Congrats. Sensational scrummaging display. And generally excellent defence.

Sorry but that NZ commentator is fine he even gave Ryan MOTM.

How long has Ruddock been the u20s coach now? I'm glad he has a result like this to show for all the work he's done

The Welsh will beat NZ. Pack is there to be targeted. Unusual for a NZ team.

Great game, especially considering the small turnaround.

Ruddock is gone. Nigel Carolan in charge the last two years

What a fantastic win. The U20's are looking very well coached and are playing some great, successful rugby. Hopefully the seniors don't let us down now.

    Oh :o

Obviously it's the Connacht factor then that won them the match then

So Irish understand 20s don't have the skills or size buccs? Historic day...an irish team that shows balls. Genetics my arse. James Ryan will captain Ireland.

Brilliant performance totally deserved that win

    Delighted

We can go all the way bandwagon starts here

wow - didn't see that coming - feared for Irish rugby recently after WC and the Puma youngsters - this result is amazing and shows the future is good

Of course with my taxi duties (fcuk you kids birthday parties) this was the one match I was going to miss today.

Fair play to the cubs...hopefully an omen for the future.

Fantastic win, the injury to Johnston is a worry, McPhillips was a liability during the six nations and his defence wouldn't be the best, I imagine Connon will now come into the squad. James Ryan will captain Ireland someday, he was phenomenal.

Was there any update on Johnston's injury? Did he dislocate the same shoulder again?

Delighted, didn't see this coming after the u20 Six Nations, when looking at us versus Wales and France but we have obviously improved since then immensely! Great performance. That James Ryan is some bit off stuff but all the players played brilliantly!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭Moflojo

The most impressive thing for me was how mature the decision making was by Ireland in the last twenty minutes. There was no sense of panic, no sign of pressure (and there was pressure). It was similar during the sin bin period for Ireland, which they almost escaped without conceding a score.

    Bravo lads, thoroughly deserved victory.

Porter was my MotM. Was brilliant at scrum time, tackled and carried willingly and was an all around beast.

What do you mean by early? Theyre good but let see them at pro12 level first. Think how much either have played at A level never mind not playing pr12 yet.

Should be noted that that was as poor a baby blacks team as I've ever seen. Jordie barrett carried them.

I just like enjoyable rugby not results. Its what I teach my kids. Go out and enjoy yourself. The result doesn't matter. What our u-20s play is quality rugby. Congrats Dan McFarland.

    Looking at groups
We're on 8 points, like Argentina in group C. England lead Group B on 10 points.
Argentina play the Japanese so should comfortably win that and qualify for semis. We should beat Georgians to win Group A

England play Australia in last round of games. Aussies on 6 so if they win could qualify for semis

    How does this tournament work?

There's 3 pools of 4 teams, so how many come out of the pools?

They all do, there's different tiers of playoffs. Ireland will be aiming for the top 4.

NZ stuck 55 on the georgians so you gotta think Ireland will win the group.

So it's a bit like 7s? With a Cup, Bowl, Plate kind of thing?

In terms of winning the competition only four teams qualify - the three group winners and the best second place team. The other eight teams stay involved but play for the lesser positions of 5th to 12th.

Two group winners look like being Ireland and Argentina, either England and Australia will go through also. The last spot will likely be between the losers of England v Australia and New Zealand.

I like that system. They really should carry it through at all levels. Gives lower ranked and developing countries added incentive to compete.

Bad news for Johnston if this is true
Murray Kinsella (@Murray_Kinsella) tweeted at 10:14 PM on Sat, Jun 11, 2016:

Hearing Bill Johnston's World Rugby U20 Championship may be over with dislocated shoulder. Brett Connon possible replacement for Ireland.
