Hi All, I need to do a new build seeing as my last one is looking quite long in the tooth now (Core 2 Duo...)

    1. What is your budget? [Around €800-900, I was hoping, although it seems to be coming in above that at present)

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming mainly and a bit of music (but nothing too taxing)] (I 'd like to be able to play new games on high or ultra settings)

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [I think so, seeing as I am still on Vista]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [I could use some parts but I was trying not to. I currently have a Core 2 Due 6700 with some kind of Asus MB, 4GB Ram, no idea of brand without opening the PC, GTX460, Soundblaster Xfi, 500GB HD, Decent large Antec case with a relatively recent (less than 5 years) power supply, cant' remember the wattage, but I think it is 400-450) Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.] (If possible state brand and model of the parts to ensure compatibility)

    5. Do you need a monitor? [No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/] [No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.] None of these required

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Not really bothered]

    8. How can you pay? Any

    9. When are you purchasing? [Soon]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [Shouldn't need help]

I was basing my choices on the PCGamer Rig as a complete new build but would like your opinion on best prices, and should I change out certain things? Also, Should I just re-use some of my current parts? I assum we are talking just Case, Power Supply, Sound card?
I've only checked Amazon so far, but prices here are Sterling and I have no idea what kind of postage they would charge on all this, so anyone with experience, please let me know. I might have a look at Hardwareversand now also.

    I5 4690 £178
    Asus Z97P D3 £62
    Crucial Ballistix Sport 16B (8x2) £82
    Seagate Barracuda 2TB £57
    Sandisk 128GB SDSS DP 128G G25 £40
Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo Heatsink £25
    Corsair CXM 500W £52
    Corsair Carbide 200R Case £54
    GTX970 G1 Gaming £280
All comes to £829, which at today's rate is €1,167, so a bit more than I wanted to pay.
(Forgot about Windows!, maybe I'll stay on Vista!)
Anyway, I'd really appreciate your thoughts and advice.

(Edit-I just did a quick check on Hardwareversand (without the other discount form the other website I have seen mentioned here before and the price comes to €1078. I also checked and if I use my own case and power supply, and go for a GTX 960 Gaming 4GB, that would save me €245, bringing the budget down to a reasonable €833!)
    Thank you!

    Drop CPU to i5 4460
    H97 board €80-90
    8gb RAM is loads
Should be able to carry old hard drives no? Or are they IDE
    Don't need a new heatsink
    Everything else is fine.

If buying from Amazon use skinflint.co.UK, for hardwareversand use Geizhals.de to knock a few euro off.

Total should be roughly €920 delivered from HWVS

    970 €330
    H97 €90
    500w PSU €60

The Windows key, GPU and PSU are absolutely riding you, everything is fine.

Check Amazon.de for those two components, windows key from Reddit

    You'll only need a 500w psu

Thanks mate. I'll have another look over the weekend before I push the button!

The CPU, MB and RAM bundle is more expensive than before?

    4690k €250
    8gb RAM €50
    Board €80
It's about €50 more than buying then independently.

960 isn't a great card either, its good enough for High settings with most current games.

I'd drop the CPU to the 4460 as above, buy the bundled stuff separate and you should have enough to get a GTX 970 and still save a little.

Weaker CPU with strong card is better than a strong CPU with a weak card.

  • Registered Users Posts: 583 ✭✭✭Is1ldur

Ta for that, decided to keep the 4690 but saved a little by splitting the bundle up and also upped the card. All from Dabs at the moment. Should I be looking elsewhere? Seems just handy if the saving is not major to keep everything in one place.

    Yes, it is Digital.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

Sorry I had missed that in the first paragraph :D It's fairly over priced, I'd have a look at Amazon or mind factory, you should be able to bring that under €1000, or very close to it

  • Registered Users Posts: 583 ✭✭✭Is1ldur

I saw mind factory. Are they okay? I had never heard of the name before.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

No idea, they're cheap as chips, been recommending them here, I think only one or two people have bought from them though, no complaints

  • Registered Users Posts: 583 ✭✭✭Is1ldur

Another mail, still not purchased yet. This is from MindFactory. Do you have to do either Bank Transfer or PayPal? It's all in bloody German! 1018, although I am not sure if this includes VAT.....

    The €1018 does include VAT.

It also includes a second delivery charge of €30 for the case, so try to buy the case from Amazon or somewhere as that's basically costing you €87 inc. delivery from mindfactory (they have a separate warehouse for large items hence the added delivery charge).

There's no point getting a Z97 unless you get a 'k' version (overclockable) of the CPU so I'd drop to a H97 and plough the saved money into other upgrades.

    obFhHmu.png
    + delivery = 946.27

The same case from Amazon is €68.88 + €3.95 for Parcel Motel = €72.83

...making the total amount €1019.1. An extra euro above your projected spend but you've got a better PSU, an SSD that's twice as large and IMO a better, more future-proof GPU.
