Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. In the end I went with Acorn insurance for €470 including full bonus protection, breakdown assist and every conceivable extra.
It's with Zenith who have said they will be pulling out of the Irish market next year but will still maintain cover for existing policies.

That was last year. This year:

47 yr old male + 49 yr old spouse as named driver (with own car)
    Car: Renault Fluence 1.5l
NCB: 9+ years for both of us
    Licence: Full Irish 23 years
Points: 2 points dropped off in July so have 0 now
    Claims: None

Renewal from Acorn with Footprint Insurance is 437 including full NCB protection, breakdown assist etc.

I checked every insurer that do online quotes and they quoted me between 484 (Aviva) and 777 (First Ireland) for the same level of cover. Sheridan Insurance were the exception in that their best quote was just below 1000.

30 yr old male + 32 yr old partner as named driver (also owns own car)
Car: Seat Leon 2.0 TDI 150BHP
NCB: +5 years for both of us
    Licence: Full Irish 12 years
    Points: 0
    Claims: 0
An Post renewal price : 580 Fully comprehensive, down from about 700 last year.

Best price shopping around was 123.ie who were quoting 940e. Liberty wanted 1800+.

That's 2 good years in a row with An Post for me, very happy with the service throughout the year too.

Be sure to confirm with An Post 2 things
    1. If penalty point discount in place = how much is it as that is retractable and means major cost for simple 3 pp for speed/seatbelt or holding phone

    2. Confirm have you a) total loss (b) stepback bonus or (c) full protect bonus

With Post Insurance you can also have NCD Bonus protection with step back...

    So there are four options:
    - No protection
    - NCD Step Back
    - NCD Protection (two unlimited claims in a three year period)
    - NCD Protection with step back.

    37 Male (main driver) + 34 Female
    Car: 2002 Golf GTI 1.8t 150bhp
    NCB: 6 years
    Licence: Full Irish 12 years
    Points: 3 (speeding Sep 2016)
    Claims: 0
Cover: Third party, fire and theft with stepback and windscreen cover.
Previous year insurance: €508 Post Insurance
An Post renewal price : €688

    Quotes:
Campion €1096.76 Online Quote, after a phone call could get it down to €852
    Chill €949 Phone Quote
    AA €889 Online Quote
    Liberty €868.62 Online Quote
    123 €832.19 Online Quote
    Britton €761.54 Online Quote
25plus €718.00 (Comprehensive Cover) Online Quote

I might have to suck it up and take the €180 increase with post insurance as it looks like that's still the cheapest by far

    Renewal time again..........:(

    35 male based in Carlow
    Car: 2003 BMW 320d
    NCB: Maximum
    Licence: Full Irish 10 years
    Points: 0
    Claims: 0
Insurer - Bank of Ireland/RSA Ireland
Cover: Third party, fire and theft with stepback
    Previous year: €475
    This year's renewal: €559

These prices inclusive of €140 discount for being BoI account holder.

Had a quick check around on all the usual suspects and got the life scared out of me. Thought Halloween was over. Have had about a €160 increase in the two years since I've used BoI. Considering the low starting point, can't complain I suppose.
Also tried the trick of re-entering my details as a new customer. Was quoted €1200 for the very same cover and benefits.

Now, based on the above i guess mine will be around the 490/500 mark then next month.

Also half/half looking for another car as mine start to fall apart a little too much and hits the 15 year age.
But if you select a certain model, get 106 hits and then select "petrol" and only 1 hit remains, it will mean it will be a hard task to find something.

UK is pretty much the only option if you want a choice of petrol cars that are less than 8 years old :(

I never understand how they come up with the figures I was with liberty for years then last year they wanted 1500 to renew, so went to the AA for 800, this year the AA wanted 1000 so I'm going back to liberty for 530.

Went from 550 last year to being quoted 720 this year. Same car, an extra years no claims.

I called them up and said that I heard insurance was going down not up, he said that was a misconception due to an article in the Indo a while back and that the reductions haven't kicked in yet. I said that's fine but doesn't explain a 31% increase either. Some joke hi.

