Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I thought the rsa did.

Last time I got one from them.

Yes, this is correct. I don't know what they were on about at NDLS, I received the letter from RSA and I forwarded it to Chill.

In the mean time I got an online quote from 123.ie for €720 which seems too good to be true. Almost €500 difference compared to my renewal. I'm assuming it's just a new customer discount and then they hike the price the next year.

That's with 123, up 100 on last year and it's the cheapest I can get everyone else quoting 1000 and over!! Just doesn't make sense!

€1,231 - Fully Comprehensive, with TPFT Driving other cars + Full bonus protection [ Zurich ]
    €1,251 - TPFT [ AXA Insurance ]
    €1,348 - Fully Comprehensive [ Liberty Insurance ]

    €1,100 - TPFT [ 123.ie ]
€2,430 - Fully Comprehensive with full NCB protection [ AA ]
    €2,091 - Fully Comprehensive [ Aviva ]

My insurance is ending on 25th of May but I am becoming 25 on 28th of May.
Zurich suggested I wait those 3 days and then call them so I can get it even cheaper (They said it migh be under 1000 for Fully Comp).

It's clear as day that insurance companies are pulling these prices out of their ass.

Sorry if this seems mad to mention again - have you tried liberty and adding parents or a partner or even a friend who is older to your policy? go onto the website and add them in as named and come back to us.

At this rate it should be a sticky to do this and get a pricing then. Sorry if you already did this.

If they cause accident though - Wont it affect my insurance in future?

They will never drive your car........ever. You are just putting down as a named driver. There isn't a law to say that they must then drive your car.

If they have a claim on their own policy separate to your car, it doesn't affect your policy or no claims.

    huh.
€1175 from Liberty Insurance fully comp. (When adding my mother to policy as named driver - only 2 years full irish license).

How the **** does this work? :pac:

I don't understand the sense behind this.

I was told by my company that if I could put down a named driver, even a neighbour, it may bring down my quote.

I took my own Liberty policy out last year with 1 year NCB as a named driver (under 1 year full license) and with my mother and sister named under me it reduced the price from around €1800 to €886 full comp, renewed last month at €846. Car is 2012 Civic 1.8 Petrol.

    It's mad.

now try and add another parent if they are still on this earth. Also look to add a friend or partner who is older. Should come down more.

Yes it will ... no idea why it does but....it does. I have yet to see an example, certainly with liberty, where the quote does NOT come down.

Rest assured again that they may never sit behind the wheel, and if they crash on their own policy it doesn't affect yours directly.

Then why do they ask for details of any claims and points that named drivers have.

If what you say was true a couple could swap insurance between them for the family car according to who had had the biggest claim/number of points in order to get the lowest quote.

Ah I see what you are asking,

So when you buy the insurance at the time it asks those details. In this case, you say no claims and perfect driving record etc etc

If your parent then has a crash on their car, you can then ring your insurance company to update them on this detail. At this point they will either bring up your insurance as they are still a named driver OR you remove them as a named driver on your policy and pay the difference there - whichever is the least increase.

To be clear, your insurance isn't directly effected, your own personal NCB always is separate.

Regarding your final example, yes I don't see what is wrong with doing that. isn't that a prudent choice to make? Again unless I have picked up on the example or what you are suggesting wrong?

After being on the phone for ages I'll seal the deal today, but I'm pretty unhappy with it, yet I'm not getting anything better than that. I'll ask the agent if there's anything else that can be done to bring it down by a little bit.
It's TheAA with 1881 Euro. Car is a 1.6l 07 Kia estate. Have a driver added. I got a speeding fine recently and don't have the points on my license added yet, they don't take them into account until next year.
I have been a named driver on an Axa policy but they'd charge me 300 Euros more (would give me a year NCB for the named driver experience).
My quotes ranged from 1881 Euro to 4900 Euro. What stood out was that me getting my license in an EU country was a big problem, even though I exchanged it. I had two companies refusing me on the ground I'm not Irish born and living here for less than 3 years and even though I have an Irish license, I didn't get in in Ireland.
It was a hugely frustrating process. The insurance is more than half what we pay for our wedding next year.

Renewal was high with Liberty at €897 Fully Comp, they called up yesterday to see why I hadn't renewed and came down to €540 TPFT. Still seemed a bit high to me so told them I would think about it. Got it on the liberty online quote generator myself for €523 TPFT last night so went with that there and then. Now must send my proof of NCB back to Liberty as I think I'll be treated as a new customer

Madness really what you have to do to get the lowest quote but to liberty's credit the next closest quote I could get for TPFT was €1100 and I called/online quoted every insurer on the sticky here.

That they may never drive your car is immaterial... their acceptance on your policy is based on their personal driving history, as you have described it to your insurer. So while they may have clean driving history at the time of putting them on your insurance, if that changes for any reason, then the insurance have to be notified, as the risk has changed. Does not matter that they the were not driving your car at the time they collected the points , fine's or had an accident or whatever. You have to inform the insurance. And for sure, this will cost you some cash.
I may be wrong in this, and I hope that I am, because I normally include some family members on my policy, but not anymore for the very reasons I have stated above. I am open to correction on this, so feel free to comment.

