With the new school proposed to open down at Charlesland, surely the time has now come to consider installing a pedestrian crossing system at Farrankelly roundabout, so as to facilitate a safe crossing for Eden Gate and Eden Wood residents as well as joggers/cyclists heading up and down the Farrankelly and Killincarrig/Kilcoole Roads. Currently, there is one pedestrian crossing about 150m along the Killincarrig Road which is hardly practical to use and which is of no use to anyone in Eden Wood.

At the same time, a separate set of traffic/pedestrian lights could be installed outbound at Eden Gate to solve the right-turn issue and to allow safe access between Eden Gate and Eden Wood. If necessary to avoid it becoming a rat run, access to Priory Road towards Delgany could be restricted.

    Advantages:

    * it would enable parents and their kids to walk/cycle to school more safely,
    * it would stop teens and younger kids risking their lives running across the road from Eden Wood to Eden Gate and vice versa, jumping over the central reservation, as seems to happen most evenings,
    * it could help to slow traffic down approaching the roundabout and beyond, especially down towards the new school; and
    * it could inhibit those idiot motorcyclists who turn Farrankelly Road into a racetrack on Sunday nights.

    Disadvantages:

    * it could clog up a little at school rush-hours, albeit only for a short period,
    * not sure serious road cyclists would be impressed.

As a father to two young children who are likely to have to cross these roads in years to come, it doesn't seem too much to ask for a safe pedestrian crossing system, particularly if (as seems likely) development and traffic is likely to increase on this side of town.

    Anyone have any thoughts/alternative suggestions?
