Hi, I have an elderly relative who's eyesight is not what it used to be and is thinking about upgrading from a 32" Sony (KDL-32CX520) to a 42-43" screen. (prefer not 40")

Don't need SMART, Networking etc and uses an external box (via HDMI) so tuners are not important.

What make(s)/model(s) would you recommend that give a nice sharp clear picture and especially a decent picture on SD channels?  Budget is preferably below 500 euro but could stretch a little?  Had a look at Sony but they seem to have discontinued 42" in favour of the smaller 40" and their 43" models are way out of budget.

    Thanks.

    Fresh,

apologies for the delay getting back to you - if you want a simple but excellent quality small screen then Sony do a beautiful model - the KDL32W705 - unfortunately it has lots of features built in :) ie its smart and has a built in satellite tuner but its really easy to operate and above all has great picture quality both on SD and HD - its under budget at €469 and that price includes a 6 year warranty and delivery anywhere across Ireland - all in all a really great, quality TV, just is a small package!

Thanks again and keep us posted if you would like to order or of course if we can assist in any way,

    Hi John,

I think you misread my post. It's about upgrading FROM a 32" screen to a 42-43" screen so I was looking for recommendations for 42-43".

    Maybe have another read.

    Thanks.

    Fresh,

that's what I get for speed reading / rushing, apologies!

If you wanted to step up into the 40" range then the same TV is available as the KDL40W705:
    http://euro.richersounds.ie/p-201289-bravia-kdl40w705cbu.aspx

At €589.00 again including the 6 year warranty and delivery - this time I acknowledge its a little smaller than you would like, and a slight budget buster, but its a cracking screen - moving up to 43" and over with Sony will unfortunately stretch the budget outside the €500 price range - the closest we have is the excellent KDL43W755 which is €739 and again may actually have too many features for you?
    http://euro.richersounds.ie/p-201391-bravia-kdl43w755cbu.aspx

From other brands you could have a look at the Samsung 43J5100 which is now €589:
    http://euro.richersounds.ie/p-201304-ue43j5500.aspx

Apologies again for the initial mis-read and don't hesitate to drop me a line if we can assist in any way,

Sorry to hijack the thread but looking for a 40''+ screen also.

With regards to the above two TV's John linked, which is better? Both are the same price. I need a good motion rate for fast-paced movies.

The J5500 seems to get average reviews regarding motion blur; http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-brand/samsung/j5500

    Hi Techmaster.

The 40W705 in terms on motion handling is rated at 200Hz (XR - Sonys way of measure the Hz).

The Samsung 43J5500 is rated at 400 PQI (Samsung's way of measuring Hz).

"Manufacturers now use their own measurements so can not necessarily be compared between brands. Examples include LG - Motion Clarity Index (MCI), Samsung - Clear Motion rate (CMR), Philips - Perfect Motion Rate (PMR), Sony - Motionflow XR and Panasonic - BLS (Back Light Scanning). All these figures are twice or more than the traditional 100Hz/200Hz refresh rate figures. No abbreviation indicates traditional measurement. Plasmas generally use a 600Hz sub-field refresh rate."

Both screens are very similar in spec. The Samsung has an extra HDMI input.
    http://www.richersounds.com/compareproducts

The Samsung would have more apps over the Sony.

Both screens have a very good picture and I don't think either would let you down.

    Hope this helps a little.

Any questions drop me a post.

    Hi

Hi jacking also. Which if any or would both tv's mentioned above have a built in tuner to be able to receive free to air satellite ? And which remote for this would be easiest to use?

    Thanks

Hi Clogher71, many thanks for your post. Unfortunately neither of the models above have a freesat tuner built in.

For a model with freesat around 40", you would need to look at either Samsung 40JU6410 - http://euro.richersounds.ie/p-201323-ue40ju6410.aspx at €949 or the Sony KD43X8305 - http://euro.richersounds.ie/p-201400-bravia-kd43x8305cbu.aspx at €999

Both of these models are currently available for shipping, so if you were interested, or had any other questions, drop us a post or PM

    Cheers
