UPC Ireland has bought out TV3 for €80 million, according to Irish Times newsflash.

Infrastructure company buys content company. Wasn't owning both delivery and content the old way of doing things?

REad about it here if your subscription works.

Intriguing development, wasn't there talk about UPC becoming part of Virgin at some point?

TV3 is the number one channel in Ireland after public broadcaster RTÉ1

    :pac:
TV3 holds a unique place in the heart of Irish viewers

UPC's parent company (Liberty Global) bought Virgin Media in Britain in 2013 - there have been reports that UPC Ireland would adopt the Virgin brand in the near future, but I'd not be surprised if Branson put some some limitations on how they can use the name when he sold up.

Yeah he gets a big fat cheque. I assume that they will rebrand once the launch their mvno product later this year.

While I wouldn't be all that surprised if they did rebrand here, most businesses Virgin sells tend to drop the branding after a certain amount of time.

I'm also not sure how a rebrand would fit with their decade or so of work to build up a pan-European presence under the 'UPC' name - which has made it easier for them to transfer hardware and services (like Horizon) from one country to another.

There was a very good article in the ST about the buy - after reading it makes complete scene as there are some great synergies between the two groups.

eg - Liberty (parent of UPC) have a licensing company selling to its other TV stations worldwide - seemingly Red Rock selling well through them - also UPC have great studios with a deal with Sony - so its a cost 'exploring*' exercise

Indeed similar sinergies TV3 had with Canwest and ITV
