    Hello community,

Our two and a half year old son has what seems to be "metatarsus adductus" which skews/curves one foot inward and we need to see a specialist soon for him.

We are arriving in Dublin this week (after a long stint in a developing country) and need a pediatrician for our three kids under 3, and a pediatric orthopaedic specialist for our son.

Any guidance and advice very much appreciated as we're new to the medical system in Ireland. We need to see someone soon for this and will pay out of pocket to do so.

    Thank you,

    Orasa

Usually you go see the Public Health Nurse and she refers you to the area doctor and then you get referred for physio.
Vista Care in Naas have physios that deal with children and are very good.

Kids here don't usually have paediatricians unless they are referred to one for a specific reason and would usually see the local gp.

Are you staying in dublin? I can give you a couple names of recommended orthopaedic paediatricians in Crumlin. I will get details tomorrow for you. I worked in ortho for many years myself.

Click on this link and choose a GP in the are your going to be living in. https://www.pcrsonline.ie/libr/html/UGP_GPlist_by_LHO.pdf

Your children under 6 will have free GP care

You would usually go to your local GP who will then refer you to the orthopaeduc specialists. There is free GP care for under sixes, but since you haven't been resident here I'm not sure will you be covered straight away. You may be charged for the GP visit. The specialist will be through the private or public system....may be a longer wait if it's the public system, but a private one will cost a couple of hundred euro if you don't have health insurance.
Generally that's how the system works.I'm afraid I'm not that sure about referring yourself to a specialist, but if you knew a couple of consultant names, you could ask your GP to direct their referral letter to them specifically.

Thank you everyone. We really appreciate the guidance. Sligo1, Yes we are staying in Dublin so names of the orthpedic pediatricians in Crumlin would be great.

No problem, give me a couple hours and I will pm you. I can provide you with a couple names (one recommended by an adult Ortho consultant here at work). Your GP would also be able to provide you with names of you chose not to go with the one I can provide. And if you decide to go with them or not as other posters have said, you would need to get a referral letter from your GP sent to the consultants secretary and also decide whether to go public or private. I'm not sure about public waiting times but private would be a lot quicker.

Ok, so Paula Kelly is a paediatric ortho consultant in Crumlin who specialises in foot and ankle surgery. So you could try her. I have also heard David Moore is excellent to deal with. However, foot and ankle I dont "think" is his speciality. But you could enquire about both. Hope this helps. :)

Unfortunately none of the orthopaedic surgeons work privately in Crumlin. They do in Temple Street. Names wise Ms Kelly works in the Beacon, Mr Kiely in Blackrock and Mr Noel in Santry Sports Clinic. The public waiting lists are extremely long, one of the worst.

I think David Moores private clinic is in Blackrock also.
