Bitter mean north wind here in South Kerry.. 400 asl. The back mountain are impressively snowed , bright in the sun and spectacular clouds are banked high to the west.

Going to try a couple of attachments from Lough Dan, Wicklow from earlier. Chaps just in from building snow men, and thaw well on. Went to our favourite sledging spot the far side of the village when we got back to be met with green grass! Slaughter Hill from NewtownMountKennedy was impassable for a while apparently too.

Went up for a spin though Roundwood and down to Rathdrum earlier this morning. Conditions were pretty bad at the time with snow and hail. Was beautiful though. Witnessed three accidents (low speed) on the way, mostly down to inexperience. One guy stopped his car in Roundwood village in the middle of the road to chat to someone and then couldnt move the car, some people gave him a push and he promptly floored it and veered off into parked cars on the side of the road, unbelievable stuff.
Felt sorry for the cyclists, all their faces were purple and must have been scared out of their wits cycling in those conditions.

    Would say so.

The Met.ie radar for that time showed some development in the area and also in South Limerick and on the Cork/Limerick border

    That'd be fairly heavy hailstone.

    And gone.

Yeah just had a hail shower in north cork. Roads could be tricky in the morning if it freezes.

Showers over Co. Down atm might have Dublin's name on them, in a couple of hours, now that wind has gone more towards the north. Still a slight easterly component to the wind, so showers moving SSW.

Was thinking the very same thing Docarch, keep pressing the button on ME radar to look back over the past 4 15min slots to try see if it lines up with south dublin!
Sad i know but when your snow starved you will try anything.

Bright winter sun all day here near Tralee( apart from a few drops aboput 14.00 ) Got up to 7.9C and even felt warm inside the glass in the house. Cool in the ENE'ly breeze which has lightened off now.

4.6C atm, frosty night in store for much of the country.

    quick question

what is the difference betweem snow and hail? ie why does one occur and not the other and vice versa?

Hail is often associated with thunderstorm clouds. Upward convection winds of up to 130km/h drags cloud above the freezing level and freezes the water droplets, which then later fall as hail.
