Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It's a 5min job, I tried to do it by the book, dairy gold give you a copy of the nitrates, so knew the fertiliser & meal, the rest is just housing and was much the same as 2016

Today is the last day for the Carbon Navigator. Just realised my accountant has all my paperwork so I can't do it. Up the walls all week with silage.
What are the penalaties for a late one?

(Carbon navigator - what a load of ****e!!!!!!!!!!!)

Penalty could be as high as 20% for a late submission of the C.N., try an get it back to the ICBF as soon as posible

Just log on and fill it out Patsy. I'm sure you know if you fed 12tonne of ration or 112. It takes to minutes. The same for fertiliser. The rest is just rough dates of turn out housing and when you spread your slurry. Just log on fill it out and don't be worrying about it.

Filled it out there. Kinda mad when you have loads of different turn out and housing dates. Had a guess-timate of the fertiliser and meal fed. Had a copy of last years, so worked from there.

It's a bit mad alright. Better fill in..I often wonder how they can reconcile all these different forms to check if you are guessing or not

Did this last year & they reduced payments. Try to keep beyond the five months .

I would have an opinion that a top up payment may be loaded onto the top of the BDGP scheme. What does anyone else think?

I'd guess that they will use the reference number of cows from the BDGP for payment. I hope that if a scheme comes in, and I think that's a huge if, that it's not only paid on cows that are already in the BDGP. Lads shouldn't be excluded just because the didn't sign up for genomics.

If it does come it will be after 2020 at this stage. It’ll be a new genomics scheme. You won’t get money for nothibg

Interesting presentation by the ICBF. Seems their end goal is to produce a cow with a replacement index of €200 and would take about 15 years.
Looks like the BEEP scheme will be used to shorten this time.
They also ran pilot scheme of DNA calf registration so this might be how all calves are registered in the future if they can convince the Department

Another theoretical exercise without any solid foundations. Icbf did a presentation that all beef tastes the same...they have a star system where I have cows that were genomic tested 4 stars are now 2 stars and and they qualify for the scheme....icbf like moving onto the next shiny new toy..

DNA calf registration would be a great idea. You would have the bull's name on the calf's card. Great way to stand over replacement heifers breeding, if you were selling them.

Cant figure out why all calves aren't all DNA;ed at birth, it would mean you know exactly what you are buying even as a calf and it is a lot easier to stick a DNA tag in a suck than a fully grown animal. It might also stop some lads messing. I bought a lovely blue SH heifer with a LM calf a foot earlier this year. The cards says shes is an AAx and the calf is a HEx, not a chance with either of them. The cow has no stars at present but plan on DNAing her next spring to see if the ICBF can figure out what she is bred to and maybe pick up a few stars. She is quite, plenty of milk and has made a lovely job of her calf so in my book she is a good cow. The calf is lovey blue black, my only fault of him is he has a very strong kick.

In fairness everything shoukd be genomic tested and I would go one step further that all pedigree cattle are tested for defects ie like myostatin in Angus...as only last week in the journal there was a good piece on myostatin which stated that it results in harder calving lower fertility and less milk...all are bad characteristics...especially hard calving in Angus....

Funny how people want more stuff to do at more cost for the same amount of money theyre going to get.

All this could be done at tagging stage, so no extra work as such.

With the cost of tags & bvd testing, we should be getting this anyway

In pedigree it should be expected ensure integrity of all pedigrees as we all have heard stories of wrong parents on certs

If I buy in a 4 or 5 star animal to satisfy the scheme this year, how long must I keep her for?

I have 2 KYA young cows/heifers and they are lovely and quiet - have I missed something, are they going to turn into nutjobs as they grow older?

My comment was on pedigree Angus...bad personality and completely brainless...had 4 here and now zero

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,678 ✭✭✭Bellview

Havent used him at all. I would like to see a few off him first. The wedderlie blackbox that he is a grandson off is a massive bull but I never saw many great cattle off him even from the mogeely herd where he was a stock bull....as mogeely folks are good show people and if they had a good one I would expect to see it at some show

Sorry should have said cyi is under rated especially in the stars
