Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The comments here about McQuillen being Dublins 16th man are tongue in cheek yeah? He was quite clearly favouring the poor underdogs today.

obviously had no bearing on todays result but he does seem to get a lot of Dublin games. not suggesting anything sinister but it would be interesting to know how many times he has reffed Dublin games

From the TV it looked like Westmeath had a plan but ultimately were outgunned.
Remember that there are some players on the WH team who probably wouldn't even make the Dublin panel.

I guess they were hoping for a better return from their forwards, in the first half they dropped 5 or 6 into Cluxton's hands plus Martin missed a scorable free, so they could have been closer at half time.

They played some cross field balls into Martin and Heslin which didn't come to anything, plus Egan, Sharry, even the wing backs joined in the attack at times.

To win they needed to keep Dublin from scoring goals and hope for some luck or brilliance upfront which didn't work out.

The problem was they didn't put anyone up front. It's not as obvious on the tv but anyone at the match could see it. A max of 2 forwards even when they had the ball. Any time westmeath won the ball they seemed to have 5 players hanging around the half way line instead of countering looking for the ball.

There was no interest in trying to score or win the match and this was a final

    FYP.

The Westmeath defensive plan was actually working really well in the first half. And it wasn't even particularly complicated: get 13 men inside their own 45. It was pretty effective, and the Dublin forwards were clearly frustrated. They shot quite a lot of wides, and most of them was from forced shots from distance.

However, unless you're hoping to draw the game 0-0 and take them back to Cusack Park for the replay, you have to have an offensive plan as well, and Westmeath clearly didn't have one. For the majority of their attacks, the first person over the 65 was the ball-carrier. The only players ahead of him were the two forwards. He invariably had to turn back, and their attacking play was incredibly slow as a result. Good defensive teams need to have lightning-quick counter-attacks. Westmeath didn't.

Also, the WH goalkeeper was shocking. Obviously poor for the first goal, awful for the second, but his kickouts were a serious weakness for Westmeath. Westmeath had two solid fielders of the ball (Paddy Holloway and Ray Connellan, I think, 8 and 11). Rarely was the ball kicked anywhere near them. Everytime there was a kickout, he seemed to look for a Westmeath player in isolation, totally disregarding how many team-mates were anywhere near him for a breaking ball. I haven't seen any stats, but I'd be surprised if Westmeath won even 30% of their own kickouts, and most of those were short ones

It would be even more interesting if you could find even one of those matches where he gave more kickable frees to Dublin than the opposition.

He has a clever bias against Dublin.

Meath would have given Dublin a much better game had they not so spectacularly imploded and lost the plot a couple of weeks ago.

6 points scored by Westmeath today. That's dreadful by any standard. Had that Westmeath and Meath gone to a replay, Meath would have trounced them. It would have been the first half x2. Who would fear Westmeath after today?

I could be pathetic next week when Mayo are 10 points up on Sligo and say that Roscommon would have given Mayo a better game but I won't as it's great to see small counties like Westmeath and Sligo in Provincial finals.

Yes Westmeath were poor yesterday especially in the second half and I would have rather we lost by 25 points and scored 1-10, but you can't blame the management for parking the bus like many other teams will do in the rest of the championship. More worrying is John Heslin's injury, hopefully he will be fit for Fermanagh.
