What are your thoughts lads, can it be done? Could it lower emissions enough to pass under the new tax as the engine is post June 2008? Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated! :)

It won't be taxed under new rules.

I'd say a good 09 5200d engine is commanding a hefty price these days.
There's garages that try to keep several in stock so they don't have to go looking for them...

The new tax rules only apply to cars first registered from 2008 onwards, it doesn't apply to the year of the engine or it's emissions.

Replacing a 2.5 litre engine with a 2.0 litre engine in a 2003 car will only save you just under €400 a year in motor tax. I'd imagine gearbox, ECU and other bits would also need to be replaced. Between the cost of parts and labour it may take you a number of years through motor tax savings to make your money back on that venture.
