RIP Roddy! A true icon in a business full of stars. Without Piper there was no Hogan, no Wrestlemania and no WWE

I hope people enjoy this long interview with Roddy as much as I enjoyed asking the wide-ranging questions. Re-published from Issue 84/85 of Fighting Spirit Magazine:

Definitely one of the most well remembered professional wrestlers from his heyday with the Hogan. Wasn't as big a fan in his later years but loved (hated) him as a kid and he's one of the best ever bad guys.

What a downer. Heard the news late last night annd couldn't believe it.

When I was a kid he was THE heel that I wanted to see beaten. He was just so good on the mic.

This year has been very tough with Legends passing away

A great pic here that is a good way to remember 2 of them

RIP very young to go, he even had a good movie in "they live" when it first came out. Sad to see an era of memories dying.

    Really sad news.

He was just so perfect as the arrogant, asshole, love to hate him heel.

Fantastic on the mic, he had the giant grapefruits swagger down to a tee long before Vince starting doing it, he was just a brilliant performer all round.

Really sad to hear this. He was one of my favourite wrestlers growing up, I have a big box of hasbro wrestlers at home. The belt was always left on Roddy Piper.

    RIP

The Pipers Pit episodes leading up to WMIII are some of my earliest wrestle memories. He was ever present at the big stories like when Andre turned bad and attacked Hogan. One of the most entertaining guys it the business.

RIP. Definitely one of the best ever.

It's amazing how much it really is a downer as a wrestling fan when you hear of a passing. I guess it's what you're into. If I generally hear of a "celebrity" dying it doesn't really affect me. But with the wrestlers it's almost like a part of my childhood dying.

I really hope we are nearing the stage where we will start meeting wrestling death with genuine surprise, as said elsewhere Pipers generation were pretty unregulated and todays hopefully will not pass on so young. That said Pipers was an actual real surprise and the was of natural causes and thankfully sounds like it was a peaceful passing too.

Piper was one of the finest at his trade. Rhonda Rousey using his moniker is fitting as she is a real game changer in her sport just like he was. I'd argue nobody (or at least a very select group of people) could get the same reaction from a crowd that the hotrod could. In many ways he was the reason that Hulk Hogan was such a huge star because you can't have a mega babyface star without the heel everyone wants nay needs to see him beat and that man was Piper.

Like with Dusty, the man had such a career and gave so many awesome promos that you just know the tribute video on Raw this week will truely be epic.... I just wish they didn't have to make it, not for many many years at all. :(

His son has shown an interest in pro wrestling iirc with a few matches (and an MMA one I think) and some training, I wonder if any of his auld mans charisma rubbed off on him and we might see a hotrod Jnr in the future.

Pretty much the feud that made me a fan. Their match at WM8 is fantastic too, one of Piper's best. He almost NEVER did clean jobs so it was a huge deal for Bret to get the win like he did.

Watches the Cena promo on the go home to Survivor Series a few years back. Brilliant stuff.

    Rip

So ric flair (must be in tremendous shape) and hogan (dead to wwe) are the only big 80's wrestlers still alive. Vince will live to be 100 because he's a freak for his age the way he's built

Not much honouring from Nikki Bella there.

    think that was Emma there.

the crowd was worse though, some of them didn't have the decency to stay quiet.

Emma was bad with the eye rolling or whatever she was doing but Nikki was posing with the bloody divas belt and fidgeting with her hair and stuff. I think she was the only one holding a title there and certainly the only one posing as if if at ringside.

I don't know if she was trying to get heat or what but i don't think that was the time or place for it.

Wow, I'm furious just reading that. No tact or concern for your thoughts on it, just blurt out ***** and dismiss the legend and industry you love. The point is relatively valid but the condescending tone must've been horrific. A saint you are!
