Yeah but Nani didn't even play for us last season, De Gea and Rafael haven't left yet and the other two would be backup at best. Stating something like 'worried about the size of the squad' doesn't make sense at the start of July.

We want to mount a title challenge and have Europe to contend with. Expecting better cup runs too. Basically we should be back to challenging on all fronts. I can't see us bringing in another 2 strikers, a couple of CB's and a GK

I'm not really sure the time is something here. I can see us buying some players but it would either have to be starters at the expense of numbers or numbers at the expense of quality.

The interest in Thomas Muller is long reported but Bayern Munich are determined he remains with them. Bastian Schweinsteiger is certainly a possibility if he wants the move and Bayern Munich have made it clear they wouldn't stand in his way, with Guardiola having excellent options for Bayern's midfield.
The latest, and perhaps most exciting, name to have been discussed is Mario Gotze, with SportBild claiming the two clubs have at least spoken about it. Gotze is just 23 years old with the genuine potential to be one of the world's very best players. He's already scored the winning goal in a World Cup final and won a bagful of trophies but there's a perception in Germany that Guardiola doesn't rate him as highly as many. The player's agent spoke to the press this week and said it would be nice if Gotze got more support from Bayern Munich and SportBild think that could be connected with Bayern Munich's alleged willingness to speak about sending him to Manchester United.

I wouldn't rate Valdes on the same level as Lloris. Hes a level below him at best. We have one of the top 3 keepers in the world. The other two aren't going to be sold by their clubs. So yes we would be moving down a level for Lloris but Valdes is lower again. Understand?

Why do we need 2 strikers when we're playing 1 up front and have Rooney?

I'll just repeat this from an earlier thread - Chelsea won the league using 17-18 players and Arsenal (despite all their injuries) used around the same. We have plenty of versatile players - sign Schneiderlin a striker, a CB, and we are sorted. Anything after that possibly a CM or so would be good too.

If Utd tried to go a season with a squad of 17-18 players we wouldn't be able to fulfill half our fixtures! :pac:

Rooney gets injured. We then need a striker who is good enough to start and someone who is good enough to come on and make a difference. I suppose I think Chicho will be going too so that means we need 2 and of good quality too.

I really don't agree that we have enough, especially when you look at the injury record of some of the players we will be relying upon.

Well we have no way of knowing, and I'll worry about the squad size close to the season start.

And I'd rather have quality than quantity anyways - how long have we seen average players replace other average players when coming on? What's the point in keeping around players for 2-5 games a season?

We only played 18 players last season in the league regularly with one or two games each for about 4 players. And that was with one of the worst injury hit seasons I've ever seen.

The way we will start the season is with around 22 players at least. Which is plenty.

While my last post was meant light heartedly, we really do need a bigger squad than last season.

Also I think you are missing a few players in your calculations for player appearances last season.

Van Gaal will also want to develop players already around the first team last season like McNair, Blackett, Peireira, Wilson as well as give a chance to one or two more. He will use them to fill out the squad for some of the extra games.

If RVP goes I can see a marquee name arriving later in the window.
