Yeah I was wrong on that, was mixing it up with World Gin Day which is going around on Facebook now. Don't know where all these gin drinkers come from but then again I'm almost certainly not the target demographic and whatever brings business to the town is most welcome.

Sounds like they didn't anticipate so much interest in the event based on that Xenji. Good sign that it ran out but also shows a lack of ambition by the publicans. A specialised gin event and they run out on the first night by not getting enough in? That's typical Castlebar/Mayo. :D

The Gin Trail was and is meant to be on going. The one bottle thing is complete nonsense

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,197 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

It's a permanent fixture and a good example of how a bit of marketing can create a bit of a buzz. The main aim from what I gather is to promote nightlife / Castlebar as a town that specialises in Gin / riding the wave in the explosion in popularity of Gin. There's no trail as such, you'd be doing well to have a Gin in each pub if so.

The whole rise in popularity in Gin is nuts and probably another example of great marketing in itself. Lots of small craft Whiskey breweries started cropping up in recent years, it generally takes 3-4 years before you can sell a bottle of Whiskey where Gin can be produced immediately. A lot of the breweries started producing it to pay the bills until the Whiskey could be sold... they might just forget about the Whiskey if the Gin trend continues.

You can see on the Gin Trails Facebook page they were apologising as early as Friday night that some bars had ran out of what was advertised, most bars now have a solid selection though even before the idea of a trail so they were offering other recipes instead.

The Yew Tree was open last night when I passed by. Didn't get a chance to go in though.

Has anyone been down to The Lounge since it reopened 2 weekends ago ? I see it relaunched with a Deep House & Electro night ! What were they thinking ? They pretty much ruled out getting the people who actually spend money in nightclubs with that music policy. That will just attract a very young crowd, who load up at home first, then arrive at the clubs boozed up & no money to spend. The ones that will probably piss off back over to Westport if they don't like the Dj, or don't like the bouncers or don't like the look of the place.
Terrible idea ! whoever gave them that advice. Heard it was packed for the opening night ! (everyone going in for a gawk) but half empty last Saturday night. Is this true ? Were you there ? I hope this is not true on only week 2 of opening.

I was there the last two Saturdays, it took until 1, when the regular pubs closed up, to get going but it was busy after that.

Nothing of note from what I've heard. It's great that it's back but it would have been so much better if someone, with a bit of money and fresh ideas, would have been able to buy the place and bring something new to the town.

How did the deep house & electro go down with the crowd ?

It's unfortunate that it didn't get busy until 1am, dunno how clubs and late bars in this country are supposed to make money with a 1.5 hour window to do it with all the overheads they have.No wonder they're shutting down all the time.

Judging by the Failte and Lounge "completions", it looks like they're just "re-openings". Good to have them back but I think a significant change was needed. Maybe Mantra will see a bit of investment put into it. It would be great to have something for 18-30's to keep them in town at the weekend. The old offering wasn't doing that, a freshening up may only give a short term boost would be my fear.

If it's not significantly revamped and invested in, they may forget about it right now. Look at the job they did in Westport going from C2 to The Castle. It's what 1.5 years old now and are still enjoying a full house with visitors and people from all over the country filling it every weekend.

The Castlecourt actually did some additional work to the nightclub in the last few months.

You're right ! And by doing so, they can now fit even more people in ! That's potentially a few more busloads extra to leave Castle bar over the summer unless the Mc Hughs can do something inovative to stop that.

People where leaving in bus loads well before the lounge closed its doors.
I don't think any major investment is going to stop them going back to Westport with what they have to offer be it pubs clubs or food.

Nope and an article in the Connacht telegraph says it was brought up at the county council meeting and the issue is at a delicate stage in proceedings according to mayo Co Co.

They did a chunk of interviews. Offerd my mate a job, told him they'd be in contact. I think 3 months later they rang, apologised, said it was still WIP....
    Time will tell

Chopped (the salad bar outlets) is going into Casey's filling station beside McDonalds. It will be their own staff and they are just renting space I believe.

It looks like the SDZ status for Knock will take a minimum of two years to be implemented, that is if everything goes smoothly and there is no hold ups, it also needs final approval by An Bord Plean?la.

Ah come on ! We gotta be positive ! I think Castlebar has turned a corner and is on the rebound. New restaurants and bars opening, one town centre hotel reopened, hopefully the other one will get back to where it used to be and start bringing in the big names again, the old Upper Crust development about to start.A rising tide lifts all boats ! I think by Christmas 2018 (and hopefully sooner), we'll be seeing those very buses bringing people into town rather than away from it.
The business and hospitality community need to seriously gel together and invest in marketing Destination Castlebar. How often do you hear destination Westport promoted on national radio.

    Thats the Claremorris townhall ?

Went to see a few plays there, tommy marren and gerry glennon I forget the name but it was very enjoyable, and another a wake in the west had people in tears and nearly getting sick from the laughing.
Well worth a see if its on near you.

The attraction of Westport isn't simply the offering of pubs, clubs or food so much as the offering of people. A night out in Westport means you can regularly meet different people from all over Ireland and the world. That is something Castlebar simply cannot compete with, no matter how fabulous its food and drink is.

Dunno if this is true but I heard that the ones that were in the TF were taken out by the company that supplied them as they weren't paid for !
