Appetite Cafe Castlebar have been sold to new owners, it is a very unique offering.

I always felt it would make a fantastic franchise, maybe that could be the case.

Hopefully so, a fantastic place to eat and always a warm welcome in there.

Good to see work has started on the bookshop going into the former Wynnes Newsagent building.
The refurbishment and retention of some of the features from the original facade will be a great addition to the town's heritage.

Anyone know the latest on the proposed development's either end of the street, The former Lavelles building and building beside Tweed centre?? read in the Connaught about levies holding them up, but it would be a shame if they fell through because if this.

Dont know what you have against cafe's? Should we all be eating venison steak for lunch every day? They are thriving businesses for the most part and add to a towns character.
Hairdressers either. They are providing a service driven by demand. Large sections of the population having hair is not a traditional indicator of decline as far as I know.

Nothing against either either industry / business, but when it is all a town center has to offer I think you are asking for trouble. 22 hairdressers in Castlebar at the last count? As I have said before, I know areas in London that would not have that many. Can't get my head around it.

Somone has bought it. Not sure it is common knowledge yet so i wont say any names. An established motor trader will reioen a dealership there soon

I think everyone knows at this stage who bought. Is it defiantly going be a car dealership though??

Work has begun on the mall for the opening of the skating rink on the 24th, they need 25,000 people to avail of the facility if it is to come back next year according to Castlebar Chamber of Commerce president Wilson Bird.

That appears to be a pretty big target.

Herself was making a booking and said that the weekend slots were filling up fast. Would be interesting to see where they're at at the end of the early bird offer. We've 5 coming from Sligo that are dying to give it a go.

Cafes, hairdressers and discount stores, all castlebar needs now is one of them casino places with the slot machines to complete the circle.

As other have said in the past, this happened in UK towns too, not a good sign.

Don't take a walk down Rush St.

There has been one of those slot machine places there for years, between Bar One and Flynns.

It's possible, but I think Westport days of having a car dealership maybe over. I would say Castlebar would be the preferred location. I think he may 'sit' on it for a while and see what comes along......

I'd love to see a Supermacs open in Westport. I know there is a small one way out on the Castlebar Road, but it's too far out and no proper seating.
The old Dunnes stores site has been empty for a while, any plans for something to go in there?

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending upon how you look at it, those type of developments will never take place in Mayo.

The population of the towns just isn't there to support them, in the eyes of such a business. There is a reason there is no starbucks in Castlebar for example (although I think it might do well) they look for a certain number (20k iirc) before they even entertain a franchise.

Having said that, the McDonald's in Castlebar is the most consistently busy McDonald's I have ever come across and thats comparing it to outlets I have been in or around all over the world, it does an unbelievable trade at all times of the day.

I would imagine a Supermacs would do very well in Westport. The cafe's and restaurants are usually fairly busy, so I'd imagine a casual, convenient fast food establishment would do well too, especially with the busy tourist season and the nightlife Westport has. There is no fast food place in Westport with ample seating, just take away service really. There are Supermac's in smaller towns like Ballindine, Ballinrobe etc. Also a bowling alley or go karting would be a great addition to the town.

There used to be a Supermacs on Bridge street but it closed after a fairly short time

An Asian Street Food restaurant opening where Mamma Mia was.

Hopefully its similiar to Neo / Papa Riches in Galway rather than the standard Chinese already available in Castlebar

Its not mind blowing food, but its solid and they have a good selection, something different for the town, never really was a fan of any of the Chinese or Thai restaurants we have had, always more miss than hit.

Westport is a tourist town that is why good grub places do well as do traditional pubs. Why do you think people would want a burger joint and bowling or karting? There is enough fast food places already there to cater for those who eat such.

There are a few fast food places, but not many to sit down in, but, yes, there are a lot of other eating establishments available that probably suffice.
As regards the bowling or karting, I just think that, with Westport being a popular tourist town, especially with families, these would be other activities tourists could avail of, without having to go to Castlebar for them. Even for the locals, especially teenagers. There's the Wild West Play centre for younger kids, but not much for teenages, IMO.

123, I recall from her posts that Sillysu has just recently moved to Westport with her family. Rather unfair to expect her to personally invest in projects.

As my own children have grown up, and my local grandchildren are very young, I am not in touch re all current facilities. However there are a wide range of clubs in the town and area. most of which have active programs.

There is an a skateboard park at the West Road. The mountains and sea with all their possibilities are close to the town.

My experience is that Westport is a safe and good place for children.

I wish Sillysu and her family all the best here

Yes looking at my post again it does seem that I am being harsh which was not my intention.

Having been in that area for a fair bit longer I have seen things come and go and the reality is that ......it is a tourist based town that caters for the tourists. Most other things come and go most probably because when the tourists go back home there isn't enough income to pay the bills throughout the winter from the population that lives there and because what isn't there is available in Castlebar down the road.

One answer would be to increase the population with all associated problems that come with that. But then the tourists would no longer come so then the town and area would suffer.

I do not know the answer but wish Sillysu the best.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to look like the blow in who wants to change Westport. I think it's a lovely town, and appreciate you are here a lot longer and know it a lot better, but as Nuac said, I am new to here, with my children and I suppose I'm looking for different activites for various ages for them, but I'm sure there's plenty that I have not discovered yet. That was just my tuppenceworth. Didn't mean to offend!!!!
