Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No wes again. Im happy with results but O Neill reminds me of Traps tactics long ball for walters to knock down only play with ball on ground when its to late

I thought he'd start Hoolihan but maybe he's only fit to come on as a replacement and set up the winner.

We've played Georgia 8 times. We've beat Georgia 8 times.

You'd swear they were our bogey team the way some people go on.

We've crawled over the line against them if you remember the actual performances.

I was under the impression that he was happy to stay at Newcastle and turned down offers from bigger clubs. Similar to Coleman who seems to be prepared to be loyal to Everton. I wish he wouldn't do that and if a bigger club offers him a chance that he takes it. Don't think we'll see him till the end of this year, hopefully he'll make a full recovery.
If one of the Big Clubs had come in with the right money Given would have been outa there and Newcastle would have taken the money . Whether we like it or not Given was not rated high enough by the Top Clubs .

Are we still hoping for a draw in the Wales v Austria game after that.

Are we still hoping for a draw in the Wales v Austria game after that.

Yes because a win for either of them puts them two points behind us, whereas a draw leaves them both four points behind us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 723 ✭✭✭PhilipsR

If Wales win we're in a whole heap of bother. They'll be 2 points behind us and their remaining games are Moldova (a), Georgia (a) and Us at home.

Yes but looking at the remaining fixtures I would like to see Austria win as they have to play Serbia and the Welsh seem to have a handier run in as pointed out above. Im gonna cheer for Austria I think.

Come on Austria we need a huge favor

I'd much rather Austria won and when we play Wales away - hopefully they'll then have nothing to play for.

So frustrating. The best chance Ireland would ever have of topping a group and its tossed away. Along with all the perks such as rankings and future seedings. Very annoying.

    MON managing expectations again.

We dropped points today we shouldn't have. The Group isn't over by a long shot.

In real danger of finishing 3rd if we don't beat Serbia on Tuesday. Also the worst 2nd place doesn't make the play off.

Wales will be ahead of us by Tuesday night unless we beat Serbia.

Its a very disappointing position to be in after the good start.

    Chance after chance wasted.

We now have to beat both Serbia and Wales and obviously Moldova aswell we've made it very difficult as always

We're going to have to get stuck in to the Serbians from the start, high energy and hopefully never let them settle. Whelan has to go. Wes has to come in somewhere. Maybe get Brady back in at left back and give us an option of playing it out from the back?

    Aye.

    Wales will beat Moldova though.

So a draw or loss against Serbia puts them ahead of us.

The prospect of having to win in Cardiff just for a play off place is awful considering what we've wasted.

Bit much to say chance after chance wasted, blessed to not lose to Austria at home and blessed to not lose tonight

It's still in our hands. If we beat Serbia we go top.

Sean Maguire was not even on the bench.

Instead MON opts for 30+ strikers.

I guess the point is we had three games in a row since the Austria win.

    Three very winnable games.

    Haven't won a single one.

And there's a reason we haven't won any of those games, no leadership, no ability and horrendously negative tactics.

Any news on when Hogan will get his first cap?

That result will mean that Austria have nothing to play for against Serbia too. Disaster of a day for Ireland.

Also Wales have easier games left. Serbia 1st and Wales 2nd looks very likely. :(

There's a manager who takes the game by the horns. Double sub wins the game. Fair play to Wales.

  • Registered Users Posts: 528 ✭✭✭Godot.

Hoolahan NEEDS to start against Serbia. We simply can't create chances without him. I'd drop Walters for McGeady too because he offers zero width.

    Randolph
    Christie - Clark - Duffy - Brady
    Arter - Hoolahan - Whelan
    McGeady - Long - McClean

That team has a shot of beating Serbia.

MON does not deem Maguire who scored 20 goals in half a season, worthy even of a place on the bench.
Coleman and the other hand, throws on a 17 year old with 9 senior career appearances in a do or die qualifier, and lo and behold, he grabs the winner...

All Ireland's best results recently have come without Whelan. Sub Meyler in for him and start Walters on the right with McGeady coming on for the last 25 or so as he tends to look more dangerous when he comes on against tired legs.

Yep, it's madness. I can't stand this reluctance of MON to give new players a chance.

Fully agree, but realistically they aren't going to drop him. They named him captain and Keane spent all week bigging him up in the media for 'turning up'.

Ah but you see those 9 appearances weren't on our little island

Is there a more depressing sight watching this team than when Randolph's in possession preparing for yet another aimless hoof, while the rest of the team turn their backs and slowly trundle up-field like lads on death row walking the green mile?

Awful muck tonight. Nobody will miss us at the WC.

True but he now knows he's under pressure from the media and a big result is needed. Bit like against Italy in the Euros, can see him shaking it up

Massive 2 points lossed anything other than a win Tuesday night and it's goodnight Irene. Gutted last 3 games have been so negative.

Would like to see whoever replaces MON be a manager with LOI experience or at least someone who respects the league. Maguire, Horgan, and before McClean etc can be world beaters in Ireland and no call up and yet they fly over and they're national team material all of a sudden.

That's aside from the fact of sitting back against Georgia today of all teams. That's really pathetic stuff. Top of the group with 4 games to go and manage a draw with Georgia. Deary me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

Did Duffy play any pass shorter than a 40 yard hopeful tonight? Before people blame the midfield for 'not showing' for it, there was a moment in the second half where Duffy had the ball at his feet looking up the field with no one within 20 yards of him, he stood on the spot and looked left and right for a pass instead of actually taking the ball somewhat forward, I think in the end he hoofed it forward. Long isn't clever enough to play up front on his own like that anyway, he's never really known how to use his pace in a smart way, instead it's usually just running after balls or running in to the corner for a ball punted there for him.

    .

Well McClean was part of the Northern Ireland youth and then Under 21s when he was at Derry (and when he first started at Sunderland) so you can't bring him into that argument. The moment there was any hint that he may be interested in Ireland, Trap got onto him and a few months later he was in a squad heading to the Euros.
