New edition of this magazine has come out in the last couple of days, I picked it up in town today but haven't had a chance to read it yet, I think it is the 8th monthly edition so far. I have bought them all as I've been impressed from day 1 and myself and the missus both get something from it.
I just wanted to start a thread to compliment the magazine as I haven't seen it mentioned here before. I don't know an awful lot about these things but the production values appear to be absolutely outstanding, the photography is amazing and some of the fashion shoots are so edgy you would think they had been stolen from French Vogue. It's hard to believe that this magazine is published and distributed only in Limerick, well done guys, outstanding work. Surely the people responsible will move onto bigger and better things, can't be much money in this.

Its a great magazine. The photographer is Tarmo Tulitt and is a very talented guy had the pleasure of being in the same photography course as him in LCFE. Lovely guy as well.

Must say it to the missus about stocking this in her shop. Never heard of it before now

I've been dipping in and out over the weekend. Good issue certainly but not my favourite, the fashion shoot was bordering on porn at times:pac:, there's one of a model handling a banana which is protruding from her bikini bottom as she is covered in watermelon juice (I kid you not, if it was 30 years ago it would either be removed from the shelves or would have sold out in minutes:P).
Very good interview with David Norris, excellent article about the mismanagement of the Irish language. As a male I have one issue with the mens fashion page, there was a picture of a pair of trousers from the Paul Smith jeans range and a suggestion that it was available in BT. But I'm pretty sure Limerick BT doesn't stock Paul Smith Jeans. It's a small thing I know.

Yes angeleyes, I reckon that guy is a superb photographer, I know nothing about photography but it seems so much better than you'd expect from outside of the very highest end of fashion(or any) photography.

Some decent stuff in it. Bit too much of a hipster circle jerk though imo.

What I was going to say. Production is high, as well as the photos etc, but some of the people featured it could be called nothing more than big fish in a small pond.

I know it's aimed at Limerick only, so they are possibly relevant big fish in the small pond, but it only adds to the existing hipster circle jerk.

Too stylish and progressive for my taste.

I'm not sure if you're taking the píss or not, stylish and progressive can't be bad things surely????

I love the hipster circle jerk term but I haven't found that the case to be honest, they can be a bit over the top with regard to LGBT issues but the profiles tend to be of people in business or involved in promotion of the city than what I would consider overtly hipster. I also like the idea that the profiles etc are of what Seachto referred to as 'big fish in a small pond', I think that's the whole point, you won't see these people in a national magazine but you'll spot them around town etc. I usually buy Esquire magazine and Sports Illustrated also, there's an awful lot more good reading in them but I love the local aspect of Fusion and I'll say again that the production values are superb, it even feels quality compared to other mags.

This is part of the problem. It's only massaging an already inflated ego in a lot of these folk.

e.g. Local property developer's friends writing about how great said local property developer is.

I could be wrong but I can't recall any of those being featured in Fusion. Am I wrong?
Is this an example of the begrudgery I was accused of in complaining about the Paul o Connell mania that is going around

I'm with you here, I remember the Rubberbandits, and Darren Shan and the latest cover is David Norris I think. It looks like a regular glossy to me (it is a cheap read on my lunch break).
There didn't seem to be the back patting (though I'm out of the social circle by a mile so probably wouldn't notice if there was  )
I'm glad to see something more than the leader and post on the shelves as an option for Limerick. Though I do wonder why anyone bothers to try and do anything in Limerick with all the begrudgery out there.

You can't please all the people , some of the people mentioned in this thread do great work for limerick and paint limerick in a fantastic light, Nigel especially with his articles on Limerick.

Fusion magazine is fantastic and long may it last.

Is this magazine still for sale? Have been meaning to pick up a copy but haven't come across it for the last while...... Does anyone which shops stock it?

EDIT: Scratch that, I just checked their Fb, latest issue features Andy Lee and is available in Easons :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,747 ✭✭✭Swiper the fox

Yeah, latest issue with Andy Lee on the cover features a good interview with the man himself, profiles some young Irish designers, brilliant photography as always.
Quite a strange article under the men's fashion heading which is about the autumn/winter collection of JW Anderson, unlikely to appeal to even the most cutting edge of Limerick men

The production quality is excellent, in my opinion.

That said it's a glossy in every sense of the word, and is fairly pretty light in content from what I've seen. There's a really good platform there to develop it into something good though. If it had articles tackling local issues with some depth and analysis it could be very valuable for the city. The feel-good, positivity articles alluded to earlier in the thread are all well and good but they can be damaging as they divert debate away from the very important stuff. Sometimes it's better to cast a cold, critical eye on what's going on in the city and I hope Fusion are prepared to do that.

Isn't this what the local newspapers should be doing? Could or should Fusion be able to criticise local media if they're not doing it. Maybe they wouldn't as it's a small town after all...

The local media certainly don't do it (but they should be). Yeah, it's a small town and there's too many cosy relationships between those making the big decisions effecting the city and those who are meant to be scrutinising those decisions.

    "You're great!"

"No. You're great. Shur we're mates anyway."

You get it with some covers gigs in Limerick. "Tonight. Live in ___ , featuring ___ "

    Featuring? Really? Who?

Having read almost all of the magazines to date I really still can't tell what you are talking about.
Before you continue with your assault could you furnish us with an example of a particular feature from the magazine that you are referring to?

The new monthly magazine is excellent and both the magazine and the free monthly one compliment each other, will be looking forward to reading both of them .

I would think myself judging from the articles covered in both that some of the people in the pictures are actually of people who work in the entertainment, marketing industry etc so I'm sure if people wanted to get involved and have coverage of their events or business's etc etc I hear the paper and magazine are very much on board and I know for a fact they help people out and are all for promoting limerick , it takes a lot of balls to enter into such a venture and a lot of work , money on the line so well done and from what I hear everyone will be supporting the new publication , limerick needs more of this .

You pay to get in the magazine then ?

I can see Fusion closing and just turning into the new free magazine prob makes sense no way they can keep two going

I came across the free monthly magazine over the weekend. I can't say I would be going out of my way to pick it up again. It's a fairly vacuous and dull read. There were two articles that had some level of depth to them, namely the Shakespearean actress and the weight loss piece. The rest of it is the same superficial, arty farty stuff that is done to death in local Limerick media.

I think the magazine could work if it set itself up as an alternative viewpoint of Limerick and had pieces that challenged the established media. Something akin to Mongrel or Rabble would work well, that allowed for a satirical or distinctive slant on Limerick issues. At the moment, it's really nothing new or exciting and I can't really see it lasting too long.

Anyone remember Crude magazine? I think it only survived for 5 issues, but it was great for local bands, artists, etc.

The Limerick Event Guide was great too. I was always surprised how such a good quality free publication could last as long as it did.

The online event guide on Limerick.ie is very good. However, there is something to be said for having an event guide in paper format that you can just pick up when you're out and about in town. It would be a worthwhile idea for this new magazine to do a comprehensive events listings. At least then it would serve some type of purpose and would be worth getting for that alone.