I'm 36, 9 years driving, 7 years NCB. My renewal went up e100 to e820 from BOI car insurance. Fully comp with a few extras. Load of bs. Why would it go up when I've another year of accident free driving. No points or claims in those years either. Current car is 07 zafira 1.6. also my current policy doesn't expire until the end of July, is it best to leave it until the week before to haggle or look around earlier? Like would it work out cheaper to get quotes a week before?. Thanks

Could be because of the age of the car, it's older than 10 years old and you most likely will see another hike when it's 12 years. It's absolute nonsense but that's most likely the reason.
I've read the earlier you get insurance, the better because when you're in a rush, companies tend to add a few quid because you need it one way or the other. I did a quote every second day for a week with certain companies and the price never went down, when I rang them up they said it's because "index fluctuation". Thanks but no thanks. Went with AA this year, they knocked another 200 off my quote when I said I'm going with them.

that seems really high for a 1L... has to be the age of the car.
you should have them quote a 1L Polo less than 10 years old and see what the difference is

Got a renewal quote from AIG for €518. Its for fully comp on a 131 320D and I'm male 50 with max years no claims and max years license held and everything else. Its up €30 from last year.
Would it make sense to name herself as a 2nd driver? She doesn't ever drive my car but would it make a difference?

I know some would be delighted with €518 but I find it quite high and it seems its only ever going up every year.

You don't pose less risk every year anymore. No offence meant - you're past your prime time and the risk will soon go up or already goes up actually. No reason for the premium to go down...

And there is this thing called inflation...

    This year: €937

Only got my renewal today. Was hoping that it would’ve went down more than €40, but by doing some quick online quotes with a few other insurers I doubt I’ll get better than that.

She doesn't ever drive my car but would it make a difference?

My mother in law added me onto her insurance (even though I was already covered under my own policy). Knocked 100quid off for her. I'd say I drive the thing once a month, down to the shops to collect something when I am visiting.

A girl I work with noticed her ex was still on her insurance after they had broken up a few years previously, she knew but ignored it. Anyway, he made contact in a creepy way and it went off in her head that she wanted no reminder of him. Rang up insurance. They added 100quid for the remainder of the year plus a 40euro admin fee. She was giving out down the phone about the ex to the person on the other end who apologised and knocked off the admin fee.

Is it me or the car? So I've an 08 Subaru. It's only a 1.5 and this year the quote is 715. I've 10+ years NCB, license since 2001 and 42 yrs old. I tried axa online and got quoted 1300 with a 500 excess. When I first got the car 2 years ago it was 540 on the first renewal. Any idea how to get it cheaper??

    Get rid of the Subaru....
When I had my Legacy (2.0 diesel) 4 companies wouldn't insure it, and was told by one "We don't insure the brand name" bad reputation it seems,

    Age: 35
    Car: 2002 Volvo S40 1.8 Petrol
    NCD: 9+
    Licence: Full, 9+
Penalty Points: 3 - Speeding (last day of being a Garda would you believe, feckin Go Safes!), got them in October 2016
    Cover: TPFT

    Current insurer: its4women
    Last Year: €678
    This year: €1165

I've no doubt it's the age of the car, i've done a few Online quotes today to see what it's like, and the lowest was €1085. I genuinely cannot afford to change the car, and now I can't afford the insurance. I've sent a message to its4women to ring me back, but that's just crazy! Car is fully road legal, new NCT, and is in better condition than a lot of newer cars, but yet again the insurance has shot up for no apparent reason. I actually don't know what to do. I need the car to drive 25 minutes to work and same home again each day, and I can't get a loan due to an unaffordable mortgage I got rid of (and left with subsequent debt). I can't see a way out of this. I'd have a newer car if I could, but i simply don't have the money, and I can't ask the family for any more loans, because i'm 35 for feck sake. I work full time, 27k a year but most of it is going back to the threatening banks. If I can't renew it, I can't get to work, I lose my job... I'm genuinely very worried about this. Even DD won't work for me, because I won't be able to get the deposit together. And I was doing so well with my anxiety...

Anyone have any suggestions? The quote I got last year included the points, so it can't be that.

Did you try Liberty? I'm with them with a 1998 Jap import Levin BZ-R.

€1669.21 TPFT... I've found out it's not the car as I used a friend's 2011 Laguna 2.0 Diesel with everything else the same and the quote was about 50 cheaper...

Unfortunately the 3 speeding points are used as an excuse to call you a dangerous driver nowadays. I remember a few years ago when they were all touting for business and would ignore the first 2 points.

Try chill.ie but do NOT use the online generator for them or any company. Instead ring all companies as the online quotes seem to be pulled out of a hat at random and for old cars with points this will nearly always exceed €1500.
