Sadly its the end for Irish TV.

Shame for all the people working there. Especially so close to Christmas.

So it's now hairdressers and restaurants.....

I still can't get my head around how there are so many of both in such a small town

I would not call Castlebar a small town. Not even close.

For the majority of the year it feels like a ghost town after 19.00, you hardly see anyone on the streets, no point in having all these new restaurants if the clientele is not there to make use of them.

Maybe the clientele were not there because there was nowhere to go?
Ghost town is wide of the mark

Ghost town is quite apt, you encounter very few if any people around the center of town after 7 on a weekday, even some Friday nights I have walked down main street after 9 and it has been deserted, living in the centre of town I notice it more, there is not many cars around either.

    What's in it? 10k?

    It's a small town.

As I have said on here before, I grew up in an area of with 320k people in a city with millions. That area did not have as many hairdressers as Castlebar does.

Clearly there is a business case for it otherwise they wouldn't be there but as I said, can't get my head around it. Unless someone can fill in the blanks for me.

The place is deserted at night during the week. The same can be said of Westport as well though.

The night life is Castlebar at the weekend has become non existent. Most head to Westport. It's a shame, I always preferred Castlebar for a night out.

i would tend to agree, Saturday night in westport is hopping ,mostly with Castlebar people. however both Castlebar and westport are quite during the week,in westport, the likes of O malleys and henehans are often closed all day. I dont bother with Cox's late bar in Castlebar anymore, a good late pint in your local is just a good ;) The restaurant and more so takeaway trade in Castlebar is doing well, i think Justeat(on line delivery) has a lot to do with some of their success.Paramount House the latest chinese opened the last day run by the previous owners of the old Silver House. all in all things have picked up about Castlebar in the last year. Dire need of a new late bar though or indeed nightclub,McCartys pub now delayed opening to March/April. those aged between 18-35 have very little to bother going out for hence 450 people going to westport alone on a recent saturday night and thats a lot of people gone out of town.

Is part of the probably that people between 20-30 tend to stay in a drink?
Its crap for sure, used to be a massive town for socialising, now its depressing and Coxs, well isn't "great"!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,146 ✭✭✭✭Oscar Bravo

Some certainly do drink in houses and i dont blame them, we often have a few cans in a house and then back to westport, do a pub or 2 and then into the Castlecourt, its a change and a tenner return and free into the night club is a fairly good offer. Im sure you could name the heads that go into Cox's at this stage :)

I'd say it's closer to 15-20k if you accurately take into account those in rural areas who frequent the town. Not to mention the amount of college students living elsewhere who return home at weekends, holidays etc. There is a problem with the town closing down after 7pm though. And that's due mostly to the fact that not enough 20-30 year olds live in rural areas to sustain a night life. Hard to change that.

If they stay open then obviously the demand is there. Nothing wrong with competition, can't see why it bothers you so much.

How did that come across as it bothering me, I was just pointing out that it is a waste to have these establishments if they are not being made use of.

What exactly is being wasted? Some other business cannot now open? There are loads of hairdressers and restaurants because the demand is there. Hairdressers especially do a huge trade, always have.

I never mentioned hairdressers, just restaurants, hairdressers provide a service and are a necessity and are always needed that's why they do a big trade, restaurants on the other hand are not a necessity but add vibrancy to a town.

Not sure how that sentence has been taken out of context twice now.

If new ones are opening then the clientele is there, or at least the owners believe it is. This thread is fierce negative about businesses opening for some reason.

I suppose only time will tell, but I wish them well and hope they get good business, it is good to see the 3 empty premises that were former restaurants filled as well and that McCarthys had a quick turnaround, plus the two new premises on Thomas street and Linenhall street.

They've just opened how do you know they won't be used? Are these entrepreneurs not allowed try & enter the market? If the existing businesses weren't being used they wouldn't be open.

    A lot more than 10k

So call it 20k and that's really pushing credibility.

    It's still a small town.

I wish all the new businesses the very best of luck, the restaurant business is a rough game.

I still don't understand how there are so many hairdressers for the population of the town and surrounding area. I guess I'm just interested to know how they all seem to be surviving and continuing to trade. I don't think there is another town in the country like it for hairdressers.

How is 20k pushing credibility? Castlebar is the county town and commercial centre of Mayo and located fairly centrally too. The population of the urban area is well over 10k, and the amount of people from surrounding areas for which the town is their work/shopping/socialising location is quite substantial, hence the number of hairdressers, supermarkets and restaurants. By Irish standards, Castlebar is a big town.
