A study of more than 200,000 galaxies shows the universe is producing half as much energy as it did two billion years ago, slowly dying in a long, drawn-out decline, astronomers say.

An international team of researchers used several of the world's most powerful telescopes to study the huge number of galaxies at wavelengths from infrared to far ultraviolet to measure how much energy they were putting out.

What they found agreed with previous calculations that the universe's light in these wavelengths is slowly going out.

"Newer galaxies are simply putting out less energy than galaxies did in the past," says astronomer Mehmet Alpasian, with NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

OK, it's gonna take trillions of years but this is fierce depressing.
from 2.25 billion years ago to 75 billion years ago, the energy output of the universe apparently fell by about 40 percent.

    :(

    Aload of nonsense

I was just reading about this work "they" are doing on replacing harddrives with DNA Drives
On hard drives, we use zeros and ones to represent data. DNA, meanwhile, uses four chemical bases (A,T, C and G), strung together like rungs on a sugar-phosphate ladder. It’s got four letters instead of two numbers, but both systems can store endlessly complex permutations of information.

They are looking at putting 300,000 Terabytes in an ounce of DNA and it'll stay error free for millions of years.

    Sure what's the point now...:(

The Universe started with the Big Bang, so just like we have passed the longest day of the year and so are heading into winter, the Universe is heading towards the Big Crunch. And then the whole thing starts again.

    Not that depressing really.