Managed to get it at about 630 in the end.

moved from AVIVA to AA last year because AVIVA was looking for 1000+ and AA offer 790.
just got the renew letter and AA now looking for 1137.
best quote offer 995 so far.
    this is insane!
12 years clean drive, no claim no points.
    38
    Full Licence 10 year+

    2009 opel insignia 2.0 cdti 160bph

    €995 ~ €1137

I'm AA. Call them first thing tomorrow. Tell them you've a quote elsewhere for 800 but you want to stay with them. They might not get down to 800 but they will drop significantly.

FYI, if you have AA roadside they apply a discount to your premium, and last year the discount was cheaper than the cost of the Roadside cover so I got it and saved money. If you have that you can also drive any car fully comp, not third party.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,388 ✭✭✭✭Jayop

Oh and if you're on direct debit call them ASAP as once it's within like 3/4 days of the new policy they have to cancel the renewed policy and start a new one so you'll have to pay a deposit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 Net

    Hi, Jayop

went post too, thanks for the info, I got comprehensive for 780 with full protected NCD.

Thanks to Jayop too, I tried to push AA, but they....................well put this way, I am feeling that the companies are trying to push their customers around by raise up the price and force people to accept higher insurance every year.

am I the only person think this way?

Has your insurance usually been over a thousand? Or is this just a recent thing?

    Age: 43
No claims, convictions or penalty points, full no claims bonus
Quotes for fully comp with stepback
Car: Audi A5 2.7D multitronic sports coupe
    Last year: 580E with itsforwomen
    Renewal: 622E
Best: Renewal price with itsforwomen still cannot be beaten and very happy with it as know the car is pushing the premium up, but its worth it
Reasonable alternative: Bank of Ireland - 679E, but no extra charge for monthly payments, so their monthly was closer to itsforwomens price, but slightly less cover.
Worst: liberty Insurance 2,900E - spacers

One thing I did notice was that 2 year stepback varies with insurers. With some companies it means going back 2 yrs from 5 yrs back to 3 yrs , while others are actually taking 3yrs off and bringing it back to 2 yrs, bit of a sneaky one, as some would presume it was 2 yrs off and not back to 2 - this was double checked with several companies before anyone asks.
People should also be aware that stepback is only valid with your insurer, no other company with recognise it. So while you think you protect it, you only do so with your insurer who you then have to rely on not to overcharge you, knowing you are then most likely stuck with them......its a bit of a con job IMO , what say rest of you?

No the same car 4 years ago was €800. As i've gotten older and full no claims etc, its just gone up and up and up. And the narkiness of the people on the other end of the phone along the lines of "what do you expect".

Have a ten year old run around as a second car. 1.4 Golf. I'm worried that we're going to start seeing such unwarranted increases.

It's a joke alright. Some of the quotes are actually higher than what the car is worth

Had to bite the bullet this year and buy a newer car (152) as I was getting quotes for nearly €1000 for an '03 Fiesta!

You are not insuring the car. You're insuring the drivers to drive the car. It makes absolutely no sense to compare the insurance premium to the value of the car.

Yes it does actually. If you have a perfectly fine older car but it's costing you €1500 for the privilege to drive it, then that's the cost of insurance. Driving a newer car usually brings down the cost of insurance but you shouldn't be forced to upgrade if the car passes it's NCT, has no history of claims, if the driver has no history of claims etc.

My car is only driven by myself.
In the next couple of week i expect my new quote and the only difference there will be with last year is that my car got 1 year older, and so did I.

    No claims\accidents\penalty points in 2017.

    I was quoted and paid €412 for a 03 Laguna in DEC2016.

    Watch this space.....

Having a newer car doesn't always reduce the premium. My son is changing from a 1.6 2005 Corolla to a 1.2 2011 Clio and it is increasing his premium by €288 with 5 months left on the policy. Doesn't make sense.
