I doubt it. The food in Coxs has been substandard for a long time now.

The following is happening in Castlebar:

New Polish restaurant Polonia Restaurant in Thomas Street, great value food.
Sam Adams has been purchased by an Achill man.
McCarthy's will be open by St Patrick's Day.
ComfiHome Furniture is a new shop opening opposite Heiton Buckley in moneen industry estate.

Castlebar is surely on the way up.

Independant movie house as in an arthouse cinema? That's great news if so.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,455 ✭✭✭maudgonner

It would be kind of hilarious if it reopens as an arthouse cinema, seeing how Galway has spent millions on the new cinema and it still isn't anywhere near completion.

Regardless, it's great news. I'll definitely be paying a visit when it reopens.

Leo Doherty Menswear moving back into their original premise soon as well. Looking forward to seeing McCarthy's, it's supposed to be quality inside.

Great to see all these things but it's going to take something bigger to have a real impact.

Must pop over and see it when it opens. Never got over to the original one.

I wonder if it's no aligned to a chain will that affect the movies it can get. Never heard of a cinema with a wine licence either.

Great to hear of the re-opening of that cinema in Westport.

As already mentioned the Hobans have a long and honourable record in entertainment in Westport. The late Michael Hoban was an innovative business-man, well before his time. He brought Joe Loss and other big names to the Ideal in the forties and since.

He was one of the first outside Dublin to import Volkswagen "Beetles"

The Hobans invested heavily in fitting out the present building. The death of their brother Haulie was one of the reasons for the 2013 closure.

We wish them every success on the reopening.

Knowing this family I very much doubt that it will be an exclusive artsy cinema or such. Mayo people are better rooted and more sensible

It would be brilliant if they offered a subscriber card - like the Cineworld card.

I'd be very tempted by that and it would be a great way to build up loyalty.

Castlebar has been provisionally given hub status in the new National Planning Framework, the same as it had in the previous National Spatial Strategy along with Ballina.

The publication is just a draft at the moment, but a government handout for it was provided to various groups on Thursday, it is not online though.

Castlebar Boxing Club getting a new home in Lough Lannagh. The base will become a centre of excellence for the region. Great to see and that area is becoming a nice little hub for sports / outdoor activities. Well positioned for the GMIT who should be expanding on their offerings in that area to create their niche.

Any word where exactly it will be? Or is it in along with the Swimming Pool?
