No no no no no no no. Spending 10k on a private sale is stupid in my book.

You're going to limit yourself to some serious buckets of shíte over your lifetime if you stick to that rule forever.

MM's 6 MPS and 335i were both private sales (by him, obvs) and I doubt there was cleaner examples of either car in the country.

The only way to avoid getting a real lemon is do your homework and know what you should be looking out for when inspecting the car. Buying from a dealer doesn't mean you're not getting a crap car.

Have you done a motorcheck on it?

To be honest; I'm not entirely sure I know when a Motorcheck becomes a sensible thing to do.

I've never used it before, because all my cars were over 10 years old and the only thing Motorcheck seemed viable for was finding out if there was finance owed on a car.

This is obviously a lot newer than previous cars, but old enough that I don't think it would still be under it's finance lifespan.

Other than that, I'm not 100% sure what I could learn from a Motorcheck. If the car was previously crashed, for example, then I'm confident a mechanic would pick up on that fairly swiftly, from his inspection?

Look people differ, not everyone is in the same boat with regards to how they buy. I just find that spending all that amount of money with absolutely no come back is a step too far. Believe me, I'm well aware that dealers can sell crap too, and one has to be able to tell that before any sale goes through.
I know that you can get more bang for your buck privately, but I'd rather play it safe ;):)

Eh use a motorcheck to confirm what the seller has claimed at least in terms of mileage nct etc

    Same for finance

If it's been written off thy will be there, it costs about 15 euro

I broke my personnel record today for most amount of flashes of hazards under Hard brakeing my record was too flashes as you know it only flashes under very hard deceleration ie standing on the brakes. Today I got 8 flashes  which was basically going from 100kmh to stop as quickly as I could. Great car to stop infairness.

Well I've €25 in my bank account at the moment, and a full check is €35, so I'll see how I feel if I throw a few Euro in on Monday (or I'll google about, but doubt they'd have any coupons/vouchers for a full check for 25 and I wouldnt be fussed with doing one of the 'smaller' checks.

I'd buy privately off a specialised forum where the car can be seen as a pride and joy for years, as MM's was.
I wouldn't buy an unknown car at that value level.

It's in my head now! :(

Does anyone know of any discount codes of 20%+ off motorcheck? I have a 20% off i found, but it only reduces the price to €28. I've only €25 in my bank account. Anyone here ever bought a bundle of 3 checks and have one unused or work in the trade and get a discount that I can use to get a check for €25 (or if you've got one left over from a purchase of 3 checks and want to give it to me, I'll Paypal you the €25?).

    No harm trying!

I use the Credit Union for everything so rarely have anything in my bank account.

Do a cheaper basic check and then decide if you need the full check?

No offence, but if you're not willing to spend the money to check a car, why are you spending so much?

Both my Honda and the Ohs new merc were motor checked, details checked against the nct website etc.

Put it in before you see the car Monday and do the check?

Do they not flash at a much faster rate than normal hazard light operation?
Maybe not but I thought they did.

I only found out the other day that the C5 does it too. Well, the old one, I knew the new one did.

It's a very safe car to stop quickly. Small rattle through the ABS but it's very planted.

Well that's the only thing that's showing up as being out of place, really.

The mileage listed at the top (70000 miles) is the mileage listed in the advert on DoneDeal.

Not sure where 'UK Trade' is supposed to be (main dealer, when the car was serviced, etc?) but if the numbers there are right, then at the moment it should be on about 275km?

Very high.. (especially for a 2011?! )

Also, can anyone explain to me (maybe I'm missing something obvious?!)

How can the car get to 200km in the UK, with no UK owners?

I wouldn't get too bogged down on that detail tbh. I'd be too busy walking away.

[broken record]You're very unlikely to get a cheap high spec genuine diesel car. The cheap ones are usually cheap for a reason [/broken record]

At €10k KKV, forget that car.
You'll find the right one but that ain't it!

Pretty annoyed about that. Had finally settled on a feckin' car! :( Condition of that private one is immaculate, though. Was really enjoying the thoughts of picking it up. Pricks.

Anyone got any opinion on this?

Info says "sat nav" so i presume its the same spec level. Would it be the same exact car in general (no interior photos? ).

I presume this is effectively the C5 in a different skin? Gonna take a look at the above C5 and this 508 tomorrow.

Ah I actually can't wait to see how it drives on the motorway compared to the Yaris. The Yaris was quite twitchy and the steering was super sensitive like on a gokart at high speeds.

Quite a lot of body roll on back roads too at a high speed :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,964 ✭✭✭Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime

    @KKV

both of those cars are UK imports. The first from the dealer is around kylemore dublin and i wouldn't trust dealers around there to feed a dog, never mind sell me a car.

The second one - a car that new shouldn't have a CAT anything unless it was really serious.

But i do think the C5 and 508 are great cars, would get one myself if i was looking. Just getting a decent one might be the trick.

