Two amateurs in the Top 5 at the moment. SCHNIEDERJANS, Oliver (a) currently in a tie for 5th! Hard to think about it but Dunne might not get a Silver Medal yet.

Ashley Chesters off to a good start too, could see him moving up a lot!

Dustin continues off where he finished yesterday... just drove into a gorse bush on the 2nd and is currently taking an unplayable. (He did birdie the 1st though)

Typical score seems to be 69/68 at the moment. Andy Sullivan is -4 after 4 holes already.

Commentators curse - double bogey 7 on 5th for sullivan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭byronbay2

DJ birdies the first to go -8. Could he possibly still have a say in this??

Sullivan double-bogeyed 5 after his 4 straight birdies - back to -7 now.

Have a big feeling that dustin Johnson will go very low this afternoon.

Dustin has about a 30ft putt to save par on the 2nd after taking an unplayable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,378 ✭✭✭HighLine

It was actually only about 20ft... he comes up short. Bogey.

If the wind blows later, you could see a winner in the clubhouse from very early on.

Yesterday was so anti-climatic with the Monday finish. There I was all confused on the couch with a HUGE teapot filled to the brim watching the back 9 thinking, hoping that it was really the back 9. For someone to sneak under the radar and win this it would put the tin hat on it. I think after the delays etc we all really deserve a 4 man play off!

Matsuyama off with a birdie. He's another guy to look out for, especially if he can repeat his form in round 2

I can't comment on the amateur ranking system but just looking at Paul Dunne it says he was voted Golfer of the year last year in C-USA (14 University Conferance in America, South of USA) and came 5th in the NCAA Division 1 tournament (top college event in USA, won by the likes of Woods, Donald, Mickelson etc when they were in college). Also he could have opted to go pro before this even but wants to play in the Walker Cup.

Sounds like to me he is a very talented player with potential, I can't go by amatuer rankings because I have no idea what way they work, is there a seperate points for college tour to amatuer tour, how many events they play etc. Not to mention considering the greystones golf course is a links course by the sea maybe St.Andrews suits him.

I don't understand why rather than being happy that an amateur is doing so well you are taking a negative view and complaining that the only reason he must be doing well is because the rest aren't at a good quality. You play the course.

Considering the best ever finish by a player in the open at St.Andrews was -19 by Woods and Dunne is currently on -12 it would suggest he's playing the course extremely well rather than the "overall standard is low".

Whooo a minute. Greystones is absolutely not a links course. It is quite definitely parkland.

Another bogey for DJ on 3.

Indeed. About as far from being a links as you can get.

I must be informed badly so. I've never played it personally but talked about it with someone I know who said he played it and that it was a links course. He must be wrong so. Apologies

Another bogey for DJ on 3.

seems like another missed major, unless he can really rally..

Mickelson just sinks a bomb to get to -10

Definately gone now. 6 shots back, and a LOT of players between him and the top.

That could be phil to be honest

if phil could finish with 2 birdies and the wind gets up you never know he might have a slim chance at winning this

And the rain starts to fall as the winds get up... will be an exciting few hours coming up!

You'd think they'd have it on the red button if they can't/won't clear BBC 1 or 2

Mickelson takes a treble on 17

The text updates on the guardian were giving quite a bit of time to people airing their complaints about BBC coverage!!

Guess it's radio coverage for the next 2 hours :(

    What a disaster from phil

Have ESPN on watching the golf on the PC and the TV on in the background waiting for BBCHD coverage, good episode of Rockford Files in fairness, Jim in a good shootout at the minute...

If you have UPC, you can use their Horizon app or web link to view BBC1. It's better quality than most other streams.

Scott has a lot of unfinished business with this championship. Will surely give it a real rattle today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,910 ✭✭✭✭whatawaster

Find it hard to look beyond Spieth today. I think he will keep his cool, whereas I'd have my doubts about Day, Dunne and Oosthuizen.

If the wind gets up though, perhaps an earlier starter could come through the field.

  • Registered Users Posts: 713 ✭✭✭loadwire

Dustin +3 for his round today. Bit different from a lot of his other major misses in that there hasn't been a memorable clanger but just a gradual fade from view, probably more worrying from his point of view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Superb performance by the amateurs. Major break by Scott that he bounced over the burn on the first

  • Registered Users Posts: 123 ✭✭TLOA72

Will only get to see paul tee off first then go to work . Grrr. Impossible to avoid results as radio is hard wired into work and always on. Dunne,Harrington then speith in preference of winning.

    Get in Sergio.

This is going to be an epic day of golf.

Now all aboard the paddy train.

Padraig looks like he is going to pick up from yesterday where all he thought about were birdies. His putting stroke yesterday was sublime. His opening putt will tell a lot.
