I would imagine that they see it as poorly written and lacking context, as anyone would. It possibly might work as a TV ad, with two people watching a whodunnit type show on different networks. Maybe.

But on a billboard it's just a poor ad. Not an offensive one. A poor one.

When I saw it originally I assumed it meant "The girl you were chatting up turned out to be a bloke", can easily see how trans people took offense.

Not sure how it's suppose to be obvious that it's a TV/movie reference.

It says it on the poster that you wont miss the finale of what youre watching

But the ad left out anything to show its referencing a movie. Or the "enjoy the finale" bit ,is that it?

Ah yeah can see it now, was half blocked in the picture in the journal article.

I'd no idea what it was about as I've never seen the movie.

And isn't that movie at least twenty years old?

I thought it was to do with downloading songs :o

    The article says

The billboard says: “Sorry Vodafone customers It turned out he was a she after you’d used all your data”.
The text box underneath tells customers that they will not run out of data before the finale of a film they’re watching”.

Does it not say that? I havent seen the ad

Links, to me it's only referencing The Crying Game surprise ending - no different to referencing the surprise ending of The Empire Strikes Back or The Sixth Sense; subject matter irrelevant. Is it that there's a double meaning to this particular ad that implies trans people are deceptive? If so, it's not obvious at all IMO.

TBH as the days and weeks go by I am really getting a pain in my behind with the near constant array of a minority of special snowflakes taking "offence" at every bloody thing and crying "phobic" at every bloody turn.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Seems to say "the finale", not specifically TV/Movie. It's also in much smaller writing.

The Ad wasn't about trans people...stop trying to make it an issue.
You live in a world where misunderstandings and misinterpretations occur. Either wrap yourself up in cotton wool or become the type of person who doesn't get offended by every slight - real or imagined.

As someone who hasn't seen the movie, I didn't get that reference at all. Easy to see how people who haven't wouldn't get it.

I have done and I don't see how it could possibly be considered transpohbic.

To me the ad looks as if it is not aimed at any gender for a start, as it's addressed to "customers," and then just seems as it if it is poking fun at someone that felt they were chatting to a man, but where in fact talking to a woman.

If anything, the fact that they were sexually ambiguous with the ad, would suggest they were not being transphobic or any kind of phobic for that matter. Seems an open minded ad to me and one which was deliberately designed to be so.

    Should never have been withdrawn.

Yes it does. Apparently most people read the banner and not the whole ad and auto-engaged the outrage mode.

I thought it was about a baby being born

Christ I was way off. How is this offensive though? Surely just a bad ad that needs context. It doesn't imply that he being a she is bad, more that it's a shock. Honestly there's a lot of transphobia out there, but in this case people need to get over themselves.

And I ****ing hate tumblr. Are there any non 'middle class girl but I'm still oppressed and get offended for every minority ever concocted' on it?

Heaven forbid they might ask someone or look for information online instead of jumping straight into outrage mode of course.

I was a Vodafone customer 11 years ago. Still, im deeply offended by the 'sorry Vodafone' bit. Who do I sue?

I didn't even twig it as a reference to the crying game at all at first because of the wording "turns out he's a she" when in the crying game the reveal is that dil has a penis so it's kinda got the twist backward

It could just as easily be misunderstood as being about a Catfish, right?

Well, this mob is just as scary!
It's not, but they are being absolute arseholes IMO the way they're behaving.

Social media really does bring out the dick in some towards service providers. The Three "Facebook guys" aren't responsible for the ad, the people being so obnoxious to them know they can't defend themselves, they also know that no offence was intended yet they're still "outraged" so they're clearly enjoying the drama and the revelling in offence that wasn't intended.

In general I'm a liberal but those clowns don't speak for me with their little obnoxious cyber-bullying wars. Tolerant my hole.

Ah it says finale. Still a poor ad, but not offensive at all, not that I thought it was before but surely that's clarity. Another case of trial by Internet.

I agree the outrage is an overreaction, I'm just saying I can understand how it was misinterpreted.

Indeed, and even when you give respect to how it may "come across" (ie: ignore the movie reference and just focus on the large font) it still doesn't come across to me as being transphobic.

What I mean is, you couldn't even be of the opinion that they were being transphobic and the movie reference below was their get out of jail clause.

    Maybe I'm missing something.

So then what, the default setting is to be outraged? Ffs

I've neither made it an issue, nor taken offense. All I asked was that folks try and see how the ad might come across.

If that ad is the worst thing you see today you have a pretty sweet life.

Another day another trans bashing thread. As a transsexual myself I'm delighted they decided to remove that ad'. My life as a transwoman is hard enough what with job discrimination and parental rejection without being taken the piss out off on national t.v. via insulting stereotypes. Try my life for a week and you would soon change your tune. You are on the wrong side of history.

Moreover the people complaining about it being removed really need to understand economics. They were not forced to remove the ad, they choose to remove it- supply and demand etc. Seriously guys it's economics 101.

You really honestly can't do or say anything anymore without offending someone the way society has gone.

Everyday there's something new to be outraged about........ Uhh.

Well if you live in the liberal western world where all your basic needs are met and the majority of the whims of the over stimulated online mind are catered for, you kinda have to make up drama to get the drama fix that seems to be required by the type.
