Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Some good news on the injury front
James McClean trained with the team and that is very positive - he has become more important to the team in the last few games and is a certainty to start
John O'Shea also trained but I doubt if he will start and his days in an Irish shirt are numbered

Is there any concrete indication that Arter will start?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,510 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I'd really hope for O'Shea and Keogh to start.

By far and away our best defenders.

Rest of the team picks itself alright.

What do ye think of this team for tomorrow?
    Randolph
    Coleman Keogh O'Shea(Clark) Brady
    Walters Hendrick Whelan Arter McClean
    Doyle/McGoldrick

O'Shea is done as a starter. He prob should have retired.

Stick Walters up front and Horgan out wide and that would be the team I'd go with.

That is a fairly strong team despite all the news about injuries with the exception of Doyle /McGoldrick - feeling more optimistic about the game tomorrow

  • Draw would be a good result tomorrow

Wanted to put Horgan in but he usually plays on the left so not sure I'd put him on the right. Definitely an option off the bench or if McClean isn't at 100%

I think Arter will start, it will be his first start in a competitive fixture but that's because he's been usually unavailable, not because MON left him out because he was "too conservative". I don't think you could throw Horgan in at the deep end in this game, he might get on for a few minutes towards the end depending on the score.

I was going to post exactly this as well. How many players actually get capped on their first call up? I can't see Martin giving him a proper spell on the pitch for this one.

That said though, on this occasion, I'd love to be wrong! :)

Think giving the other options besides him to play out wide I'd rather be sticking him out there instead of Walters who'd be much more useful up front.

But I agree that he'll more than likely come on for McClean once he and the opposition start to tire.

Do Austria have any injuries or absentees?

Read they are missing their first choice keeper, LB and a CM

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,510 ✭✭✭✭noodler

O'Shea is done as a starter. He prob should have retired.

Well, regardless of your opinion, he and Keogh are the best centre halves we have.

Clark and Duffy in particular are poor on the ball and error prone.

IMO O'Shea makes too many mistakes - I will be surprised if he starts

Yes read they are missing 3 starters

How many of the Irish injured would have started apart from Long?

McCarthy and Ward would almost certainly have started.

I agree so that means both teams are missing 3 regular starters - Ireland have a good chance of getting a result. The last game away to Moldova was their best performance and Austria have not been great. They are the team under pressure to get a result

Austria are missing their first choice goalkeeper Robert Almer, and the backup, Ozcan, is nothing special. Very shaky against Wales in their last game, which was his competitive debut.

Also on the missing list is Watford CB Sebastian Prodl and midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic, both definite starters when they're available.

Christian Fuchs also retired after Euro 2016 leaving them without an obvious left-back. Spurs CB Kevin Wimmer has played there in his absence because he's left-footed, but he's not comfortable there.

We have our own weaknesses and are missing some important players, but this Austria side is weaker than any that we played in the last few years.

That said, they have their danger men - Alaba, Arnautovic, Baumgartlinger, for e.g., - and were extremely efficient in their last qualifying campaign.

But they are under pressure after a horror show at the Euros so there's a good chance.

I'd be happy with a draw away from home, considering our own injuries, and that is what I think will happen. 1-1, we'll go ahead and then concede because we drop too deep. It almost seems like cheating to predict that for a MON side but...

Horgan won't see game time today IMO, too big a risk to throw him in.

Would snap your hand off for a draw right now, think it'll be a tricky evening for us unfortunately

O'Shea is done. Look at Sunderland. He should have retired completely. Clark and Duffy are the future.

I think 3-1 Austria. O'Neills conservatism will be our downfall.

Yep, I'd be very happy with a draw. My prediction: 1-1

O'Shea is still handy, although I would not start him. He'd be a utile sub for the qualifiers.

    I'd take a 0-0 draw right now.

Although I think we can perhaps snatch a win if we are disciplined defensively and hit them with a set piece.

Austria are no great shakes but they are definitely a bogey team for us.

I agree. But Toni Polster isn't playing this time so that should give us a better chance.

Only problem is, had hernia op 2 days ago so can't laugh, cough or sneeze...I think I'll raise a finger and eyebrow if we score...

Alaba is though and he's far better than any player we've had for a long time.

Exactly the team I would have picked. Maybe O'Shea instead of Duffy but happy with it all the same. Bench looks very weak though.

On the contrary, looks like the most offensive Irish team in a while. Brady will have to be a bit disciplined I think though. McClean will cover plenty of ground though on the left side

George Hamilton in dreamland in Vienna

Its a fairly attacking team alright. I more meant that I think a draw would be a great result.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Nothing conservative about that team, plenty of attacking threats and feel a bit more confident about Ireland's chances of winning (that's until they score early and start defending for the rest of the match).

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,784 ✭✭✭KungPao

    Austria 1:2 Ireland.

Shock 2 nil lead for us, then backs to the wall and concede 1.

    I'd take a draw though!
