That 50-50 position Hall does reminds me of in the old fighting or wrestling computer games, where you'd have a cheap move to use if your opponent started getting ahead, but it's sort of unfair to use as it's nearly always a win with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,516 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

Hall seems like a good guy too, hard to dislike him.

That heel hook is nasty, guys actively training against his position and still getting caught. Hope he goes far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

Hall is special, though Slioa did himself no favours as he had an opportunity to get back to his feet when Hall initially transitioned. It was probably just a matter of time before Hall got it anyway I suppose. He'll be hard to stop.

Some great banter between McGregor and Faber again. I really like the dynamic between them so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 537 ✭✭✭clever user name

Hall has a mental advantage before anyone even steps in the cage with him. Every one he faces is scared stiff of getting their legs wrapped that he's forcing them to change the way the fight, in a sense. Especially when he's facing a predominately stand up fighter, they're constantly going to be worried about getting too close to him. Actually, someone like McGregor is best equipped to fight Hall...fast hands, utilizes his reach well and has that long stance with one leg much further forward to than the other. Either way, he's going to be tough to beat!

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

I knew it was going to be Hall because the fight didn't start in the episode until 5 minutes from the end :)

He might have won with his trademark style but hey, so does Rousey and she's the champ! It up to the others to defeat him and negate his skills, that's what the whole sport is about.
As well as that, I think he DOES have a bunch of other things in his toolbox that we haven't seen yet. The guy is a world champion BJJ fighter, he's already won his way to the top of a combat sport so in that respect he has been here before compared to the others.

Oh and Artem's old opponent didn't seem particularly happy to see him back eh?! :)

Whatever about Artem getting in, but Nunez getting back in is actually a bit of a joke really. There were far more worthy fighters based on the opening fights IMO. Team Alpha Male being obsessed with wrestlers, who would have guessed?

Bringing an NCAA Division 1 wrestler back was a purely tacticalll choice by Faber. That sort of grappling game will be something the European camp will have no way of Handling. Himself and Hall will be the biggest worry for the European camp.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,405 ✭✭✭Lukker-

I thought that ginger guy Welch I think was far more deserving then Nunez, he was well on top in his fight but got crumpled by a monster shot to the liver.

I was hoping Hall would win, he seems like a really sound guy.

His game was hugely developed around the 50/50 though

Bringing Artem back was a load of bollix. There was so many better fighters to choose from.

I agree his entrance fight should have gone to a 3rd but it wasn't an exciting fight, he wasn't technical, there was no finesse - just plodding forward and trading shots.

I taught it was fair enough, he's quite clearly what dana wants especially with the whole 9 fights and one will miss out if it's not an exciting victory, both picks were biased though. There was no way the American was deserving of getting back in based on what we seen it was because of his background. Who would you have had ahead of Artem anyway?

There was one who I thought was pretty decent; that Croatian dude Sikic (sp?) and definitely more entertaining than Artem.

I just don't think that Artem has the skill-set to make it in the UFC. As someone said before, he reminds me of Pendred. Not highly skilled but will happily walk forward, giving and taking a punch.

Not a huge point to make but a point none the less, he has a terrible record too

Your first post said there was so many others who could have been brought back ahead of Artem but then you only name one. And the one you name is the lad who dislocated his shoulder so he couldn't be called back anyway! I agree that Artem looked a it laboured at times but he was probably one of two that deserved to have been brought back in my opinion, the other being Gouti who lost the first Europen fight.

He never asked me to list multiple fighters. I would have listed Thibault too if he did.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on Artem coming back. I've explained my reasoning above. Had the fight gone a third round it might have been a different story...

So why name the one who was injured and couldn't possibly be called back? I don't think Artem will go too far anyway but it was a toss up between him and Thibault as to who got the recall. The decision against Artem was a somewhat contentious one, with McGregor, White and Faber all believing he won the first round. Where Thibault's defeat was unanimous with little grumblings, so I don't think there can be too many complaints.

Artem got brought back because he is Conor's friend.

Thibault looked great even in defeat. Artem didn't look great tbh. Any other coach making said decision would have decided to bring back Thibault as he looked a much better fighter, regardless of the " should have gone to a 3rd round" issue.

Am i the only one who thinks Conors banter isnt great ? There is couple of lines he uses that were obviously prepared beforehand but when put on the spot he seems to be struggling.

Be interesting to see who he loses it with next week . Puts to bed the rumours he wasnt interested.

To an extent I can see Conor's point... its a bit cold but its probably the truth. This show is a blip ... in a few weeks they wont be on any team so they need to see the bigger picture which is "stay looking out for yourself". They need to build themselves up as fighters and (in some people's eyes 'unfortunately') as a "brand".

They're entering big boy league and they should be ready to handle their own business. Too often TUF is populated with guys who seem to want their arses wiped for them and who are passengers in their own careers it seems. The guys who haven't seemed that way have tended to continue on into great careers (TJ springs to mind but there have been others).

