    Hi there everyone!
Me and my family just moved here from South Africa and is staying in Barna. We are really interested in buying a boat for pleasure. We are looking for a motor cruizer for under 20 000 euro. Something in the line of sea ray 250. Any advice or words of caution will be greatly appreciated! What is the yearly maintenance about, and any hidden costs?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi Wian132 and welcome, where are you planing on using the boat inland on lakes and rivers or at sea, do you plan on towing the boat to water each time you want to use it or are you thinking of a mooring.
Hidden cost can be anything depending on the boat you buy you might need lifejackets, ropes, fenders, anchor,VHF radio, and so on you will also want to get the boat serviced and a new impeller before you go out on the water. Something like a sea ray 250 will most likely have a 5.7 V8 and at cruising speed around 25 MPH it will burn about 12 gallons per hour :) Mooring fees can anything in and around €1000 per year.
Hope that helps a bit and doesn't put you off :D

Thank you Fergal.d , well we would like to use it on the ocean, and inland lakes now and again. Mooring it looks like the easiest now because we dont stay somewhere we can store it yet. Maybe it can stand at our house in the winter.
    :D

Swing moorings like you would see in a harbour are the cheapest long term but you have to build and put down the mooring yourself so it will cost a few quid to start off they can also be a nightmare as you have to check on them every time there is bad weather you might also have to buy a punt "small boat" to bring you to and from the boat if the harbour doesn't offer the service. A marina would be your best and safest bet, when you get the boat ring around a few places with her length and they will give you a price most of them will also insist on you having insurance. It would be worth your while doing a power boat course http://www.sailgalwaybay.com/isa-powerboat-training-galway/ as this is your first boat and it will bring down your insurance price.
