    I know two guys on my course who did it and both thought differently of it.

    One had been out of education for a long time, and had done a poor leaving cert so found the year getting back into the academic "swing" well worth while and he feels he would have struggled going straight into the course.

    The second had been better academically in his leaving certificate and had worked in a field where a lot of self-learning was required, so felt less benefit for it , and in fact regarded it as a loss of a year.

    This probably does not help you a lot - but it may give you an idea of the two opposite ends of the spectrum and may help you position yourself somewhere in between.
