He hasn't been at much this year and when he was most prominent, at the Criterium, he was in support of Froome and didn't have too many great days. He wasn't even supposed to be at the Tour.

Nibali best of the GC lads...+11

Not a great tt by contador...

actually, not that bad looking vs froome...thought froome had 20-30 seconds on him

Quintana going early proved to be a masterstroke.

Very poor from Quintana...very strong from Pinot

Not poor by Quintana at all
He is not a reknowned TTer so he did very well

The wind must have changed massively which explains it as well as others not doing so well...as said above, him going early was a masterstroke.

    Nibali 0:00
    Froome +7 secs
    Contador +15 secs
    Quintana +18 secs

I would include Pinot in the assessment of GC guys ...real prospect imo

I thought Froome would do better tbh . He is a top TTer usually
also I thought Contador looked abit tired

Pinot I think could podium as long as one of the top 4 DNF... Contador with his usual uncomfortable on the saddle TT style looked very bad today...looks like a guy who didn't train for the TT. Looking back on his ride, he kicked into his rhythm a lot later and more casually than Nibali who was in the zone from the get go.

First week should be very eventful and entertaining.

I would agree with this point re.Pinot.

Interesting first day- bit early to speak of a 'changing of the guard' but a new TT powerhouse has arrived
Maybe Pinot will follow suit on GC? Now that would be exciting
I'm en-route to Mur-de-Bretagne via the northern pave at this very moment... :)

I just thought Pinot's climb was immense in Switzerland

And I think at least one of the big 4 will not finish or lose alot of time

    There is a high probability

So Talansky only 2 seconds faster than Dan Martin. And that is usually why he is GT guy.
Dan for me is better climber.
Should be interesting where they will be this time next week

Just catching back up with cycling to be honest so just a few questions and uninformed opinion from me.

How is Chris Boardman riding or is this some charity/ publicity stunt?
Has Cancellation been out on course yet?

In terms of Sam Bennett he's done well not to be pushing it coupled with extreme nerves like so many first timers in the Tour and over cook it on a tough corner.

Bennett was bound to be nervous and even if he came last it doesn't matter as not going fro GC or TT win

    Best save himself for tomorrow

So I'm reading that today's TT was the fastest ever in Tour history.

The previous fastest average speed I think goes back to Greg LeMond in 1989, surely with significantly worse or less advanced bikes and 10kms longer, & pretty certainly unaided by rocket fuel like EPO. The aerobars used by Lemond but not Fignon are seen as pretty crucial in helping him beat Fignon overall by 8 seconds.

A bit disappointed that a Dutchie didn't get the yellow jersey today, but no real surprise.

    Jammer joh. :p

Boardman held the record from the 7k prologue in 1994

Though I think they're differentiating between prologue distances and TTs, whatever the cutoff point is between them.

I loved the way Kelly kept calling it a prologue. 1st stage Sean! Not a prologue!!

I thought the worst was Kirby calling Nico Roche "Raw-sche"

I can't remember who they were talking about, it was in the last half hour anyway, and Kelly called one of the peleton 'very performant'. I had to scratch my head for a minute but I reckon he meant to say 'consistent performer' & just jumbled the two.

It's one of the words that Kelly has appropriated from french, like bonification, or classement. In french it would be perfectly normal to say a rider is trés performant.

The wind must have changed massively
I think this is the reason Martin and Cancellara weren't 1 & 2. They lost a lot of time in the second half of the TT and that was the part into the wind. The early starters had the advantage.

It's amazing how many names and even simple word Kelly mispronounces, but it's one of the most endearing things about his co commentary. AFAIK he speaks French and Flemish fluently as well as decent Spainish and Italian. He's even been known to speak English to a decent level :).
