Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

99 Bandit cutting out

First time posting in the motorbike forum, just got going on the bike in the past couple of weeks. Bought my first bike, a 99 Bandit 600 and have had a couple of little problems on my first few evenings out on it.

First problem was with the battery, wouldn't turn over the engine but replaced it and started fine, not a big issue.

Was out during the week, riding along in top gear about 100kph and bike started to lose power slowly after about 15 miles, was giving it throttle but when I slowed and clutched to pull in the engine cut out. Wouldn't fire back up but eventually got it going by opening the choke and got home in 3rd gear with almost choke fully open. Only noticed when I got home that one of the cylinders plug leads had come loose. Stuck this back in and it started the next day with no probelems.

I had a look at the plug in this cylinder and it looked a bit caked in carbon so I replaced it today. Went for about a 60 mile spin this afternoon, almost home and started to give trouble again. Lost power (slower than the first time though), geared down and it cut out. Took out the newly replaced plug and it looked fairly black. Took a bit of choke and throttle to get it going again.

I'm really not sure what the problem is here. Obvisouly there is something going on with the plug/lead/carb for this cylinder, but cannot pinpoint the problem. Anybody have any suggestions on how to diagnose and fix? Really don't want to stuck far from home with this problem again, especially when I'm a newbie in the biking world!

On the plus side, as stressful as the situation was, it really was a bit of a confidence builder!

    Thanks lads

    Hi,

Possibly sounds like a fuel starvation issue, is there an inline filter on the fuel line? Can you tell if its running on all cylinders when it starts up after cutting out?

Sounds very similar to a problem I had with my cb400. I'll tell you what I done and it sorted the issue for me. I removed the carbs and gave them a good clean including the jets and fitted new gaskets. I also fitted new carb rubbers\boots from carbs to airbox and to engine. This ensures a good airtight seal.

Another possible cause it the fuel tank itself. Does it run off a vacuum? If so look up how to diagnose vacuum issues on the fuel tank.

When you have the carbs removed check the float heights because if these are not correct it could also be a cause of fuel starvation.
