raid setup

    So couple days back my external wd hard drive died for good bringing down 1tb of files that ive have saved up over the 10y time.

    So in near future plan to get couple drives 1-2tb at max,to make raid setup for future proofing,but have couple questions.

    what would be best hdds to get performance and price vise ?

    also id be adding them to existing system as storage-would i need to do complete clean install to set it up or would i be able to add it on the side?

    my MB is msi gaming 7 z97 so plenty of sata ports and raid variations,only thing never done it before.thx for any replies.
