Think of it like this, you have a device such as a keyboard that has usb, however it is the full sized usb plug that will not fit in the micro usb plug in your phone. the OTG adapter will convert the fullsize plug into a micro plug.

Sort of like how you need an adapter to use an Irish appliance in Spain.

    exactly is there purpose

The most common use I'd say is that it allows you to use USB memory sticks which have the regular sized USB plug (like you'd use with a PC) in a phone or tablet which has the smaller microUSB socket (i.e., the charging and data port on most Android devices).

This is particularly useful on devices which do not have a slot for an SD card as it allows you to, at least temporarily, have more storage available.

For example, say you are at a wedding, taking lots of photos or videos and your internal storage is starting to fill up and you are running out of space. You can use this to move the photos to a memory stick, "on the go", without using a PC computer, free up the internal space and continue taking photos.

Most phones will only take devices with with connection type on the right whereas most USB devices are the type of the connection on the left.

For example, you won't be able to connect a normal USB memory stick to a phone as they are a different connection type, if you get an adapter like this you can connect a normal memory stick to it.

Personally, I've a tablet for work that I use for some presentations, I've a bluetooth keyboard for it as well which is handy, thanks to this device I can connect a normal mouse to it as well so it's like a proper laptop if I need it to be. I'll be keeping 1 of these yokes in my laptop bag, 1 at home and 1 in my desk at work, they are extremely useful but I'll use them extremely rarely, at less than 80c for 4 of them you can't go wrong.

On supported devices, ........USB flash drives, etc.

Is there any way of knowing if a device is supported?

On second thoughts, I will ask this over on the Android forum.

Ordered the 15th of August, received mine yesterday.
Got 2, a medium-blue and a oxide-red coloured adapter. Unreal value for 37 cents, especially when you consider that includes postage from China.
I'm well happy with them, and many thanks again to the OP for bringing this BA to us.
