Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Outside of this season (and if we are being honest about it the second half of last season too) Ronaldo doesn't have any weaknesses as a goal scorer. If we are talking about Ronaldo as a complete player then his weaknesses have been pretty crystal clear his entire career, especially because of people's propensity to compare him with Messi (literally the most complete footballer in the history of football!). He's a world class inside forward, an ok 9 (by world class standards) and WAS a good winger (right or left). Messi is a 9, a false 9, a 10, a 7, an 8 and a 6 and he is legitimately world class in all of those roles often playing a number of them in a single game. His heat maps, his passes executed and received maps will back that up, along with his chances created stats (a far better indicator than assists by the way) his through ball stats, his assist stats and, of course, his goalscoring stats. Thing is though, you don't really even need those stats to back up that argument, all you have to do is watch Messi play, just as he did last Saturday against Sevilla, to see exactly why there is no more complete, or brilliant, player than Messi.

Did anyone say Ronaldo was a more complete player than Messi though?

Someone did say that there are those in denial about Ronaldo's talent. I absolutely do not deny his talent ss a goalscorer (it's literally impossible to do so). However my point is that there are those who vastly overstate his other talents which, when compared with Messi's ability in so many roles, never stack up well at all.

Poyet sacked Betis it's all gone down hill for him since he left Brighton.

Not really that sorry for him. Seemed like he was at a decent club and threw his toys out of the pram and left when maybe he could have had a stable club and built something in the medium to long term at Brighton.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink jumped too quickly when QPR offered him the job as well and it worked out badly for him.

Sometimes in management the one your with is actually the best option.

    1-0 Real Madrid.

    Ronaldo with a free kick.

Soft goal given away, Gabi stepped out of the wall. Torres still up top for Atletico for some reason.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,631 ✭✭✭Dirty Dingus McGee

It seems complete madness that Gameiro isn't in ahead of Torres.

2 nil 9 points already ahead of alethico if it stays like this.

Real are not playing stunning football all the time but Zidane has them organised

3 for Ronaldo played well tonight besides the goals

    Phenomenal.

Greatest pure goalscorer I've ever seen.

Both himself and Luis Enrique get way too little appreciation and too much criticism from their local 'club' style presses. Rob Palmer made the point about Zidane's time in Juve. It really does relevant. Madrid are incredibly difficult for any team to beat.

A great assist by Bale for the third goal.

One thing I noticed was, when Bale received the ball five yards inside Atletico's half, Ronaldo was just a yard or two inside Real's half and he literally put his head down and burst his bóllox for 10 or 15 yards or so to get a head start on the defender. With 13 minutes to go in the game. I love that. Pure determination to score another goal. These things go unnoticed so many times but it really is incredible.

He gets so many easy goals because he'll always sprint half the length of the pitch to get into position.

Not just half the length of the pitch pretty sure there was a goal a few seasons back for Madrid where he headed the ball clear from his own penalty spot and then burst all the way up to the field to be in line for the finish 6 seconds later.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭ERG89

Atletico seemed totally flat there tonight, I expected more but the result never looked in doubt after Madrid took the lead.
The guys on commentary were saying Simeone looks all set to go to Inter when his contract runs out, I feel he doesn't think he can do any more there, shortening his contract and his reaction from the CL final kinda said that to the squad too.
They beat Bayern but they have had their own problems this season also.

First scoreless draw for Barca in the league since Espanyol in January. No Messi or Suarez, 28 shots on goal, 81% possession and yet couldn't beat Malaga who, in the end, finished with 9 men.

That's the thing.. Those that want to knock Ronaldo will always say that was just a tap in and ignore the fact he wanted to get there and burst himself to do so. Its not coincidence he ends up in the right place for those sort of goals.

It was nice of Madrid players to allow Ronaldo to score a tap in hat trick last night

  • Ronaldo never really does it in big games, A nothing player.

Needs some Bill at the end for added effect

It's Malaga even if they had Messi Suarez xavi and ronaldinho they'd still somehow manage to conspire to draw with Malaga.

For all the talk of "easy" finishes lukkaku in the two previous international breaks had very similar opportunities to Ronaldo last night. He squandered most of them. Players like Ronaldo make those finishes look easy. Technically they're rather difficult.

Barca struggling so far in their away match to real sociedad. Real pressing high and creating problems from Barcelona.

From woeful to worse than woeful with Alba's injury.

    Sociedad have been superb.
Much different style to many PL teams who play with so much fear especially the bottom 10.

I have sympathy for Pique, he shouldn't be playing here tonight and that's obvious. His love of the club is making him fight on but he's so far off the pace.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,868 ✭✭✭Andersonisgod

GOALAZO! GOALAZO MESSI! There's only Messi, there's no other in football. He's the hero, he's the saviour here.

Beautiful finish. I wonder if he meant to pop it up like that with his first touch.

So what relevance is a very bad decision againt RS to a game a week ago?

Barca very lucky to get a point there, Sociedad would have been deserving winners, they were excellent tonight.

The difference in reaction to two similar incidents both here and likely in Spanish media tomorrow.
