    Let me explain.

Murphy apparently paid Water charges when he was living in Brussels as an MEP.

Now, I have never heard Murphy campaign that water should be free, only that we 'already pay for it'.

Now, so far as I know, the Belgians never had an increase in vat, nor in motor tax to help fund water charges, in fact, I think I read somewhere, that the opposite to that happened when the Belgians decided to charge for water directly.

Now, what that has to do with Ireland's predicament, considering even our 'ringfenced lpt' got siphoned off to fund this shambles, along with a large portion of the motor tax take, and from general taxation, I do not see anything in Murphy's attitude here, and there. Two different models

I would also like to point out that in Antwerp, I can buy a bottle of Duvel, high quality, high strength Belgian beer for €2.45.

I can buy the same bottle in a well known craft beer pub in Dublin for €8.30.

I believe the tax man gets the majority of our different price.

(Since we've resorted to barrel scraping)

What is it about water freeloaders and referring to the cost of living in units of beer?

What has your alcohol bill got to do with anything?

You don't want to pay for water because you have beer to buy? You want the taxman to pay for water from your alcohol purchases? This has to be a fcuking joke!

What is it with everyone here that supports the absolute shambles bestowed upon the country x that they resort to having to call people with opposing views as 'freeloaders'?

I don't know about you, but when I'm in a different country, be it on a business or pleasure trip, I usually find myself in a bar or a restaurant at some point. I don't seem to ever find the need to pop down to the supermarket and buy some fabric softener, bag of spuds and a litre of milk, that I could compare to my local centra, but hey that's just me.

I'm pointing out the many different taxing policies in different eu countries, but **whoosh**.

You also left out the 'scraping the barrel' bit of my post.

    It's quite clear why too.

Up to one hundred and fifty brave souls, (or thousands and thousands acording to organisers) protested against the upcoming charges against Comrade Murphy and his gang of merry men, women and children. http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/news/up-to-150-antiwater-charge-protesters-target-garda-station-over-joan-burton-charges-31458751.html

The first thing I spotted in the photos was the socialist party banners, I just assumed it was a party rally of some sort.

I understand the newspapers were considering an alternate headline:

0.18% of Tallaght Population Protest against Water Charges

Even if it was only 18% of the population of Tallaght that turned out last night...

You would be hard pressed to find a water meter in Tallaght, never mind a citizen prepared to pay the water charge.

Fact is,the water protest campaign that runs through communities throughout Ireland, has succeded in exposing the lackies in power, even Eurostat acknowledges this.

We put a stop to the quango gallop.

August 29th be there if you believe in democracy.

    0.18% not 18%

    That's zero point one eight.

It's not a protest for democracy, it's a protest against paying for the upkeep and provision of an essential resource. It sounds like your confusing the two.

Based on opinion polls, they seem to be losing a lot of support on the back of it, and looks doubtful if they'll be returned to finish the job. But then again, that may be down to the fact that FG based their campaign on not charging for a broken system.

well if they get voted out because of it that is democracy in action.

Indeed. And I'm going to exercise my democratic right not to exchange any of my hard earned cash over to a bloated, unnecessary quango, until I am legally compelled to do so by the courts.
