Yes, it is normal and you are going to face hefty premiums until your build up your NCD again.

Driving since I was 17 as a fully comp. On a full Irish licence. Never had an accident or claim until April 2015 where I crashed my car in a single car accident, moumted a bend and upturned.

Basically my premium went from just under €600 per year to just shy of €2000 with Alliance.

Is this normal that I get absolutely screwed to the hilt. I'm now 29 years of age.

You made a claim so is it not reasonable to think that the company will increase your premium?

Did you lose your full bonus?

I knew the premium would increase I've got no problem with that whatsoever. But from €600 to €2000 for one year....? lost my ncb.

    Had you a full bonus?

If so that's a minimum 50% increase garaunteed, coupled with general increases and the fact there is potentially a claims load applied aswell.

There are folk on here getting 100%+ premium increases with a full bonus and that have no claims, at least your increase is justifiable.

can i ask is bonus protection not a scam anyway, genuinely? i never opt for it because i assumed it was.

like i have 8 years NCB this year, say i had stepback bonus protection and i write off my car this year and claim for it, claim settled before next renewal. if i go to a different insurer next year and tell them i have 7 years NCB but i had an accident last year, my premium will go through the roof anyway, so what's the point?

I always opt in for full protection. My understanding is NCB protection aims to protect your discount percentage not cost of insurance.

Your premium is calculated based on your car, age, location, license type, claim history, points, etc.

If you have a claim, your premium is going to be loaded depending on cost of claim. Then your NCB discount is going to be applied.

So hoping to pay same after a claim because of NCB protection is naive but it reduces the damage.

well that's the whole thing. it offers you €x amount of discount from a number that they havn't told you yet. so clearly they are going to create a non discount amount to screw you to the value they want anyway.

like i'd be interested to see the difference in a premium between myself with:
    - 8 years NCB
    - 7 years NCB through stepback protection and a claim last year
    - 0 years NCB and a claim last year

i'd imagine the latter two would be very similar.

is it also the case that NCB protection isn't always transferable between companies?

You are right about potential scenario of loading the premium too much after a claim. But in this case you lose 20-30 euro. If they don't do it, you will save more than that. And you are free to buy your insurance from another insurer with reduced NCB if it is cheaper than your own insurer.

My friend claimed 2k for repair of a car worth 3k with no third party involved. He had NCB protection and his premium stayed same during renewal. I guess cost of claim is more important parameter in such scenarios.

NCB protection is not expensive for what it is IMHO. Not sure about transferrability of protected NCB though . Probably depends on the insurer's own policy.

The step back doesnt start at the amount you years you have above 5.

Eg, if you have a 5 year bonus and claim with step back you will usually go back to either a 2 or 3 year bonus.

You could have a 20 year NCB and claim with step back and you would go back to the 2 or 3 years.

thanks. so a bit of a waste then?

can i ask, if you know. is 2 years bonus via the use of stepback protection and a recent claim likely to generate essentially the same premium as zero no claims bonus and a recent claim?

    Age: Mid 40s

    Car: 2011 BMW 520

    NCD: Full (9+ years)

Licence: both full 10+ years. 3 points for F.

    Cover: Fully comp, protected

Best quote: €497 with Liberty (renewal)

All other quotes so far seem to be €600+ so think we will be staying where we are. Certainly not as bad as lots of other quotes here but still an increase of about 100 over last year so 25%!!

My insurance expires 2 of March 2016, how soon does the renewal letter normally come through?

I'm with currently with AVIVA paying €702 for me and the missus.

This was by far the most reasonable quote we were able to get last year so I'm preparing myself for for a shock this year based on what I've read here..

Normally 4 weeks before renewal, most places wont quote unless your renewal is in the next 28 days.

Gulp! I am in the same situation with Aviva ... end of Feb. Dreading it with a 00 car but they said in public that they would not refuse to renew with existing customers. So far my only quotation of about 8 asked for is around E700 from AIB.

NCD: 1 years (the missus had a tip!)

    Full Licence: 17 years

Best quote (of 2 :-)): ~€1400 with An Post - underwritten by Aviva. Just renewed but without NCB didn't really shop around, tested with 123.ie and got €2500. (was about 1800 last year after loosing NCB which could have been worse!)

I never had claims protection but might get it once I build back up NCB.

One thing about the no claims does that not really lock you into that company or are they generally transferable.
I guessing not. e.g. I had to claim few years ago for new locks after car was stolen and got it back. Policy had the option to pay out for locks without loosing NCB, but you do loose your actually NCB cos it went back to 0 yrs the next year even though yes they still gave the the full 50% discount. So in effect I was stuck with them until I built back up the 5 yrs again!

    This might cheer you up:

My wife's renewal (Comp) this month on a 2000 Micra was €284 from Aviva.

They will require the car to have a current valid NCT cert.

Same boat with NoNonsense. cheapest of the bunch, even though it went up.
Funny thing, when I tried to get a normal quote from them, the website told me to fcuk off. Same as last year. And last year my car wasn't even 10 years old.

    No Nonsense - 3rd party with breakdown assist - lat yr - €216 - this year €471

    AA - 3rd party - €447

    AXA - 3rd party - €655

    Chill - 3rd party - €514

Best quote: €457 from AXA. They were hesitant to insure at first but given my previous business with them they accepted the policy (though not before the asked everything and nearly the colour of my boxers!). Think they were confused by a private individual having a commercial vehicle for non-business purposes. Additional discounts applied for the wife having her car insured with them & for being a Credit Union member. Additional cover for towing.

In all honesty I didn't shop too hard. Tried about 6 websites for quotes but because I didn't know the specific carrying capacity they kept failing to quote. Only other actual quote was from insuremyvan which was nearly €100 more for just TPF&T.
