Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi guys,

My cocker pup has an issue in one eye which I think may be a congenital cataract - clouding & the iris doesnt react to light properly. My vet has noted the clouding & iris issue though couldnt pin point the exact problem.

Can anyone let me know what sort of cost I'm looking at if I move to a referral? The vet suggested it wasn't causing enough issues to be worth the money of seeing a specialist but after taking some time to think about it, given that he's so young I'd rather have it checked to be sure.

Depends on which specialist you visit. Costs to a registered specialist tend to be twice a normal consultation so 80-100 euro ballpark for a consult alone.

What part of the country are you in ?

Natascha Mitchell is in the West- Galway limerick area travels between hospitals. http://www.eyevet.ie/
I think Leanne Evertson in Barna has also done some extra training in eyes but isn't a specialist yet(may be incorrect though)
Michael woods is registered as an eye specialist and in Dublin
Terry Grimes was the UCD collage opthomologist last I checked.
Gilabbey in cork have a specialist I believe but dont know the name of the Vet..

I would definitely go for referral when it comes to eye cases.

You star, I'm in Dublin so I think I might go for the UCD clinic, a referral letter from the vet wont be an issue... I thought the same about a referral myself.

I know its all case by case but would I be doing massive harm to wait two months, I'm just starting a new job and moneys tight.

    Thanks again for your info!

Personally I would not wait in case it is not a cataract and waiting leaves longterm changes that cannot be fixed. But I am overcautious about eyes.

Same here, I'd go to M. Woods, he's been around donkeys.

Cheaper than UCD too, I'd a couple of bad experiences with consultants there so am biased in that regard.

Thanks guys, I'll find a way so.

Cheaper as in the 80-100 range for a consultation ? My vet said it would be 200 for the initial consultation, which scared the bejesus out of me

Hi my dog had successful cataract surgery with Mike Woods in Dun Laoghaire. I would recommend him without a doubt. 18 months ago our initial consultation was €100

Another vote here for Michael Woods, brilliant eye specialist and a really nice man, explains everything and doesn't rush you.
