New DPD couriers depot in Castlebar to create 25 jobs; according to the Connaught

I wonder how that will affect the depot they already have in Straide, they run on a franchise based system as far as I know.

Fairly nice inside, there's more room than you would think looking in from the street. Food and service was good anytime I was there. However, I did hear quite a few people say that the service could be hit or miss when busy.

Shame to see it go. They've listed "owner retiring" as reason on the daft advert for the lease.

I've just recently moved back to Castlebar after spending a year away. Anyway, recently, I was down at Harvey Norman's and was wondering what's happening with the old APC site as there is a lot of work going on with it. At the moment it looks like it's been completely refurbished. Just curious what's the story?

I see. I think the majority of us seen this coming. I was very vocal in my opinions in how stupid of an idea it was and how the council would need to be held accountable if and when it didn't happen.

I wonder what the market value of the building is now, seeing as the council have the first opportunity to repurchase the building at market rate....

Whatever has happened here, it is essential that the building now be fully controlled and owned by either MCC or IDA

Yes, let MCC have it back, they made such a good call on the opensparkz scam.

It would have been better for the town If MCC had just handed the keys to the Casey's and let them re open what was there before.

Anyone know what's happening with Tim Hastings garage in Westport? I see virtually all the stock has been removed and VW signage has been taken down. Wonder will it be a garage or has someone bought for something else ?

Work has begun on the mall for the opening of the skating rink on the 24th, they need 25,000 people to avail of the facility if it is to come back next year according to Castlebar Chamber of Commerce president Wilson Bird.

Hope it gets the support, will have the family down. It would be a major attraction for the town if it became a permanent fixture at Christmas.

The owner of the ice rink company itself wasn't as ambitious / didn't want to be tying it down to a number for Year 1. He said it would be amazing to hit 25,000 but also noted that if it was to break even, he would be encouraged to commit long term. Not sure what his B-E number is though. He also said the The Mall was the best location they had seen. The space could and should be used more imo.

They mentioned at the launch that hotels in Westport were looking to partner up with / support the venture etc. Great to see.

Yeah I was surprised that the Chamber Of Commerce came out with such a definitive statement in the Connaught last month.

    http://www.con-telegraph.ie/news/roundup/articles/2017/10/26/4147770-castlebars-christmas-ice-rink-has-fantastic-potential/

You can see already the grass has started cut up around were the work has commenced after the heavy rain in the last 24 hours, it will be interesting to see what the area looks like come January as this will be a first for the Mall.

Looking forward to getting the embarrassment out of the way, must go at a quiet time.

I'd say the 25000 is achievable this year, however next year may not be as good as the novelty has worn off and people like myself will submit to looking foolish only once

That must be empty for at least 10 years. Not thrilled about another discount store but better than it empty.

Ya, how many have we got now. Read something about the "state" of a town when there is a big influx of discount and charity shops, but can't remember the exact article

6 within a minute of each other now and another 3 scattered about, must be the same number of charity shops if not more, better than units being empty but more of a band aid solution.

Cafes, hairdressers and discount stores, all castlebar needs now is one of them casino places with the slot machines to complete the circle.

As other have said in the past, this happened in UK towns too, not a good sign.

Dont know what you have against cafe's? Should we all be eating venison steak for lunch every day? They are thriving businesses for the most part and add to a towns character.
Hairdressers either. They are providing a service driven by demand. Large sections of the population having hair is not a traditional indicator of decline as far as I know.
