Sound quality dreadful on wall mounted TV

I have mounted a Toshiba 22" tv (22av615db) on the wall in our kitchen as part of a kitchen upgrade and find the sound quality is just dreadful. Adjusting the sound settings has not helped. Poor sound quality seems a feature of thin flatscreen tv's and I have seen costly sound bars that seem to solve the problem. Is there a more economic solution that does not cost as much or more than the tv? I remember seeing tiny usb speakers for laptops that gave out powerful sound for tiny money... sub €40. Is there an equivalent for tv's?

Cheap pair of pc speakers will work. Provided they require a plug and your TV has an earphone socket.
Poor sound quality is not a "Feature" of flat screen TV more of a consequential byproduct of there flatness ; thinner screen / bezel = less space for bigger speakers.
