Well lads & lassies. Me & 3 friends are travelling to the west Coast of America in November. We have only just booked our flights so we are looking for any info people have for us. We are flying into San Fran on Thur 5th of Nov & flying home from Vegas on Wed 25th of Nov. Our intention is to rent a car & pick it up & drop it off @ airports so we will have the car for the entire time. We plan to spend our 1st weekend in San Fran & then we are fairly flexible until we leave. We want to go to Vegas for our last weekend around Friday 20th but we have almost 2 weeks unplanned so we are looking for Info of what towns along the way to hit & what is good & what is not? Trying to find towns/Cities where there will be a bit of craic during the week, maybe College towns? We are 4 single lads who are in our mid twenties & like beer, women & craic so is there a few places along the way for a bit of midweek craic? From our Research we have been thinking San Fran, Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo, LA, San Diego & then Vegas but we are open to any suggestions. Also any places to stay & decent bars etc...

First off, f**k the car. Get the train or look at a tour bus. Car means someone has to be sober in the morning to drive.

Secondly, how old are you and your mates?

2 lads are 25. 1 lad is 24 & 1 lad is 23. As regards the sober guy we are ok there. 1 lad doesn't drink. He will be the first man on the dancefloor & to chat up any lady but doesn't drink so it's ideal for us. Lots of freedom in the car. Its working out @ less than €200 per person for 3 weeks so it's not too bad!!!

The places you have mentioned are all good spots. We booked easily as went went along ( mid July which would definitely have been busier) just brought a tablet with us and decided day by day.
I wouldn't bother with the car until you are leaving San Fran, parking is crazy expensive and you won't need the car. We picked up one at an Alamo place ( well there were 2 car rental places side by side) just off Union Square and headed out of the city ( def get sat nav). We used the train to get from the airport to the city centre and got off at a station just 100 yards away from our hotel, cheap and handy !!
