Love watching this, missus can't stand it mind you.. It's always a bonus when the year you were born gets shown and better again if something happened on the day you were born...

Anything significant happen the day you were born? Mine is on it! It's quite an infamous one!

God I love that programme - sadly enough, I got the DVDs of the 70's & 80's but they dont show half as much as the tv episodes - I think it has something to do with licensing unfortunately.

If anything should be axed from RTE it should be Fair City.

If anything should be axed from RTE it should be Fair City.

To be fair to RTE, it costs peanuts to make and is likely one of their highest rated shows. It's complete **** but it'd be stupid to get rid.

Lack of archives is the problem, unless you want ones based on Pathe News or the Evening Press & Herald.

The earliest archives possible from RTE are December 31 1962 (Date of first broadcast). The 60s era was rumoured to be released some time around November 2014, but I'm not sure it ever made it.

In the back of my head I think I've seen the 60s version, but I'm not 100% sure. The RTE page hasn't been updated to include it.

They did have a special version entitled "A Week Of Welcomes" to commemorate the visits of President Obama & Queen Elizabeth in 2011 (that long already), who judging by the cover, were together the whole time

It's done in the same style but isn't an official "Reeling" title.

EDIT: Just checked KAT & the season 1962-1969 is there

    Any reason why?

And a lot of people like it. Me I like it for the comedy factor :)

They could easily make a new one for each year. Plenty more stories to show.

    Its not a bad show.

It gives a good insight into what was going on in the old days

Not sure if the OP is aware, but something just being on TV, there's not an obligation to watch it.

A lot of the early 60s stuff seemed to be from the Gael-Linn archives, the All-Irelands in colour were. If RTE kept recordings of them at all (did they even televise them at all in those days?) they would have been B/W.

Lots of stuff in the 60s went out live and wasn't recorded, and lots of recordings from the 60s and 70s were wiped (by most broadcasters, not just RTE) - lots of Wanderly Wagon was wiped!

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Reeling in the years starts from 1962 because RTE doesn't have any archives from before that year they said, the channel was only launched in 1962 I believe.this is why they don't go further back in time with the program.

31/12/1961 much of the early 1960s comes from gealinn and ifi archives they could us them for 1960 and 1961.

    It is repeated too much.

I think the viewing figures will outweigh your thoughtful critique.

    "Because its sh1te." That's deep.

Being not a native Irish person, I actually love it to get a good glimpse of past Irish history and culture.

Newmug take a warning. This isn't After Hours and we expect more reasoned argument here.

I think Reeling in the Years is a well made programme and I enjoy it. I think people get a bit frustrated because it's usually shown too often as filler when Rte news is done to skeleton service every august. It should be scheduled more imaginatively but I will leave that up to the experts in RTE

If anything its too short they could easily make monthly episodes

    1986 October etc

Or even remake the episodes to show other events that are more relevant to now. I'm sure they must have enough material to show and is worth showing. Some of the scandals are only now coming to light.

Great point. My kids love it too - an excellent way to learn history .
