Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

These things are gas craic. I reckon McGregor would whip his willy out, wrap it around POC's neck and start him like a lawn mower. Then afterwards they may even have a scrap

How do genuinely believe would the fight would unfold /finish...

    Why paul o connell?
Mcgreg is world champ in his sport at his prime. Paulie is amazing but 35 and a lock - dynamic for his position but no usain bolt.

How about cian healy or sean o brien 2 years ago? Now thatd be worth a lot of money to see. Those guys can move as fast as anything on 2 legs over a few metres...

    It's a fight, not a race.
Being Usain Bolt is not going to help you.

How about Conor McGregor v Gennady Golovkin at 160llbs?
Conor kicks him a few times, takes him down and submits him straight away.
In a stand up contest it's lights out McGregor. Don't forget that McGregors main strength (other than his big gob) is his timing in letting his hands go. Honed during his time as an amateur boxer. And he was never an elite boxer.
He would never decide to make it a boxing match. Why would anyone do that? There's a routine path to winning.
I really respect MMA fighters for their heart and athleticism but even the very best (GSP's and Anderson Silva's etc...) are jacks of all trades rather than being truly great in one discipline.
Thats exactly why they can dictate how the fight goes. They have a broad skillset. You don't need to be remotely close to expert level to submit an untrained novice.
And before anyone mentions ju jitsu belt colours etc.... Anyone who has one will tell you the very subjective nature of how they are awarded.
I have one, they are awarded based on opinion, in that regard they are subjective. But that opinion is based on actual performance in competition and resisted situations. So the belt standards are far more uniform that not competitive arts.
The slight subjectivity is irrelevant here. A BJJ brown belt will submit an untrained guy 100% of the time without breaking a sweat. I don't imagine Blues and purples having much trouble either.

I fully respect GG in an animal in a boxing ring. But the whole boxer verses grappler arguement was put to bed 20 years ago.

With all due respect Hyland isn't an elite boxer. Nor was a well beyond shot James Toney at that stage of his life.

How about Conor McGregor v Gennady Golovkin at 160llbs?

Boxers of equal weights have no chance, this has been proven time and again. They are not accustomed to it.

The boxer will need a huge size advantage, I wouldn't even be sure a giant 250lb 6'6 Klitschko would be able to beat an elite ufc fighter of 170/180lb in the cage.

    Paul O Connell lol

    Who has he beaten?

Paul o O'Connell has the one thing MacGregor will never have...... Munster Pashun!
A win for Paulie unless he takes it easy on the little fella

Since when is cage fighting a sport? Will it ever be in the Olympics?

It can't be in the Olympics because judo, taekwondo, wrestling and boxing are already in the Olympics . That's basically mma

Not only that but most of the boxers in the Irish elite squad would hammer McGregor in about 3 minutes.

David Haye on boxers versus MMA fighters:

“Six months of training isn’t going to be enough. As a UFC fan, I know two or three years wouldn’t be enough. How many times has Toney sprawled in his life? 500? How many leg kicks has he taken in his life? 300? How many Kimura attempts has he defended? 140? Even if he’s done double that amount, he wouldn’t have nearly the experience needed to win a UFC fight.”

“I know from training in MMA myself that the wrestling aspect ruins your punching power. After a minute of grappling, your arms, back and shoulders fill with blood and even if you then find space to throw punches, your power is suddenly crap."

“And I hit a lot harder and I’m so much faster than James, and I couldn’t land a punch on fighters when all they wanted to do was take me down to the ground. James is a much more static fighter than I am, and is going to get thrown on his back immediately by Randy. I admire Toney’s spirit and boxing skills. But he’s delusional here.”

MMA champs are at the pinnacle of their sport, they are not jacks of all trades, they are masters of the art of fighting. That being said if you give up 7 stone on a very athletic opponent who has a natural aggression and competitive nature your gonna have a bad time eg lock in a submission and get spiked of the hard ground (brawl situation).

Try spiking somebody who has their arm wrapped around your neck closing off the blood supply to the brain. No matter how big and strong you are, if somebody with good choking technique locks it on, youre going asleep.
Conor wouldn't be stupid enough to try and get an arm lock on somebody as physically strong as o Connell.

Hong man suffer from gigantism, that was a freak show fight and another can for fedor to crush.

If it was just boxing then 110% POC.
But in reality, CMG would just get him in either a Head/arm/leg hold and that would be the end of it.

Game over... €500000000 each for a ****e fight.

MacGregor is but a mere mortal.... He would just kneel down before the deity that is O'Connell, to suggest he would even raise a hand against Paulie would result in instant smiting I'm afraid

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,395 ✭✭✭nc19

One decent slap from O'Connell would drive the little fella into the middle of next week. Of course if conor could get the ref he had last week he might be able to arrange something with 2 seconds left in the round.

    Bitter much?

so why do boxing ufc etc have weight divisions

So the poll pretty much sums up this thread - POC would win. Thanks for everyone's input it is greatly appreciated.

This thread wouldn't have lasted an hour on Sherdog.

Call this story bs if you will but a well known Irish mma fighter started a fight with a very large guy who proceded to pick up the small mma fighter and throw him around several times until they were separated, size matters.

Jesus Christ, I haven't logged on for a few days and when I do, I'm faced with this thread.
I'm locking this now before we get other ridiculous threads in the same vein. No one cares if McGregor could beat Paul O Connell, Paul McCartney, or Ru Paul.
This is an mma forum; stick to mma talk please.
