Hey guys, Ive always been intrigued how green cards worked and was wondering if anyone had any experiences, how the process works. I was thinking of applying for the 2017 application. Cheers

There are a number of ways to get it - the greencard lottery I am assuming is what you are referring to. I work with a guy that got it 3 years ago.

There are 50,000 visas with around 125000 "winners". , last year 143 Irish were selected and there 9.3 Million applicants. Each country is assigned a set number of visas.

Unfortunately, the odds of winning are low, but if you aren't in you can't win :D.

Its the best way into the USA too. Full residency with no messing about with the various visas.

I wonder what the specific odds are for Irish applicants?

this thread covers all these type of questions already here ->

Roughly about 1.43% chance if on average of 10k apply from Ireland.
Suspect there may be closer to over 20,000 regular/repeat applicants,
so therefore maybe realistically 0.5% chance of success per application.

according to this site - http://www.usadiversitylottery.com/green_card_lottery_winning_odds.php (do not use this site to apply...it's a scam -
for the last lottery there were 11000ish applicants with 138 winning - giving the odds of 1.20%

That site is one of the many 'unofficial' scam/fee based type sites, avoid like the plague! They will most likely charge a fee to do what you can do for free, also their data protection policy & encryption may (or may not be) top notch.

Unlikely also they would have the correct application data from the DV-2016 applications unless it was publicly announced on a Press Release. Saying that 10-20k is a good type of ballpark figure.

There is no fee to apply from the official proper government site.

A friend of ours won a green card a couple of years ago. The entry process is simple enough, you give your basic details and upload a passport type photo. If you get selected they mail you a letter around May or June the following year to start the process, then I believe you go for an interview a couple of months after that and if that all goes okay you get issued with entry clearance a couple of months later. The actual shiny Green Card arrives in the post a few months after you enter I believe.
