what size to go for.

(Also I'm a girl haha! It took me a while to figure out who this "he" fella was you were talking about!!)

Is 1440p going to be properly utilised when running what appears to be a 22" monitor?

Kinda sounds like building a home entertainment system to run 1080p blurays, on a 36 inch TV.

As in will you actually make any gains at that monitor size?

Actually I don't think they even make 1440p monitors that small. Most of them are 27" diagonal or bigger, way too big for that space.
