In the next couple of week i expect my new quote and the only difference there will be with last year is that my car got 1 year older, and so did I.

    No claims\accidents\penalty points in 2017.

    I was quoted and paid €412 for a 03 Laguna in DEC2016.

    Watch this space.....

I'll be very interested to hear this

Yes it does actually. If you have a perfectly fine older car but it's costing you €1500 for the privilege to drive it, then that's the cost of insurance. Driving a newer car usually brings down the cost of insurance but you shouldn't be forced to upgrade if the car passes it's NCT, has no history of claims, if the driver has no history of claims etc.

Having a newer car doesn't always reduce the premium. My son is changing from a 1.6 2005 Corolla to a 1.2 2011 Clio and it is increasing his premium by €288 with 5 months left on the policy. Doesn't make sense.

It's a joke alright. Some of the quotes are actually higher than what the car is worth

Had to bite the bullet this year and buy a newer car (152) as I was getting quotes for nearly €1000 for an '03 Fiesta!

It was a grand wee motor that never gave me a day of trouble and now it's scrapped because MSL don't sell old motors.

I absolutely agree that the insurance situation in Ireland is a joke but shelling out a lot of money to save a little is surely a false economy also?

    151 Superb 170bhp

    1 Point
    6 years NCB

Quote ranged from 1100 down to 575 with An Post / AIG - went with the cheapest

I recon it’s 100 quid cheaper here versus Dublin

You're supposed to have insurance to get tax,not the other way round.

I get what you want to do.

I don't understand why though. An untaxed car is unusable.

Why? It hasn't been taxed in ages and still drives fine! NCT'd now too.

The implication of having a car untaxed for a prolonged period could be that the person isn't too bothered with the legalities of road use and is therefore more likely to be a reckless driver?

True but I'd no other choice. I need my car for work and If I can't get insurance on an '03 then it pretty much a useless piece of metal. The reason i opted for a 152 is at least I won't have to worry about insurance for a good few years. If insurance wasn't an issue and I wanted to upgrade I would of bought a 2011/12 to save a few quid but I'd of faced the insurance problems sooner.

No. I'm just not paying twice the rate because my car is pre 08. Car is in great nick and just sailed through the NCT.

If you had a NCB that expires as abroad over 2yrs - you can get a quote but not be loaded as 1st time ever driver

Won’t be cheap but it prevents you ending up as “declined cases agreement “case

    Pm if totally stuck

    BMW 318i - 2001 with only 67k miles
TPFT with AIG jumped from €650 to €1087 !!
    Liberty quoting €670

Presume getting screwed because of car age

UPDATE: Got a quote from AXA for €635, same terms as the €1087 from AIG (who I've been with for 5 years)

Well regardless, that what it look's like form the insurance company's point of view.

With all due respect if you're "just not paying twice the rate because my car is pre 08." may I suggest that you pay your tax every 3 or 6 months? Or else purchase a car with a smaller engine?

If however, you can not afford to pay motor tax, you can not afford a car. Simple as..

Personally I only buy the full protection.

If you have step back you are guaranteed that your premium will increase by 10% to 20% (depending on the company and their scale) in the event of a claim, as well as the standard rate increases. With full protection, in the event of a claim, you are not going to have an increase (apart from the standard rate increases)

If you can afford the €60 Id recommend it tbh.

IN reality NCB is a smokescreen. If you make a claim even with full NCB your policy will still be loaded the next year. as in the pre ncb amount will rocket up.

Until you fully settle the claim which can take along time in some cases 1-2 years. you are tied to your insurance company as no body else will touch you.

When you are fully settled insurance companies will still load you as they ask you have you had any claims in the last 5 years

Just got quoted €1800 from AIG.
    2006 1.6l Volkswagen Passat.
    Age 37
Full licence 11 years, no points and full NCD.
A complete joke and some places won't even quote.

won't quote based on that information - that can't be right...

    have you tried a broker?

Sounds about right once the car hits 10 years old. my mother was paying 650 or so for years, went to 1800 after 10 years, then 2350 after 11 years. no change in details other than age of the car.

I've tried everywhere. Its the age of the car despite it sailing through the NCT.
I paid 400 on a 2.0l Ford before then changed to a Honda 1.6 and it jumped to 1200.
Cannot win with these insurance companies
