My last day will be the 18th of March (just taking the required two weeks before due date) - glad I have the date to look forward to as work is going to be crrrraaazy busy for the next month or two.

I'm a first timer so I'm looking forward to mat leave, but the excitement is being overshadowed slightly by the nerves and not knowing what to expect when my little one arrives!

I went two weeks early on both of mine so I won't push it to the last two weeks! I'm thinking I'll take mine at the end of February! Just had an appointment today and baby is looking good! Back in next week for fetal assesment! Then back in with my consultant on 4th of Feb! You know its getting close when the appointments take over your life lol

I wouldn't worry about your nerves! If mine and most ppl I know experience is anything to go by , the last few weeks the nerves go and your just desperate to have the baby and have it over you!

Congrats on your positive appointment :)
I know what you mean, it's hard to judge when to start mat leave. Hoping my little one doesn't come any earlier than two weeks!

Sometimes I wish she was here right now and other times I'm glad of the few months left to prepare, seems like there's so much to do before she arrives! I did however cave and buy some adorable baby clothes in the sales :P looking at the little boots and mittens and can't believe she'll be that small!

Trust me when I say you don't need half the stuff you think you need! Its very easyto get swept up in the shopping though lol and its the fun part so why not!

Emmadilema I feel as big as a house here! Last pregnancy I put on 35lbs and this time I'd say it will be more like 40 and I'm only 5'1! Plus I hadn't lost the last couple of pounds from my last pregnancy. Oh dear!

I'm taking the 2 weeks off before baby but I carried over 5 days from 2015 so I'll take that the week before my mat leave starts.

Is it just me that's in no rush to finish up work? Last time I moved my date forward by two weeks, and thank god I did as I went 11 days over. So I was still sitting at home for three weeks before baba came.

this time I'm not having as easy a time of it, so it depends on how I'm feeling but I'm still thinking that I'm likely to go over so will move my date forward by a week anyways.. I'd hate to have to much time used up before baba comes?

Mac I'd love to do this as I have that extra week off anyway, but how do you go about it? Did your doctor just sign off on your form?

I throw up every day so I'm happy to go early if I have to! My Dr signed me off at about 32 weeks on both pregnancies! On my daughter I was threatening early labour and was admitted for steroid injections at 32 weeks! Great thing about being signed off is that it didn't eat into my mat leave time and it was still taken 2 weeks before due date! If I remember right I had her the day I was due to finish up

Late March here - work itself is fine (I'm a software developer so have a very sedentary job) but it's the commute that's the problem because I get a very busy tube line at peak time so I'm shifting my hours to start and finish earlier for my last eight weeks at work. Have a ton of annual leave to burn so am finishing at 36+5 at the end of February then officially starting maternity leave the day after my due date.

Yes, when I brought the form in to the Doctor for her to sign her bit, I explained I wanted to delay it for two weeks and she said no bother. I had a very healthy first pregnancy and no commute and I sit down all day so there was no reason not to. Just ask the Doc. there shouldn't be an issue.

I don't work at the minute so basically on maternity!
Can I ask how you all sleep at night, I have a long full body pillow but it's not doing a whole lot for comfort at the minute.

Also, if anyone else wants to join the Facebook group,pm me. There's 5 of us now!

    Hi Ladies,
I'm new to forums, Im 26 weeks With my first baby and I've been lurking instead of chatting, so here goes!
Javagal, I'm not finding I'm too uncomfortable in bed at the moment, but the reflux is a bloody killer and has prevented me even lying down properly this last couple of nights.Nothing seems to help much.....anyone having this problem?Any tips?

  • Registered Users Posts: 774 ✭✭✭FurBabyMomma

Thanks Mac, I'll see if she can adjust it a week, fingers crossed.

I'm still suffering from insomnia so I'm afraid I'm no help on the sleep front!

  • Registered Users Posts: 479 ✭✭Mac0783

I'm not physically uncomfortable at night but having the weirdest most vivid dreams and a bit of insomnia to, I'm so tired this morning, I think I could fall asleep at my desk if I'm not careful.

I've never had reflux, is that like heartburn but worse? I suffer from heartburn and take rennies and gavisicon if it gets really bad, can you take anything for the reflux penny? When are you due penny and what hospital you going to?

