Don't know how some people taught mon would include Maguire anyways nothing will happen there until he moves to England I think, disappointed not to see Sheridan get a call up instead of Doyle he's merely there to make up numbers at this stage. Think Long won't start against Austria can see Murphy starting hopefully Walters Long Brady and Wes can all stay fit for this one and for pete sake Martin please start Wes !!! Really looking forward to this one anyone know what time Slatterys opens Sunday mornings lads? :P

as has been mentioned Sheridan has club commitments, not sure if he would have been called up anyway.

In fairness, most aren't "surprised", just irritated and despondent that it is the same old, same old "must be across the Irish sea before he is given a chance" story. Maguire has played and scored at Under 21 level also so its not as if he will be completely overawed.
I would have no doubt that he would make it at a championship level anyway, we need goals so bring in a young and clinical forward playing at a level which isn't as we all know great, but he is head and shoulders the best goal scoring striker in that league at the minute. Even just to get him mixing into the squad as early as possible and not waiting until last minute when he is in his late 20s when the elder men have hung up their boots to draft him in which has been a common occurence in Ireland squads for the last 15 years..

So, no, noone was surprised, just "p1ssed off". Maybe O'Neill should head to a few LOI games and analyse his capabilities head on and then decide rather than give the usual "there a few lads with experience ahead of him at the minute" speel.
Sometimes you have to take gambles and given the situation we are in, up front, it isn't the biggest gamble to give a run out to Maguire in a friendly rather than bring in the "safe choice" Doyle to add to his caps.

Kevin Doyle is the past. Should not be near the panel now.
Stupid from O'Neill not to be trying out new lads in friendlies. That's what they're for imo.
Dinosaur thinking that Doyle is still good enough.

Doyle is only there for the friendly in America as he's based over there and will cost the FAI nothing to fly him over to America and back again. Would be surprised to see him come back to Dublin for the Uruguay and Austria match unless Long and Murphy pick up injuries.

Have always said it but there should be spots in the squad even if it's just for the training camp and not in the match day squad for LOI players. Get them in training with the senior squad to see what level they are at before waiting until they move to England and playing games over there.

Anyone reckon will Marc Wilson get any game time ? I always liked him and was unlucky with injuries back 4 for Austria pending all are fit will surely be Christie,Duffy,OShea,Ward so can't see that changing too much think (hope Brady is played further up the field).
2 midfielders playing deep will be interesting you've Whealan,Arthur,Hendrick and Hourihane(also in with a shout) think Whealan will start and hope to see Arther starting too. After that it turns into a selection headache for Oneill altogether you've Brady,Wes,McClean,Long,Murphy,Walters all to fill 4 spots I'd love to see Wes starting infront of Murphy (so Long could be introduced when game gets more open) but think Oneill won't start him think Walters Brady McClean and Murphy up top is what MON will go with on the night. Obviously things will change this month and prob injuries hopefully nobody to key to us but it's great not having the injury list we had for Wales hoping to see Horgan get more game time in the 2 friendlies and possibly Austria if he impresses

We're talking about a group who capped Joey Lapira, anything is possible.

    touche!

But, seriously, Doyle has been dragged over for the vast majority of squads and that is even with the likelihood of him playing next to none.

Also, they would still have to pay for flights to and from Canada!

Frustrating that Sheridan and Maguire were left out but doubt either of them would have made it to the final squad for the Austria match anyway. We really need to start blooding through a few new strikers, the Mexico game would have been an ideal time to give them a run out but in fairness both have important club games at the time. Maguire will need to move to England in the next month or two if he has any outside chance of going to the World Cup next summer. When will the next friendlies be? Sept we have the double header with Serbia/Georgia, Oct will be Wales & Moldova, then Nov will be either playoffs or a friendly? Maguire and Sheridan could both be waiting a long time before they are given a chance in the team.

Doyle plays for the Colorado Rapids. I'll have to go over the squads to see what other strikers were fit at the time but I'm sure he's only ever being brought over when others weren't available.

Was also kinda more hoping he was only included because he'll already be that side of the Atlantic and didn't bring him over for the Uruguay game. McGoldrick, Rooney and Doyle to play Mexico and Long, Walters and Murphy to play Uruguay.

We really are screwed upfront, Long is our only decent forward
I guess Walters starts as a lone striker.

