Leaf is a short commute/city car.

If you plan on doing more than 150km then go with a car that has CCS. For me i rely on Chademo Charging in maybe 10 days in the year for which for me is fine, but it does require planning to check chargers are working and plan on backup locations as well.

Hi anyone on here have to replace a touchscreen?

    it’s my dads 2015 leaf .

was thinking of trying a few car breakers .

it lights up but the touch function is gone .

awkward for functions controlled through the screen.

    thanks very much .

Is everyone's Nissan EV connect app working and updating?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭Sigma101

Mine's working fine (with LEAF gen 1) although I only use it occasionally. I used it this morning to trigger the AC before setting out. Sometimes I have to log out and back in after a longer period of not using it.

Thanks. Mine simply not working for last 10 days.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, logged out etc, but still not updating.

Contacted Nissan Ireland yesterday and have sent them all the data but still no good. Hopefully they will find something else later.

I have my home automation setup updating the state of the car hourly and it was very hit and miss over the past week. But it was working yesterday and day before at least.

My Nissan EV Connect would not connect earlier this week (2021 Leaf 62kwh), tried reinstalling it yesterday, but made no difference.

However, it started working okay last night and is still working okay just now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,589 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Yeah mine just starting working again yesterday.

Not sure if it was anything to do with me contacting them and they sorted it, or it just fixed itself?

Had been off since 18th until 1st.

My 2016 176k km L30 battery continues to lose range at a steady rate. Now can barely do 90km even if I stay under 80kph. However recently a more problematic issue is occurring involving the battery % remaining figure collapsing by up to 50% over a km or 2 when climbing an incline often accompanied by Turtle mode coming on. Once over the incline Turtle mode disappears and the % remaining figure recovers most of the excessive reduction.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if it is an early warning of a complete battery melt down.

I had an issue on my previous Leaf where it lost maybe 5% over 1km or so.

Stopped the car and got out and could smell burning. I drove on and it seemed to run OK again.

Then it happened another day and my mechanic had a look, and it was a siezed brake caliper.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,723 ✭✭✭creedp

Its definitely not brake calipers. I check regularly in the hope that there is a simple cause for the latest unwanted low range benchmark

Could be as simple as a loose connection in the BMS. If you have LeafSpy running when it happens next, you might get more data to use.

    Stay Free

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,723 ✭✭✭creedp

I have leafspy running nearly all the time now as use the kwh remaining figure as my most trusted range remaining figure. Up to about 2 weeks ago this figure was very stable and predictable but recently it drops rapidly in line with % remaining figure on dash and recovers in a similar manner.

Just when I thought battery was completely banjaxed it had a Lazarus type recovery today. 30km return journey this am used 42% of the battery with an almost complete collapse climbing the usual hill, while the exact same journey this pm used only 28% of the battery with no issue climbing the hill. What will tomorrow bring?? Who would think the Leaf could be so exciting to drive😂

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭zzap64

I remember watching a video some time ago where upon hard acceleration the guy's battery percentage would drop a significant amount. Similar as you have to do, to get up a hill. The issue I believe was a very sickly cell or two within the battery. When you look at Leaf Spy can you see a cell or more that is very out of kilter with the rest of them? A large difference in their voltages? Try to look at it when going up the hill or just general fast acceleration.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,723 ✭✭✭creedp

Was watching Leafspy while the battery level was collapsing climbing the hill and at one point it exceeded 600mV but was regularly spiking past 400mV.

This mprnong it briefly went into Turtle mode accelerating ro 60kph out of a junction on a completely flat road and repeated it 5 minutes later accelerating from a roundabout with a slight incline. As I said this happenned for the 1 time only 2 weeks. Prior to that the battery level would reduce under load but recover without entering turtle mode.

I agree its likely a weak cell and intermittently when parking up with low battery % remaining Leafspy would report weak cells but for the most part it reports all cells ok

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,119 ✭✭✭✭KCross

It will likely get worse so I'd say you will be looking at a module(or two) replacement to get it to stabilise as the entire battery is only as "strong" as the weakest cell. One cell will bring the whole pack down when its voltage drops at the low end. From your earlier posts there are multiple out of balance cells so I'd say your issue is more than one cell.