I'm due april 20th in Mullingar.

I find ice pops good for reflux ! I don't know if it's all in my head or they are actually helping lol the fruit pastille ones are good but you could also make your own ones with blended fruit and pineapple juice yum yum I find the pineapple isn't as acidy as other fruit juices! The innocent juices are nice and smooth too!

Hi Mac, the reflux is like acid rising up your throat...I mostly get it at night but can happen during the day. It's mostly uncomfortable rather than painful, sitting upright trying to sleep is no fun!Gaviscon helps but not completely.
I'm from Sligo and due April 10th.
Thanks for the tip, Emma, I'll try that....anything that tastes good has my vote!

Mine kicks in every night whether I'm lying or not! I'm like a zombie wandering round looking through presses trying to find something that might soothe it mmmm brains lol

Penny, Emma that sounds awful rough, I don't have that, god love ye. have you googled it? any old wives tales that can help?

Penny a load of friends of mine had babies in sligo, it's a great hospital. If I could have all convinced my hubbie that we should go there instead of Mullingar I totes would have. but unfortunately we're to far away.

Hope you all got some sleep last night, I had a decent nights sleep! first one in ages. But I went to the gym yesterday to do a weights class and even though I took it very easy my thighs are screaming at me today

I have heartburn most nights too. I find not eating/drinking after 7 helps and definitely cutting out bread helps too. My leg is in bits today with pain so I'm off to the docs as I'm terrified of getting a clot. I can see the poor veins pulsating :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 17 Pennypie

Oh no!,How did you get on at the docs! yellow Hen?

So apparently it's just something I'll have to deal with. If the pain gets very bad, go into the coombe. My own GP wasn't there yest and it was a middle-aged foreign male doctor who was clearly very unsympathetic to my plight! He was very nice though and maybe it is just something i'll have to get used to. I have a support stocking on all the time now and I elevate it as much as possible so hoping that offers some relief.

Hey Ladies, how is everyone this week?I know it's super early but I'm starting to gather a few bits for my labour and hospital bag.Ive downloaded the eumom check list, but for all you more experienced girls, is there anything you would recommend? Also wondering about maternity pads....which ones should I buy?Its all a little overwhelming!

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,030 ✭✭✭yellow hen

You're dead right to get your bits together when you feel like doing it. I actually can't remember what I need so I'll need to consult a checklist too! I don't really remember what sort of pads I had but j imagine they all do the same job. The only vital thing I'm bringing this time is lanolin nipple cream and soothing pads. If yuh intend on breastfeeding, I thought they were amazing at dealing with the pain proactively. Going to visits parents next weekend so u intend on touting our all the old newborn clothes. Can't wait :)

Hey everyone, I'm 30 weeks plus 2 days now...can't believe the countdown is into single figures now!

Quick one on antenatal classes - where/when are you guys doing yours? I was meant to be attending the community midwives (who I was told would organise my antenatal classes) but have since been diagnosed with gestational diabetes so have had to switch to hospital visits instead - think the classes have fallen between the cracks! To be honest I really just want to go to the breastfeeding one. I'm a first timer and am really keen to give it the best go that I can so want all the info possible!

I'd definitely go to the breastfeeding class if you can. I wish I'd found out more before giving birth, bf can be difficult in the first week. Also in case no-one mentions it , it's very common for babies to 'cluster feed' on night 2 - mine would not get off me for 10 hours straight! It was a tough start but actually brought in my milk. She only self-weaned there when I was 6 months pregnant. Good luck!

God I remember that second night too..... I cried with exhaustion and delerium! Stuff that the bfeeding clinics prob won't tell you.... Be assertive with the bfeeding. If it's not going well which it doesn't for so many, pester the midwives to get the lactation nurse in to visit you. They are excellent (if not a little brusque) but it can make the world of difference. Personally, I didn't find the bfeeding class any good... They passed around a doll and described it. It's impossible to understand until youre in that moment trying to latch your newborn on.

I'm going to pump my yoga ball tomorrow and get bouncing again. 11.5 weeks to go....I'm on countdown now :)

Thanks so much for the advice guys :) I see you can have consultations with lactation specialists before birth, do you think that would be better than the normal breast feeding classes? I seem to be working myself up over this for some reason :S I really want to get it to work!
