Considering it was such a flop in Germany it must have really exported well, or else they have an indulgent executive like The Americans.

The article I linked to says it wasn't a flop on RTL, just that it wasn't the great success they'd hoped for. It rated above average for the channel, with 15.7% of the audience share but was up against Germany's The Voice, which got 16%. It was very disappointing for RTL because they'd marketed the series hugely, but it's still profitable especially when it's selling so well outside of Germany. I hope the budget doesn't suffer too badly though. Period tv is very expensive to do well and in many ways, recent history shows are even harder to get right and find suitable props for.

Their big problem was that a lot of those who wanted to see it had already seen it by other means, took way too long to appear on German TV. Plus RTL are not exactly known for quality TV, so that would also not have helped.

Going to be called Deutschland 86 and carry on Martin's story 3 years later. Wunderbar!

Now to be known as Deutschland 86, the new episodes will pick up three years after Season 1 with Jonas Nay’s East German Agent Martin Rauch on the frontlines of the battle between the Ronald Reagan-led West and the Soviet Empire. With proxy states in Africa as the backdrop in what we now know were the final years of the Cold War, the Stasi agent ends up in the Johannesburg of the Apartheid-ruled South Africa, the Tripoli of Col. Gadhafi’s Libya, Paris, and both Berlins.

jesus 3 years between series, pretty long, still at least its something to look forward to, this was easily one of my new favorite shows lat year, its been pretty hard to find others that watch it though, i think after 86 the plan is to do Deutschland 89, id wonder if theyd do a 92 also to show martin after the reunification of the country,

Production on 86 commenced in recent weeks. No specific air date at this time. I'll wrap the story outline in spoiler tags.

Created by Anna Winger (Head Writer) and Jörg Winger, Deutschland86 picks up with Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay), his Aunt Lenora (Maria Schrader) and their colleagues at the East German foreign intelligence agency (HVA) three years after DEUTSCHLAND83.
Abandoned by Moscow and desperate for cash, the East German leadership pushes their secret operatives to experiment with global capitalism and save their sinking socialist ship. Long banished to Africa for his sins in 1983, Martin Rauch is now sent back into the field. Dark deals and a dangerous mission lead him to South Africa, Angola, Libya, Paris, West Berlin and finally back to East Berlin, where he must make an impossible decision. Our hero’s journey plays out to a soundtrack of international pop music – against a backdrop of Perestroika, proxy Cold Wars, the struggle to end Apartheid, a year of terror in Western Europe, and the creeping feeling back home in East Germany, that the end just might be near.

Deutschland 86 will air on the 19th October. Not sure if RTE will air it again as I believe Amazon have bought the rights to it.

If it's *ahem* out there from Oct will English subtitles be available without a TV version, or will we've to wait until it hits broadcast around here?

D83 was a great show though I think it is one of the rare shows that really, really needed 4-6 extra episodes. Sometimes events happened so fast that the emotional build up to really make sense of them wasn't there. Especially anything to do with Martin's romantic relationships. He swung from being desperate to get back to Annette in one episode, to seemingly genuinely in love with Linda in the next with absolutely nothing to justify the rapid change of heart. Many of the secondary characters seemed to change motivation for plot reasons without us getting to see any reasons why the character would do that. Just a few more episodes to let the characters breathe and for us to understand them better would have really elevated the show.

It was still excellent. The overall story was fantastic and some of the characters were fantastic, most especially Schweppenstette, and I loved Tobias and Alex. But compared to the better seasons of The Americans (which D'83 draws obvious comparisons with) where the characters (except Paige) are all excellently drawn and given room for the audience to understand why they do what, and feel the way, they do D'83 was lacking. I really hope D'86 corrects this. I understand the show was a hit in Germany and received mediocre reviews. So hopefully that has led to better timing in this series. Though even if it hasn't it will still probably be well worth watching.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Great acting, great characters, great story and all the tense set pieces were expertly directed. I loved that it moved at such a fast pace too. I'd rather have to join the dots if it sacrifices things getting boring.

I've never been able to watch anything subtitled but this and Dark gripped me this year. Maybe it's a German thing for me. Any recommendations on other German shows?

Can't wait for 86 now and, yeah, they better keep that theme tune!

Generation War, 3 part mini series, there's little comparison to be made with Deutschland 83 apart from the fact that it's German and it's also brilliant

Largely German only trailer (it's a DE link). Try Youtube subtitles and it helps a little. Still get a sense of the atmosphere, something to look forward to.

It had a quick skim through of the first episode on an unofficial site. It has only been released in Germany so there was no English subtitles.

It skips between South Africa and the DDR. Without subtitles I cant say what the story is about other than arms deals.

Releasing in the USA tomorrow so there should be a subtitled version in a few days if you don't want to wait until Feb.

    Where can one watch this?

Starting on Rte 2 Wednesday night at 10.50. I’ve just started rewatching Deutschland 83 on On Demand Ch4. Loved it first time, looking forward to D86

Quick synopsis from the RTE Guide :
    10.50pm RTÉ 2

The follow-up to German drama Deutschland 83 shifts forward a few years, but promises a return to the twists and turns that fans loved about the original.

Three years have passed, and Europe is changing. East Germany is on the brink of completely crumbling, as the political and social winds begin to change direction.

Martin Rauch was exiled for his actions years ago, and now finds himself wallowing in a self-imposed limbo.

However, that all changes when his Aunt Lenora returns, seeking his help in a scheme that should see them drum up some much-needed hard currency abroad.

Thus begins the pair’s whirlwind tour, as they do everything in their power to keep the idea of Communism alive.

I'm really looking forward to this, 83 was a great series

Similar in theme, on Netflix, and also very enjoyable so far, is the Polish series 1983 - in it, a terrorist attack in the titular year causes opposition to the Communists to collapse, meaning the Eastern bloc remains intact twenty years later. Two people who have been loyal to the system until now begin investigating the attack, and a resistance movement has just become active.

Thanks for the link. I've never even heard of this series....I wonder if RTE2 or Channel 4 will pick it up like D83.

enjoying the second series, my wife is German so is able to fill me in on the little cultural things like obsession with the show "The Love Boat" etc.

Gorgeous as ever - stylish, sharp, witty, just like 83 (but with a growing confidence). Acting and writing just as sublime. Interesting new location (South Africa) and political angle now.

One thing it lacked was the string of great songs on the soundtrack - not as big on music this time (so far).

Also, it doesn't make sense that a young man behind the iron curtain most of his life would have such exemplary English.

But otherwise perfection in my opinion. :)

Also, the women are gloriously bad-ass. No "Waaah I'm a victim of the patriarchy!" whining from those chicks!

Settled back into proceedings nicely, with style and humour. Key players are there and I do enjoy how unapologetically they live their world view. The archive footage from SA was pretty grim.

Presume we're all looking up The Love Boat now...

    Martin's fooked without his walkman.