Conors point that they have already done the main work of building their body and their muscles etc is very well made. This isn't the time to start building cardio and conditioning, this isn't the time to start working on learning brand new styles of fighting. Its the time to learn some very specific things and work on specific counters to upcoming opponents. If you're a wrestler, the house isn't the time to decide you want to become a Muay Thai specialist! :) )

You see guys going crazy on the treadmills and bikes and I think to myself, all they are doing is running down their ATP stores and wearing out muscles (with the exception of weight cuts of course). McGregor (or at least Kavanagh via McGregor) are talking sense when they say its time to upgrade the software without damaging the hardware.

From the career point of view, if these guys aren't way more motivated than their coaches (or indeed anyone else) to further their own careers, then there is something seriously wrong. They shouldn't need anyone to organise them, to cajole them into training or get them "jazzed up" for the house. If they are going to go anywhere in this business they should already have that in spades.

I like Artem, he's a gent and i'd love to see him to very very well. But his being brought back in is a load of bollix! Would there have been people brought back in had Artem got through originally? F*ck no!

Dana White needs to change his stance on leaving it in the hands of the judges.

"Never leave it in the hands of the judges...... unless you're Conor McGregor's mate. Then you can pretty much do what you like"

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,405 ✭✭✭Lukker-

They both brought back the wrong fighter, but whats Conor gonna do not bring back Artem? Faber obviously brought back that dude because he has a hard on for wrestlers.

I wonder this pre-planned or just just a reaction to Artem not making the cut, to keep Conor happy.

If you forget the fact it’s Artem involved, I like it as a concept for the show. Plenty of fights in TUF are ruined by the better wrestler laying on or up against the fence for 2 rounds. I understand it’s down to the other guy to counter it but it leads to terrible viewing.

How can you not root for Hall, unreal skill, seems down to earth, intelligent and no interest in the HEY BROOOOO banter. Like someone else said, instance advantage going into the fight with the other guy straight on defence worrying about his legs.

Nice banter between Conor and Uriah, as awkward as it gets, it's nice to seem them having fun instead of constantly getting to each other.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,683 ✭✭✭Subcomandante Marcos

I think Hall is just a smart guy who knows how good he is. He doesn't pretend to be humble and he doesn't pretend to be someone he isn't. He knows that once he gets past your arms and legs and gets you into a grappling match it's over, he has you.

I actually think he's a breath of fresh air, he's articulate and honest.

I also think it's hilarious when Faber is almost fanboying out when talking to or about Hall. He has some sort of man crush on him. Which isn't surprising, he's probably been watching Hall's DVD's for years.

I agree with Conor suggesting they go it alone and you make a good point there, a lot of the outcasts were most successful. Rashad wasn't liked by a lot of people and did his own thing, TJ as well but they didn't really care. Diaz used to train with both teams which pissed off Pulver but he did it for his own benefit and didn't give a crap about teams. The whole 'go red team!' attitude is dumb, you'll probably have to fight someone from your own team at some stage if you want to win anyway. By all means make friends but its still an individual sport bib or no bib.

I thought initially the whole "bring one back" thing was at Conor's request and the fact that it wasn't stated before the start seems fishy BUT the way they explained the "one winner WONT be going through" makes me reconsider that... its actually fairly clever!

We've all seen guys who lay-n-pray their way in the house (eh... almost all of last season? :) ).... clearly this annoys Dana and also it *kills* viewing figures as these fights aren't exciting to watch. Now, as the competitors were saying on the show... you not only have to win but you have to win in an exciting fight! This seems like a perfect antidote to a problem White has had with the show for a long time.

Still smells a bit , but hey.... I like Artem so here's hoping he smashes it this time around.

Artem is a true fighter. If you actually look at his record and see who he fought you would realise its not terrible.

Many of Artems losses came as he took fights on extremely short notice and often fought local boys on local show abroad. He did this simply because he wanted to fight, anyone, anytime, anywhere. He is a true fighter, not someone who looked to pad their record and get in the UFC with a UD beside their name.

Loads of fighters on the European circuit avoided Artem to the point he jumped at any opportunity to get a fight. Personally I would much prefer to see someone like him in the UFC than someone with a padded record.

This can be true if someone is 20-0 before they get to the UFC as the UFC is the highest level, so it's possible they haven't fought anyone before they got there.

However, if someone is 11-10 before they get into the UFC, chances are they aren't going to be scratching the upper tiers of their division once they get their chance (Unless you're Matt Brown).

I wouldn't be betting against what you say, but it can also be the case that a fighter makes rash decisions early on, doesn't get the coaching he needs and perhaps starts his professional fighting career too early... we've seen fighters who's record was pretty poor suddenly morph into very respectable fighters because they worked on a big hole in their game or sometimes just because diamond sharpens steel... TJ wasn't much until he honed his muay thai with Bang ...

Conor is amazing at pushing buttons, he had Faber so flustered at the weigh-ins.

Seriously poor showing by the european guy, I can understand why Conor was so frustrated. There's complaints about corners not giving specific advice and shouting 'stand up' but in this situation it made sense as he was getting into positions to stand but then flopping back onto his back.

Hall was on the fox sports show after and came across great again. Artem was on too and came across pretty well too.

I have no idea what the European lad was doing  He should have stayed standing of course, but apart from that his takedown attempts were awful, he was coming in too low. Plus you could see them coming a mile away.