    Just my 2cents.

Ah it's a great feeling waiting to collect a new car. It will be a huge leap forward to for you I've been in Yaris and although they are a great little car they feel very light on the road. The focus will feel much more planted on the road and very smooth at motorway feel. Infairness the mk2 focus were always a great car for handling I remember that from my own one you couldn't take that away from it.

Well I've no geographical knowledge of Dublin, so I'd no idea where it was. Whats the story with Kylemore though? Why is that always mentioned as a spot for shady dealers and such?

I did a google of the name of the dealer selling that car (Gary Coby Motors) but nothing really came up (except one fairly unreasonable complaint from Boards in 2013, but if that's the only negativity online i figured they'd be alright (before you posted).

Pretty much everything I end up looking at is a UK Import, so that doesn't surprise (or bother) me at all. I like UK imports as they generally have a slightly higher spec.

I don't know what a Cat D is, to be honest. I was always under the impression that Cat A is severe damage (car was in a pile up, exploded and then rolled into a ditch kinda damage, with nothing recoverable) and then D was someone did something trivial to it, but it devalued the car so much that wasn't economical to repair? (but then again, im not as clued in as most here).

I really, really enjoyed my time inside the C5s i drove though. Definitely interested in picking one of them up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

How long does it take to type Cat D into google?
A Cat D vehicle will have suffered damage in the past, probably in an accident. The insurance company that handled the claim decided that repairing the vehicle would have cost more than replacing it. Insurers often sell Cat D vehicles on for salvage. Many are safely repaired and returned to the road.
A 'Cat D' car is a car that would cost less to repair than the value of the car, but the repair cost was still deemed excessive by the insurer, while a 'Cat C' car was damaged to a point where the repairs would have cost more than the value of the car. Insurers tend to value cars on the lower end of their market price, in order to make as much money as they can when selling on the car - so sometimes the damage to write off a car can be very minor.

There is something off about that one too me. No matter what way you look at it it was a rental car for the start of its life so sh!t driven out of it then it was in some kind of a crash as chances are it probably wasn't stolen. Is 80k km not kind of low too for a high spec larger size estate car like that most would be bought to put up miles not for just tipping around in.

I tell you one thing people often under estimate how hard it is to find a straight clean second hand car I know that myself from experience.

If you're looking at UK imports, why not go to the UK and buy it over there? Much less likely to have been clocked on the way over. More choice too, they tend to buy much more estates than Irish people.

Wouldn't know where to start, to be honest. Is it simply a case of buying it and ferrying it back and VRTing it?

I'd be fearful of, like today, seeing a car online, thinking "that'll do" and then travelling over to see it is actually in tatters when viewed in person.

I'm sure there are workarounds of this, but I'm not clued in enough. With the GBP V EUR at the moment not being great is it still worth doing?

Also, where would you look? (both in terms of websites and in terms of whereabouts within the UK is practical for getting in and out with a car? I believe UK sites ask for a postcode to help narrow results?).

I wouldn't be dead set against it if I could get a decent car (C5?) in my budget.

    EDIT: Found this:

    http://www.motorcheck.ie/blog/buying-car-uk-where-start/

Looking now but will head to bed shortly. Might turn into a real thing though! (buying in the UK)

Autotrader.co.uk would be the most common.

They might prompt a postcode, but that's only used so they can give you an indication of how far away the car is from you. Just google "sample uk postcode", pop that in, and browse away

He's been there a while now at conygham road.

Not a bad guy to deal with at all. Chatted with him a few times. He's happy to admit his cars are UK imports mostly.

He took over from the two brothers from sarsfield and rents that lot of them but he hates the sarsfield boys so i agree with him.

He can do a good deal and seems to have a regular customer base. Hes there a few years now just can't remember exactly how long. But he does seem to be able to move cars quick.

1 man job with a few cleaning lads working for him.

In saying all that i never bought from himself so can't say too much really

Motor company I think, basically once was a petrol station, with the canopy remaining, cars jammed in around it.

On another note, I won a 20 euro voucher for a valet.

Ya that must be him so. I was trying to remember all the dealers as I passed by them, that's the only one I could remember, only came to me now strangely.

I think it was a bit further out that road that there was a plethora of ramps, fair annoying altogether.

Had a painful morning of suit shopping this morning. Got sorted after anyway damn interviews and there suits hopefully get a good bit of wear out of it for graduation etc.

Fuel Light is almost on in the megane after a lot of unexpected driving yesterday so need to fill that today it's going to be an expensive week :(

Filled the car this week with Esso instead of my usual Maxol as it was at 136.9 when I got it. What a load of crap it is. Usually get about 160/170 miles by the time I reach half a tank, this time on Esso fuel I'm only getting about 120 and that's with the same driving/style. Definitely going to stick with Maxol/Topaz.