You have already reported it to Nissan within the warranty period and mileage, so you have a valid claim, you need to press hard on them to fix it and threaten legal when they say no. Dont accept no.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,723 ✭✭✭creedp

Im actively looking to replace the car with a 'real car' that has a decent range, can be driven at legal speed limit with heating on without imploding the battery😂

However I was hoping to keep the Leaf on road for a while for young lads to learn in but, as you say, its only going to deteriorate to the point its unusable even for short journeys. 2 local Nissan dealers washing their hands of it pleading no expertise, training or equipment to work on EVs and advising me to go Nissan Windsor as they are the battery repair / diagnostic specialists in the country. I somehow think threatening legal action is the only way Ill get any kind of hearing but even then Id be thinking the car will be long gone to car heaven before anything will actually happen

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Definitely sounds like it’s time for a well worded solicitors letter to Nissan Ireland if you think you have a valid warranty claim.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,119 ✭✭✭✭KCross

Im actively looking to replace the car

As is, its not much of a buy for an unsuspecting member of the public who will definitely have no come back as its out of warranty now for them but within warranty for you.

I'd be pushing the warranty claim and its still a perfectly good car if you get those cells replaced... or trading it into a Nissan dealer for them to deal with.

Dont worry Im not going to off load this problem onto any unsuspecting person. I intend holding onto it and getting it sorted for use as a cheap runaround. I just dont want to have to depend on it as my car any longer. Ive served my time and overpaid my debt to society at this stage😁

Late in the party here but our 2016 L30 was behaving oddly last winter when the battery was cold and it hit a kind of turtle light mode where it had a very low performance with the battery at perhaps 15% indicated and I think the car only allowed us to use 4 or 5 power bubbles worth of powah. Anything similar didn't happen again until during the last weeks cold spell where 2x power bubbles disappeared when driving from cold with quite a low SOC but this time there was no turtle.

The early 30 kWh pack is not Nissan's finest hour it seems and the range is very noticably lower when the temperatures creep towards 0. In general, if the battery can't output the maximum power without voltage of the worst cells collapsing, it makes sense for the BMS to limit the output instead of just shutting down and leaving you fully stranded.

Please do fight with Nissan for the battery warranty. We have still 55k km/4 months left until the end of the warranty. I don't think we get to use it though as our SOH is about 76% with "only" two capacity bars lost.

Edit: And I really do like the mk1 leaf as the local runaround/dog transport to the mountains and the fact that it's a bit quirky and generally unloved by the public hits the right buttons. As there are loads of L40 in Ireland I'm thinking that eventually I'll just splash out for a 40 pack from a crashed car to keep this L30 on the road in the long term.

Wasa looking to pull the trigger on a Nissan Leaf 192 SVE spec, leather seats etc. It will be mainly used by the wife for a 25km daily commute. Not to concerned about the range as we have another car for long journeys. It will be our 1st EV. What has me concerned is the Chademo type charger on it. Is this a deal breaker? Looks like the cars resale value, say in 3-4 years could be badly affected if there are no Chademo chargers anywhere. Thoughts?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,119 ✭✭✭✭KCross

There will still be Chademo chargers, just not as many.

You are already buying a 4yr old Leaf so it has alot of its depreciation already done (50%+), so as long as you dont overpay for it you should be OK. Bargain hard and use Chademo as a bargaining tool.

As you said yourself you wont be using Chademo much, if at all, so it doesn't affect you as long as you get it at the right price to begin with.

If it’s cheap enough it doesn’t matter. If you can buy something like an equivalent Ioniq or eGolf for similar money though, I’d suggest you leave that Leaf where you found it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 252 ✭✭PureBred

    Lookin at €16k for a 182 (60km on clock) or €16.5k for a 192 (45km on clock).

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭joe1303l

You’ll find a 2018 Ioniq or eGolf for that money. They’ll probably have less spec or more miles than the Leaf examples you’ve mentioned. There is a reason why used Leafs often have low mileage. Watch some Tesla Bjorn reviews on YT. You’ll see the advantages of the likes of a used Ioniq.

  • Registered Users Posts: 252 ✭✭PureBred

Why would they have lower mileage out of interest?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,758 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

You're not far off early ID3 prices there, they've dropped to 20k for a 2020 model although there'll be more mileage for that money. I'd suggest it may be a cheaper buy overall if you're talking about changing in 3 to 4 years

Or the Ioniq or golf already mentioned
