EVs are bringing a new audience to lots of new terminology.
Better to teach correctly from the start the difference between kW, kW/h, amps, volts, current and so on, than learning incorrectly from the get go.

So be careful yourself - where would you use kW/h ?

It's always good to accept constructive criticism
In the SI it's kW.H so I wrote kW/h. Apparently that is incorrect and it is kWh.

Again, be sure what you're posting... In SI the unit of energy is J. ;)

And while we are on units... kW/100km is equally nonsense as kWh/h, while I have seen all the posters here using it, @BoatMad included.

Sadly I don't have a piece of paper to calculate it's dimension and equivalent in SI...

SI defines base AND derived units

J is the base unit , kWH is a derived unit if energy , better expressed as " work done " at constant energy over 1 hour

Could we have a poll to gauge numbers of who gives a shlt?

or a poll that says that those that dont care should read another thread

Hour is not SI. The same way a mile, yard, year or quart are not, although linear conversion between them and SI units exists.

This is a thread about the Nissan Leaf.

Maybe we could have a thread about terminology? I could stay out of that one.

Another Leaf question just popped into the old grey matter (excuse me if its silly).

Is it possible to add a 6.6 charger to a 3.3KW car afterwards?

No it's not, 6.6KW must be fitted from factory.

Yes. It's a bolt on mod. The trouble is finding a 6.6 OBC.

    Where did you hear this?
From what I'm told, there's no coding or updates even require. Just plug and play.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,325 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

I've always been told that it cannot be added afterwards.

It was just a question that came to me, and of course you might eventually start to see Leafs in breakers yards, so if there was a possibility of getting a 6.6 charger and having it added to your 3.3 car.

Its been discussed on here before. By all accounts, its a non-runner. If you are after a 6.6, you'll get a 6.6 - you just have to have patience and do the ground-work (and a lot of the time, that means tracking down all options and asking the seller directly if it's 6.6 or not. Many of them either dont even know - dealer or private - or forget to advertise the fact).

It can be done but two big gotchas....

    - Finding a Leaf in a breakers yard is difficult, finding a 6.6kW version is extremely difficult
    - Finding someone who is willing to do the work is probably even more difficult.

Its not like your backstreet mechanic swapping out an alternator. There is high voltage to be dealt with so its a specialist job. I doubt a main dealer would do it and if they did, it would be with new parts and would be a ridiculous price so the summary is it can be done but the chance of getting it done is very very slim for now.

I'd also say it would be more economical to just buy a 6.6kW Leaf and hopefully as we move forward 6.6kW will be the norm (like the Ioniq).

    Another couple of questions:

    1) re: sound system.

Is the Bose one in the Tekna/SVE much better in quality than that in the Acenta/SV?

    2) Differences in Tekna v Acenta.
Tell me am I missing any. I think the Tekna has, over and above the TAcenta, the following:
    Leather seats
    Heated seats
    Heated steering wheel
    Bose audio
    All round camera
    Bigger and nicer alloys

It's better, but with a caveat. Over bluetooth it's pretty ****e. Use a USB drive and it's very good.

    Leather seats - YES
Heated seats - YES, but it's an option (Cold Pack) on non SVE
Heated steering wheel - same as above
    Bose audio - YES
    All round camera - YES
    Bigger and nicer alloys- YES

For me it was the heated seats and wheel, and the 360 camera that sold me on the Tekna.

Now that my wife has experienced 360 parking cameras, I'm doomed to never be allowed buy a car without them in future.

Yes to all the above and add LED lights.
I think the Tekna/SVE also has tinted rear windows and electric folding mirrors which the Acenta/SV doesn't have... could be wrong on that but I do know my Tekna has it.

I own a Tekna and Acenta. I can't say I've tested the audio too much though. What I love the most about Tekna, is the 360 view camera. Not that I have ever had a problem parking, but when reverse parking into a supermarket spot, you can can bang on between the lines and right to the kerb/pole/wall with no effort. When driving straight into the driveway, I tap the camera button and the front camera displays so I can get within a couple of mill of the other car without worrying I might make contact. It makes the manouvres much easier.

And of course, I think it looks a lot nicer. I was parked beside a grey acenta yesterday. Both cars were identical on the exterior.....chrome pack and all. But the 17" rims just blew the other car away.

Depends what your priorities are I guess. For me, I don't like alloys bigger than 16" because of ride quality, the extra meat in the 16" soaks up Irish roads better imho. That and the 17" tyres are a good bit more expensive. I wouldn't say no to the 360 camera though - very cool!

And you can press the button one more time and it shows you the front left wheel (as the camera is built into the side mirror) so you can park right up against a kerb without scratching the alloy!

Just to clarify though.... you added them yourself? The Accent doesn't have LED's from the factory.

Buy a Tekna. You'll have your 360 camera and I will swap the wheels with my acenta for you ;)

The acenta does have a notciceable difference, where the ride is softer, but the Tekna feels much sportier because it's firmer. I like them equally.....just the price difference in tyres is crappy.

in my case, I use it to get close the wall and right uo to the CP.

Someone else added them, but I would have done so anyway.

Note though, the folding mirrors are button operated rather than automatic when you turn the car off.

You can get a kit to make them do it automatically I believe but it's a few hundred quid.