Yep, it's dire alright - and Walters is nearly 34.

We seem to have called lots of center backs into recent squads, to take an up close look at them.

Given the shortage of forwards, taking Sheridan and Maguire to Fota (the training camp, not the zoo) and the US wouldn't be the worst idea

The concern is they play in the Irish and Polish leagues, so in training with the rest of the squad you'll see if they're a level below or not

If you would have said three years ago that the Irish player playing at the highest level in the Premier League who was actually getting regular games would be Harry Arter at Bournemouth I would have literally laughed in your face.

Is there anyone promising coming through the ranks these days? I cannot literally think of a single player.

It was always going to happen because of the financial revolution in the Prem, now they can pick and choose from anywhere in the globe and we are a very small fish in that pond.

If you are talking about lads who are 21 and under the first guy that springs to mind is Jack Byrne who there was high hopes for but his loan spell to Blackburn at the start of the season was disastrous and don't know how he's gotten on at Wigan.

Liam Kelly is another midfielder playing at Reading whose had a good season and is a baller.

While they are still very young you've got Barry Coffey, Sean Kennedy and Jordan McEneff who are involved with thd Irish 16s and all play in the midfield area. McEneff switched over from the North at the start of the new year and signed with Arsenal.

Why is Kevin Doyle still involved. He's been absolutely terrible for years now.

Really is an indictment of the underage development of players in ireland that we have so few options up front.

Really is an indictment of the underage development of players in ireland that we have so few options up front.

Doesn't help that we rely on England to develop our players whether that be lads travelling over as kids or picking up players who aren't good enough for England.

I name checked three lads last night who are with the Irish 16s and two of those three lads are off to England soon enough. Jordan McEneff has already signed for Arsenal and Barry Coffey from Nenagh has interest from a number of clubs across the water with Chelsea having him over on trials.

Yesterday United picked up this 16yr old "wonderkid" from Espanyol and you can be sure clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea will pick up talented youngsters from the continent also and we'll probably see these youngsters back in Ireland in four years time playing LOI.

With the introduction of the 15s league and 13s next year it's about time the FAI should be trying to encourage lads to remain in Ireland. While it's hard to try and tell lads not to choose Arsenal over Derry but they should offer scholarships to some of the better players to stay at home and develop here instead of hoping that one kid every few years makes it to a decent level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,559 ✭✭✭✭yabadabado

FAI don't give one **** about developing players they never have and I'd doubt anything will change.
Ship lads over to England and let them sink or swim is there only real plan .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Unfortunately you are right. With the changes that have been made there is a clear pathway for youngsters to join a club at 13s and work his way up to the senior and instead of the FAI trying to entice some of these better youngsters to remain in Ireland when they turn 16/17 they'll be too busy probably patting themselves on the back for changes to league structures or buying a round of drinks for the greatest fans in the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,559 ✭✭✭✭yabadabado

The buying rounds of drink are gone JD keeps a very low profile now compared to a few years ago.The majority of fans know he is a complete **** and have no time whatsoever for him. There are still a few cheerleaders that will always back him but that is only for their own good.
Can't talk ill of a lad if he is looking after your club/tickets.

Towell has been plagued with injuries all season.
He is a very good player when injury free.
Brighton probably recognise that and are prepared to keep him and send him on loan.

Brighton giving Towell an extension is a very odd one. If there's another offer anywhere (unless the money is exceptional) then he'd be better getting as far away as possible from them.

He's probably not on much money at Brighton and if he's resigned for the same terms as his last contract it makes sense cause I doubt he's on much money, they'll send him out on loan and if he impresses they'll probably get a couple of million in transfer fee.

    Only 13 starts.

I'm not sure that starting a third of the games is where he needs to be.

He'd be fine I think he would be able to handle it and Celtic don't wear poppies on their jerseys so he won't stand out in that regard.

As a Celtic supporter I'd like to see him move to Celtic. Patrick Roberts will be returning to Man City. McClean is a different type of wide man, more direct but I think he could flourish under Brendan Rodgers. He has a great attitude to the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Can't see Patrick Roberts getting much of a look in at City and wouldn't be surprised if Celtic could get him on a permanent deal from City this summer.

Also former Cork City player Alan Browne whose playing with Preston at the moment has been called into the senior squad. Find it strange that Greg Cunningham still hasn't received a call up to squads lately.
