Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

One or two mistakes in how many tens of thousands of courses and exam results? Let's get things into perspective. See what happens in Round Two before flipping out.

Very true and it could easily be because the SEC didn't send the results to the CAO. They can only work with results that have been submitted to them.

How are the script viewing times organised? Is it randomly chosen or are there ranges that students must be in to be put in a certain time?

I think it's random, although you can request a specific slot if you're busy or something.

There's normally a session between 6-9 pm on Friday evening, then a Saturday morning session between 9-12. I think there can be a Saturday afternoon session as well depending on the size of the school, it's never needed in the school I work in.

I think so. Unless you've gone into the school to say you'll be away on one of the days, then I know students have been accommodated for the other day in my school.

Any help would be much appreciated tbh. Maybe your experience of the course etc. thanks! :)

No bother at all, I know how daunting it all can be :)

The course is great! It is usually a very large course which wittles away as you go through the years but you'll never have to worry about being lonely as not only will you be with coursemates but other courses too who take English, like Language course and Arts. I was one of those courses!

Unfortunately, due to the huge amount of students, it is quite difficult to get 1x1 time with your lecturers at first but in second year to third year, people start to get to know you and you'll know your favourite lecturers then!

Course material can vary. As you can guess, there is A LOT of reading in this course. One thing I learned, unless it specifically says and you get percentage docked for not doing it, DO NOT buy all your books. The MLA handbook is handy to have but everything is on the internet nowadays and if there are any books you need, I'd be happy to sell them for under 5euro. You can get them all super cheap off other students or just find pdfs online! It saves SO much more money :D
Do make sure you read some of the material though and do it in advance as I always made that mistake and had to write an essay whilst I read the books!

Honestly though, the course is great. You'll really come out of your shell, form some great opinions and become opinionated yourself if you aren't already and you'll find what you're really good at even if you don't get there till 3rd year!

You also get to go on co-op and Erasmus and have options to go abroad and get a new experience!

It's a great open course and I am sure you'll love it :D

If you need anything, feel free to ask here or PM me and if you need books, I desperately need rid of mine and would go very low in pricing :D

    ENJOY and congrats :D

I didn't get mine approved until Decemeber last year after applying in June. I applied in ay this year, and got it two weeks ago.

I think if you contact the college and explain your situation they'll understand because a lot of people registering for SUSI grants will be in the same boat and that's the whole point of the SUSI grant!

I know loads of people who got it before we started college. I just had to pay 1/4 of my fees as a deposit last year, and once my grant was approved, i got a refund.

I was provisionally awarded the grant in mid July but have had no word back since. If I don't hear anything in the next few days I'll definitely talk to the Fees office in the college.
    Thanks a million :D

I applied for a SUSI grant but didn't get accepted. However that doesn't mean the 1665 euro first instalment at the same time isn't a big ask and so I did a lot of research on the UCC website and found a payment plan which would allow for smaller but more regular payments. I sent an email to the Fees Office and they confirmed it is acceptable for me to do so. I scanned the completed form and emailed it back. I am waiting for confirmation now. Should I continue to do so or commence payment?

Relax biosci, there's loads of students in your position, myself included. If you're under the income thresholds you'll get the grant.

Just take you're letter from Susi with you on registration day & the college will wait for Susi to pay them .

Lads I've got no confirmation yet if I've been let have a grant from SUSI. Last thing I got was them asking for some personal information but if I had already opted in to apply to SUSI in the CAO form (which I did) I didn't need to send them anything. Haven't got word since. I meet the criteria, and I did start sending them off info straight away once the thing opened. Should I be worried atm that I haven't got any confirmation?

I didn't hear anything from SUSI until like October last year, they wanted me to send documents and then I got my first grant payment in December. Calm down and have a bit of patience :P :pac:

I was 21 when I started in DCU and was surprised at the amount of people older than me on the course! There'll be a wide range of ages, don't be worrying. Besides no one even asks each other what age you are in college. I was great friends with a girl for nearly 2 years before I found out she was older than me! Be grand!

No, if you're under the threshold you'll get the grant. Nothing at all to be worried about, unless you haven't been upfront about all your income or something.

How does the script viewing work? I've dropped off the form at school the day of the results, and still haven't heard back. I'd imagine they'll mail me the card with the date ticked, do they? Anyone got 'em?

Yeah I just scraped it with exactly 595.. It'll be odd going from being one of the smartest in your class to one of the least, in terms of academic achievement anyways haha:') but we'll be in lectures with all the general science people for the first 2 years so be grandd!

Can anyone help me with the college fees situation? For UCC you need to complete the first part of registration online which involves paying the fees of over €1000. I'm waiting to be accepted for the grant though, so should i skip this step of the registration and just explain to the peer leaders or whoever on the day of registration part 2? Thanks :)

It's normally a teacher in the school who organises it. Teachers aren't back until next week so I doubt you will hear about it for a few days yet.

Realistically it's cutting it fine this year with the viewing on Friday/Saturday of next week but a lot of schools not open again until Thursday. Give them a ring on Thursday if you haven't heard back.

All you have to pay is the capitation fee. I did my orientation there last year and hadn't been accepted for my grant yet and no one even asked.

Honestly, when the top score possible is 625, it means a maximum of 30 points covers the whole class. Everyone in the course probably got at least 5/6As. At that level there isn't going to be much difference between you all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,080 ✭✭✭EoghanIRL

The amount of points a course is doesn't necessarily reflect its difficulty.
Everyone is similar going into high points courses regard the leaving cert. The lc isn't a test of intelligence though and this can show in college results.
However the same standard bell curve applies. Within each course you will have high and low scores too and most people will score around average.

Just do your best and don't worry about other people would be my advice.

If you think everyone in high points courses scores extremely high then you are mistaken. It's hard to compare college to the lc anyways. Some people can apply themselves way better at 3rd level.

40 points increase?? I really can't get over it. What are the chances of me getting in on 2nd round offers if I've fallen 5 points short of the first round min points?

That really sucks, I think you have fallen victim to the fact that there are a lot more candidates doing honours maths and those candidates not all going into engineering, pure maths etc.

Did you get a place on the later offers?

    Send off form.
Turn up at school at stipulated time.
School will have your scripts and copies of the marking schemes.
If you want to appeal then the school will give you a form to fill.
    Not much to it.

I sit here, yet again disappointed with not receiving an offer (2nd round just opened 45mins ago).
I've applied to view my top 6 scripts; 2 of which are A2's so I'm hopeful they may go up to A1's. Although with no reduction in points in the second round offer I'm not sure the course will allow me in until next year maybe?

Anyway, I've accepted a similar course in Cork. Although the points are far lower (445), I'm still looking forward to it.

Here's to the crappy points system ay!

Question for a friend. He was 5 points short of his first offer for Bees in UCC and was hoping for a second round offer. I understand R2 offers are never guaranteed but is it certain now that he wont get one because it's nearly 10am and they were released at 6am? He applied for courses in the late applications available to previous college students, meaning he doesn't log on to cao he must wait for an email/letter. Just wondering if anyone knows about this?

    Thanks!
